We are starting to plan (as much as we ever plan) our trip to Spain and Portugal for a month from mid September. We know Spain well but Portugal is new to us apart from a city break in the Lisbon area when we also visited Sintra and Cascais. We have the Santander ferry booked from Plymouth and the idea is to go through Northern Spain in a couple of days after stocking up, maybe overnighting in Palencia. Then wander into Portugal working our way down and back up again.
Typically we just wander with no great plan beyond a general direction and a list of places it might be nice to see. We tend to alternate between towns, rural areas such as mountains and the coast. We like food, coffee and er alcohol, history, birds, cycling, walking and swimming... oh and lying in the sun. The places we are thinking of visiting include Porto, Coimbra, inland Serras, Elvas, Evora, Aviera and Tomar. Plus of course the south and west coast maybe Zambujeira, Nazares and the Salema area. I doubt we will see all this but we can always come back if we like it. That's the sum total of the plan.
We try to avoid booking ahead and tend to use aires and camper stops unless we are looking for a few days R&R then we will go to an ACSI campsite with a pool. Non-ACSI is fine, as long as it isn't silly money because it causes palpitations of the wallet. Typically we just stop for a day or two, more than four would be unusual and once we have got to a country we like to limit mileage to no more than a couple of hours. Nothing is set in stone though, we often find we end up doing something completely different. After all that's the beauty of motorhoming. The biggest risk is we love Spain and will have to resist ducking out too often, on the other hand that's the advantage too. Is it easy to pop between the two countries?
We have a Fulli tag that we have used successfully in France and will use it in Portugal if we go on toll roads. I understand there are a number of types of toll road but have been told Fulli works on them all. Don't know if anyone can confirm this, we are a bit sceptical?
So the point of this post is to start a debate on good places to visit in Portugal. Nice beaches, pretty towns and lovely rural retreats. Good aires, campsites etc. Interesting YouTube tours of Portugal. Dos and Don'ts, that sort of thing. It would be great to hear people's thoughts. I expect we will do another blog if people are interested. Previous ones below:
