Should we travel abroad in the motorhome.

They are changing the rules at short notice to divert attention from their utter incompetence. UK still has the highest deaths. e.g.

UK 771 new cases 74 new deaths

Luxembourg 98 new cases 2 new deaths

Answer - remove Luxembourg from the non-essential travel list.

You can argue population and demographics differences but the simple fact is whatever stat you care to look at the UK is the worst in Europe since this thing started.

You are correct about Brazil, though, but add USA to that list.

I would actually query differences in whats counted as a covid death.

As previously posted we had 3 weeks in France with no issues. I think Now is the time to get out there and do things; yes you do need to consider the impact of an isolation period but the weather lends itself to being outside at the moment. We went to the pub last night and everyone was outside on the terraces, distances weren't a problem and there was a oneway system to the bar.

All too soon we will be back in the autumn where its not going to be good to eat drink etc outside followed by a long winter made even longer for those who have incarcerated themselves when they might be free er. Presumably that is why the government have said the the vulnerable no longer need to shelter. I would make the most of it because it is highly likely to reappear.

How is social distancing managed between the vehicle deck and the cabins? Are they taking more time to transfer us to and from the vehicles so the staircases are less crowded?

I just arrived back from Biarritz.....stunning !!

In a word .....yes!

We returned from St Malo on Thursday and there was no crowding, tables taped off in the restaurant to maintain distancing etc.

Have a look on Brittany Ferries website for their response to CV19

They ask you to be at the dock earlier, they issue you with a colour, and you are loaded slower and then released from your vehicles to go to the cabins in colour groups. Same when you depart. So it all takes longer.

I was on Caen to Portsmouth Brittany Ferries. Vehicle decks are managed via a coloured sticker system. Seems to work even swifter than the usual free for all. Masks are mandatory in all public areas on the ship. Food and drink readily available. I found the ferry very quiet for the time of year.

Thanks for your replies...very encouraging.

Ferry was very quiet. Vehicle decks nowhere near full....which is good !

Just comparing total excess deaths per 100k population year on year and month to month the UK is still the worst in Europe. Either the UK is not reporting covid deaths as such or the massive increase in deaths from other causes need explaining.

We like the train too but usually want to go west so lots of miles on the clock, not to mention the extra miles at home too.
I noticed the Covid 19 infection rate seems less in the south west of France. But it’s still quietly increasing generally.

So you havent heard the bus one then. The UK is recording deaths of people who have tested positive for Covid, so if you tested positive for covid x months ago and you are killed by being run over by a bus you are included.

We're due to leave end of august. Have all 3 campsites booked for a change as we needed emplacement right next to the lakes, sea etc for paddleboarding. We both work, but this will be the 3rd hol cancelled and so we're risking the quarantine possibility. Really looking forward to it. We've done tons of the tourist attraction stuff so we don't usually run into crowds anyway. Life is very short, enjoy a hol.

We gave been travelling in the UK since the 4th July using sites and cl/cs.
The ferry is booked Dover to Calais 21st August.
Should we go or should we stay.
Not even sure we could get bookings in the UK now.
The other choice is france turn left or turn right i.e 🇩🇪 or 🇪🇸 or stick to 🇫🇷. We really are unsure. Don't need to be back into the UK till the end of October.
If your retired which it looks like you are given you don't need to be back till October then there is no problem. However if you are of retirement age then make darn sure you dont contract this virus but in a motor home you couldn't be in a more safe place. Disinfect any packaging coming into your van and follow the hygiene rules as i know of an old couple who Both sadly lost their lives who where shielding. They had infected packaging brought to them. This virus is highly infectious and shouldnt be taken lightly.

