Shell island

WIFI .
There is shell island wifi at £1.50 24hrs but it is slow and my 3G network connection is slow too.
I've turned my antenna away from site to the distant hillside habitation and connected to a FON spot that must be near 1 mile as the crow flies but a much faster connection that I'm posting this on.

The tiny white dots in the far distance to the left of the trees where the camper is

Andy, in your photos (which set the scene) are they your windbreaks on the first photo? If they are, what type/make are they?

Regards,

Trikeman.
They don't have a brand name we bought them off the windbreak seller that attends shows

Edit
See where my antenna is pointing (y)

Today being Sunday and us being parked on the highest point overlooking the exit gate we witnessed
at least 50 weekenders depart after mid day when the tide was low enough to be let out. A few mid weekers have come in but really the place is wonderfully deserted with no kids either.

Andy, you mention tide???
Wife has seen this thread and now wants me to book up - do you have to wait for the tide to go out to access the site???? Could be why it's called an island, but does this mean a drive through,,,,,,, sea water????(n)

Regards,

Trikeman.;)

Access is across a causeway that gets flooded. A tide timetable is on the website and there are not many times that the road is closed but this weekend was affected.

Broken Link Removed

Cheers Andy.

Trikeman.

We will be back !! Had a lovely relaxing week gifted by great weather.
Lots of campers have turned up this aft as expected and despite the horrible change in the weather they're all full of enthusiasm.
Next month we do destination Durness

Gallery in chronological order. I need to delete some but don't have time to choose.

For anyone going a point of note is that the last 30 miles of the journey to this site takes about an hour and requires some due care

Looks like many a beach I've stayed on off the west coast of Scotland ,however we didn't pay and most of the time there were no other campers .
It looks beautifully and has to be the the most realistic way of getting the wild camping experience from a site in the uk .
Perhaps a taster that has to lead to an adventure further north .

Wow..............thanks for sharing those pictures, Andy.

So looking forward to visiting, now. :)

When you sound that cautionary note about care needed, is this due to narrow approach roads in surrounding area or what ?

Yes they are narrow and lots of parked cars in villages but just stay calm and slow or stop and wait where judgment dictates
HGV's manage but there are places where two in the opposite direction will be a nightmare
There is one long stretch that thankfully has manned traffic lights to prevent two way traffic at once

Hi @Techno100
When you were on Shell Island did you move pitches or just stay in one place?

We moved on Friday for one night as the Sun had been replaced by the usual grey stuff.
Spent 6 nights on the same spot purely because it was probably the best and if I'd seen someone else parked there I'd have been jealous.

Thanks - so you used the bike a fair bit then?

Yes but not as a consequence of where we parked if that's what you mean.

We're heading there this bank holiday Saturday to Monday, then again on the 13th for a less congested couple of days.. it'll be the first outing for us in the new (to us) motorhome and give us chance to get to know it a bit better.

Been coming here for a few years in the car for a day out and was always jealous of motorhomes parked up, being the main reason we got one, and i know this place can be really chilled out as i'm in need of a break

Don't want to hijack the thread but does anyone know how crowded it's likely to be there during half term week (bank holiday week at the end of May)?

We've got rid of the brat for the week so looking for somewhere to go and this has been on the list for a while. Will leave it for a while though if it's going to be full of loads of other brats.

Also what is the walk like into Llanbedr and are the pubs there worth walking to?

We personally would not go when the children are of school basically because we have been told it gets very busy

I see no ships, but I do see some pirates.
