We are starting to plan (as much as we ever plan) our trip to Spain and Portugal for a month from mid September. We know Spain well but Portugal is new to us apart from a city break in the Lisbon area when we also visited Sintra and Cascais. We have the Santander ferry booked from Plymouth and the idea is to go through Northern Spain in a couple of days after stocking up, maybe overnighting in Palencia. Then wander into Portugal working our way down and back up again.

Typically we just wander with no great plan beyond a general direction and a list of places it might be nice to see. We tend to alternate between towns, rural areas such as mountains and the coast. We like food, coffee and er alcohol, history, birds, cycling, walking and swimming... oh and lying in the sun. The places we are thinking of visiting include Porto, Coimbra, inland Serras, Elvas, Evora, Aviera and Tomar. Plus of course the south and west coast maybe Zambujeira, Nazares and the Salema area. I doubt we will see all this but we can always come back if we like it. That's the sum total of the plan.

We try to avoid booking ahead and tend to use aires and camper stops unless we are looking for a few days R&R then we will go to an ACSI campsite with a pool. Non-ACSI is fine, as long as it isn't silly money because it causes palpitations of the wallet. Typically we just stop for a day or two, more than four would be unusual and once we have got to a country we like to limit mileage to no more than a couple of hours. Nothing is set in stone though, we often find we end up doing something completely different. After all that's the beauty of motorhoming. The biggest risk is we love Spain and will have to resist ducking out too often, on the other hand that's the advantage too. Is it easy to pop between the two countries?

We have a Fulli tag that we have used successfully in France and will use it in Portugal if we go on toll roads. I understand there are a number of types of toll road but have been told Fulli works on them all. Don't know if anyone can confirm this, we are a bit sceptical?

So the point of this post is to start a debate on good places to visit in Portugal. Nice beaches, pretty towns and lovely rural retreats. Good aires, campsites etc. Interesting YouTube tours of Portugal. Dos and Don'ts, that sort of thing. It would be great to hear people's thoughts. I expect we will do another blog if people are interested. Previous ones below:

We did a similar trip. A great place for a couple of days on an ACSI site is Vila Nova de Milfontes. About 200km S. of Lisbon. A couple of decent sites. Great restaurants, coffee and ice cream. Beautiful beaches in the area. Perfect if you have bikes. Very attractive little town with a lot of local tourists.
Also in the far South is Vila do Bispo. Good access to beautiful beaches. Good restaurants, supermarket etc. Aire beside Supermarket. Again great cycling. Spectacular surfing. Very wild and beautiful.
Otherwise you seem to have the itinerary covered.
Fulli works well.

Good plan...go with it...if it doesn't suit, modify on the go..
Flexibility is what you have...a fairly quiet time chosen, summer season is over and the main winter season is yet to kick off...Enjoy..

Thanks, we take bikes so that sounds worth investigating further.

That’s good to hear, we were hoping it would be quieter but still warm, hot would be even better.

How does 42°c suit? That's what some regions of Iberia are experiencing just now..
Actually one of the main advantages of travelling in September and October is it can be pleasantly warm during the daytime, but cools at night...better for sleeping...
The part of Galicia we are just now is 22°c...
A weather spike in Coimbra, one of your chosen locations in mid August will be ,37°c to 41°c in a motorhome that's difficult...
September shouldnt see those temperatures...🤔🇪🇦😃

For us anything is better than cold. We have stayed in the motorhome in Andalucia with temperatures in the 40s?a few times. Caceres and Merida were memorably hot.

Agree though cooler is preferable, late 20s to early 30s would be ideal if you can organise that?

Have a look at Portugal Easy Camp. Their version of France Passion. We used a few. Usually in wine regions for some reason. Some beauties in the Douro.

We enjoyed Viana Do Castello when we toured Portugal a few years ago. We stayed on the motorhome parking area at Darque on the opposite bank of the river and went across on the foot ferry to visit the town. Highlight of Viana for us was a trip up on the funicular to the Sanctuary de Santa Luzia then a climb up within the sanctuary to the top of the domed roof for the most spectacular views over the town and along the coast and river.

They both sound good. I have noted them down thanks. We favourite sites and aires that interest us on S4S so that when we look at an area we can see if there is anywhere to stop that has been recommended. Although for Scandinavia we have found P4N is better.

Fulli tag worked perfectly for us on Portuguese toll roads earlier this year, many of which had no booths/stations and instead had gantry detection systems. Invoicing was later than the French and Spanish usage, so don’t worry if nothing shows on your account for a couple of months.