Excess deaths is the measure of all deaths whatever cause. As the previous poster said unless you think there a lot more busses running over people this year it shows the likely effect of covid both directly and due to its effect on people dying more of other things due to resources being directed at covid. Now if you're a covid doubter you might say its due to more of those related deaths until you realise that other countries where they had stricter lockdown have less excess deaths.
Exces deaths should be fairly reliable unless you look at countries that might forget to count a few (maybe Russia etc) I don't think anyone would expect under counting of deaths in western civilised countries.

personally we feel we do not HAVE TO go abroad to enjoy a holiday break
the UK has a great attraction the Welsh coastline is spectacular,
we did the Scottish North coast 500 (took 3 weeks to potter along)
followed the whole coastline right around Ireland (4weeks)
and when we feel it is safe to do so will repeat the trips but next time travelling
in the opposite direction,
all the countries speak the same language all are covered by UK national health
We have enjoyed holidays abroad (Norway) but at this moment,
with the fluid constantly changing Covid 19 situation,
feel more comfortable not taking unnecessary risks,
Enjoy in the UK, and stay under the NHS safety umbrella

We were on the tunnel bound for Calais early Wednesday morning, is was as busy as usual. 👍

We are off on Wednesday. France Spain and Portugal. Back Christmas maybe. We will be responsible for our own safety and respectful of other peoples. Very much looking forward to it

Heading out to France last week in August then into Germany and on to Austria before getting into Slovenia and finally enjoying the sun and sea of Croatia a round trip of two months and I think it’s just as easy to social distance in your own motorhome as it is in your own home here in the UK but with the added bonus of being able to swim in the crystal clear sea of the Adriatic lets make the effort and not let Covid-19 wipe out 2020

We have a crossing booked for the end of August, planning to head for the Strasbourg area. Just over a week as we are both still working (from home so no problem with quarantine). We plan to keep an eye on the numbers and if it looks ok we will go but accept the risk that we may have to come back at short notice. If the numbers in France look to be getting worse then we will probably bail and look for somewhere in a quiet part of the UK. London maybe? We booked the crossing just over a week ago - if we had known that the goalposts would be moved at such very short notice then we wouldn't have booked but c'est la vie. Not sure what will happen in terms of getting a refund/vouchers from P&O - I expect that will depend on the FCO advice for France at the time.
Any bookings we have had with P&O have always said "No refunds" on the ticket, they will allow a rebooking but at £20 a time which last year due to some medical problems we changed out booking three times ending up crossing at 2.00am

I think that is illegal under legislation.

Didnt know it was a competition,,,,I think most countries Governments are trying their best with the information they have available at the time for their own country.I understand there are people out there that are far more knowledgeable than the medical experts that are being consulted but unfortunately they dont have a voice :giggle: ;)..I note countries that were being acknowledged as doing better than many others managing this pandemic are now suffering spikes..This Covid19 is an unknown quantity and is going to take some beating so instead of criticising i think a bit of gratitude is in order..Combating this Covid19 is not going to be a quick easy problem to overcome.BUSBY.

Of course it's got nothing to do with the idiots packing out the beaches, or going on demonstrations, or crowding into pubs, or having 'raves'.. much easier to blame the government.

In making your decision it may help to know what flexibility there is when booking ferries and taking out Travel Insurance. I've copied the DFDS policy (below).
If you should get ill (not necessarily Covid 19) while abroad you may not want to be a burden on health services at this time.
Staysure are allowing us to change the start date of our Travel Insurance for up to 18 months from the date of purchase.
Personally, I'm being very cautious at the moment - but at 74, at some time in the next (say) 12 months , I will have to reconsider the balance between absolute safety (which I presently have by self-isolating) and catching it. When doing so I will have to include the effect of any decision on others.

For the route between Dieppe and Newhaven we offer two alternatives until 31st of August 2020:

Yes, the daily increase went up quite rapidly to nearly 1400, but has since been falling slowly -

Wednesday 1392
Thursday 1377
Friday 1346

Let's hope the trend continues!
How refreshing that a country is prepared to publish its Covid infection rates on a daily basis, unlike our own....

So pleased to hear so many are topping up the coffers of our European neighbours. Lets hope there is a thriving British economy to come home to.
I personally feel this country has paid a heavy price for the CCP virus and deserves my monies for the next couple of years so will be touring GB.
There, that's better, and breath.
Your choice, personally will be out if here in 8 days time and will not be back for as long as I can. Perhaps one should reflect that the heavy price you reference was in the shape of over 60k lives, many of whom would still be alive had decisions been made at the appropriate time, and the government handled the pandemic with a modicum of effectiveness. I will spend my hard earned money where I choose.

Its an example of how flawed our data collection is. To speculate on the excess deaths:- some will almost certainly be where diagnosis or treatment have been disrupted or refused
