Speeding

Quite a bit of reported excess speeding here.
One guy last week booked for exceeding 100 mph on single carriageway A47. I wonder if the fun will be worth the points and fine paid

Yesterday, down here in the Lot, the gendarmes clocked a 21-yr-old on an unregistered Yamaha R6, on a departemental road, with an 80kph limit, at 201kph. Despite him being a big fan of Valentino, they weren't impressed. His licence was suspended immediately, his bike was seized and he's fixed up for an appointment with a judge in July. The gendarmerie put it up on FB and got a lot of response, overwhelmingly critical of the young lad.
The gendarmes do have a sense of humour - their response to the comment (translated) 'In short... jeans + sneakers at 200 km / h... Not to mention the leather that doesn't look very thick to me... Back protection, not sure he's wearing it... the police have maybe saved his life...'

was: 'for his new activity, walking on foot, the thickness of the jacket seems enough....'

Kent speedwatch updates

Research of the use of Go-Pro cameras.

So we all know that we struggle sometimes with data accuracy with the vehicles that pass. I have been looking for some time at the idea of using Go-Pro camera’s to assist with this, however once we have that footage and then we need to upload that footage to Kent police, this is when the issues occur and we fall under the Surveillance commissioner’s office and the restrictions placed upon us, so this would be a no. However I do know that some groups have been using devices to record the sessions, this in itself is outside of my control, however please be aware that this could be a breach of Data Protection if you were challenged, as Kent police have not directed you to do so.

I don't know the context of this post but many Police forces accept camera footage of dangerous driving etc. as evidence. You'd need to send the 2 mins before and 2 mins after the event as well and cannot edit the footage in anyway.

I've driven fast in my life. Car and bike. I've also driven LGV, PCV and tracked vehicles.

But these days at the age of 55, I am cured of speed. I got a PHEV 4x4 hybrid and it is the most fun car I've ever driven. It will probably do more than a hundred and ten, but I'm not interested. What i do these days is to try and do a whole journey on the electric tank. The book reckons you can get between 15 and 20 miles on the battery. Rubbish, I can get thirty! You just switch your focus from speed to battery conservation.

The other speed thing is to drive a moho. Who wants to do 70 on holiday? I stick at about 55, bit less if I am towing.

But I agree with some of what the OP was saying. People are driving or riding like absolute mad sods at the moment. Seems completely stupid to me. You assiduously avoid Covid by locking down, then the very instant you get your 'freedom', you wrap yourself round a motorway bridge support.

There are times when 10MPH is unsafe. There are also times when 100 or more even, is no issue (as was the case on German Autobaans at one time!), and the MI when it first opened too!. Self discipline is the answer, and 90% of the UK population have none!.

Quite right. What is the safe speed for a situation where the car behind you is half a car-length away? As a responsible driver that's the speed you should drive at.
Safe distance is the two second rule ( always 2 seconds between you and the car in front gives thinking time and reaction for braking) only a fool breaks the two second rule :)

Best thing to do is go and undertake a course from the IAM then Why not undertake a high performance Driving course.

Most people will not bother though.

I tend to agree.

When asked by non-bikers, and those thinking of taking it up, what it’s like to ride a bike, my answer always includes:

”the performance is awesome, there is nothing else like it BUT if you cannot exercise restraint >95% of the time then don’t bother. You will either end up losing your licence or killing yourself.”

Exactly why I have never ridden a motorcycle 🏍 I would kill myself no doubt about it.
👍 I do not know anyone who has had a motorcycle and not had an accident.

I know very few who have cars and have not had an accident.

Indeed but with seatbelts airbags and surrounded by a safety cage what is a minor bump in a car can be life threatening or even life changing for soft tissue and bone injuries as happened to a close relative a minor relatively slow speed accident.

So if the following car is 2 metres behind you, 2 metres in 2 seconds is 1 metre per second, which is 3.6km per hour, or 2.25 miles per hour. That's officially the safe speed. Any faster and it's unsafe, officer

70 mph 2 seconds is a safe distance

I don't disagree. I'd like to see airbag gear more widely affordable/available for bikers.

Now you do! Me! Never came off, never dropped it.
Should qualify that a bit. I was commuting into Westminster on a big Suzuki for five years, so had a few near misses because cars don't think bike, buses (hate the bastards) just pull out and cyclists don't care what is coming from behind.

Had four car RTCs in my time. Two my fault, two the other guy.

I had a motorbike many years ago, just for work mostly. Was doing fine until going around aroundabout & a driver decided not to stop as he was joining!! Bang, one broken tib & fib later, a week in hospital & 6 mths offwork. Court case & he said it was my fault i was speeding!!!! Anyway nomore motorcycles for me after that, just no protection. So much better in a moho where you can so much more.

We’ve not meet, have we?

Through a combination of maturity, good sense, training, continual analysis and
restraint I’ve managed to improve the odds somewhat. In combination these, together with an element of luck, have all helped me minimise the risk of becoming part of the statistics. While you can never eliminate the risk altogether there may be an element of “the harder I worked, the luckier I got 😉.

Ian

I should add that the only times that I have, involuntarily, parted company with my bike has been on track or at the Thetford Bash moped racing! 🤣

One here! and after 40+ years. Nor in a car and that's 36 years. Driven all over Europe and beyond, used to drive stretch limos in my spare time.
Built up area's big No No. On the open road, with restraint. Todays cars/bikes are much more capable than those in control of them.
Not speed that causes the accident, it's lack of concentration, or the lack of ability to control the vehicle properly.
Treat everyone on the road as a total t**t and you wont go far wrong, they usually are.
To many older folk forgetting how they used to drive back in the day. To many motor home drivers dawdling along without a care in the world forgetting that most of those stuck behind them have something they need to do or need to be somewhere.
I think as you get older the perception of speed changes for most people, some forget that they used to speed when they were late for that meeting or had over laid in the morning.
Easy to criticise when you have nothing to do and all day to do it.
I have had motorbikes capable of 175 mph. restraint is needed and respect is needed too they could do 0 to 100 in seconds But could stop on a sixpence. (one for the oldies there ;))
Everything in moderation.

I’ve been binned off my bike twice, both by women drivers!! 1, I was in 1st gear just setting off from some traffic light, she cane straight across the carriage way and into me, two policeman witnessed the collision. 2, I was STATIONARY near the Großglockner road In Austria and she chucked the BMW X5 into reverse and came back around 15ft and clattered into the front of a Harley Davidson Electraglide, with all my lights on, knocking me, the Mrs and the bike to the floor, she didn’t see me Make of that what you will??
:pop:

No we have not met or at least I do nit think we have, go easy on the moped ;)

statistically and probability says to me don't get on a bike...ever I know my luck would run out 👍

Here is one video of a fast car and fast bikes,
a) are they irresponsible
b) are they driving safely
c) should they be fined

I'm not going to make a judgement as we have all broken the speed limit ;)

Looks to me to be on a closed off circuit Isle of Man or similar. Set up for racing and all one way roads.
What's the problem?

I had motorcycles & some pretty big ones to boot & never had an accident.

My ex wife's husband was killed recently in a motorcycle accident (not his fault) & he was one of the most careful riders I've ever known but, on a motorbike your highly likely to be injured or die when it does all go wrong, too much modern traffic piloted by folk who think they're the only ones on the road.
I know very few who have cars and have not had an accident.
I've been driving cars now for 43yrs without an accident, an awful lot of that was driving front line ambulances & very often at high speed.
It's all about reading the road & knowing when speed is inappropriate.

I was brought up farming & was used to driving tractors & machinery from the age of about 7 & kept my nose clean there too.

However, I had the luxury of a huge disused WW2 airport on our farm, we bought old bangers & drove them like madmen until they died, then went to the scrappy & bought another, this gets madness out of your system.
Track days are the modern equivalent.

So to sum up, I think I've been very lucky as well as careful.

Exactly.

I’m that there must be hundreds of other videos on YouTube that would have better supported the point trying to be made.

The local plod don’t appear too bothered about what is happening.......

Maybe they didn’t bother as they knew they wouldn’t be able to keep up.....unless they were just waiting for them to come back round on lap 2. 😂

It is indeed the IOM mountain section by the way......

I did not say there was a problem just fast bikes and cars some will take a differing view
