Save money and winter somewhere warmer. Won't work for us!

Simple answer is eviction! They need to understand the real world and you are not doing them any favours being so lenient,
customers of mine waited for their two adult children to go on summer holiday and promptly put their house up for sale.

When the children/adults came back they were totally upset to be told that they needed to find somewhere else to live, but in the long run hard love will make them stand on their own 2 feet in my opinion.
This happened to someone I worked with. Her and her brother, early 30‘s came home one day to see a for sale sign on their house. Asked Mum where are we going….the reply was well you can please yourselves but I’ve bought a one bed retirement bungalow ….good for her 🤣🤣

Charge them 50% of their wages as rent. Then charge them 1/3 rd of the electric and gas.

A friend of mine does this but without telling them puts it all in a savings account and will give it to them when they are ready to buy their 1st house.
I charged them rent, and saved it for them. It paid the deposit on their first rened property with left overs fir furniture it also taught them to live within their means. They hated me at rhe time lol
But both good with money now, and homeowners.

I done exactly.this and never told them. Charged them 50 each week includes house money and a new mobile phone & contract every 2 years from since they started working.
Last year number 1 son was looking for a house with his girl and I dropped the 25k for the deposit I'd saved him for the past 10 years or so that he had been paying me "rent"..it went down very well as you can imagine.
Only issue now is that the cat is out the bag for number 2 and number 3 son..

Gets them a good start on the ladder I spose
Never charged our 2 boys any keep while they lived with us on the condition that they saved as much as possible and didn't waste their money.
#1 has his own flat/apartment and is currently starting the process of becoming a landlord in his own right.
#2 has his own 3 bed house that we are redecorating.

With fuel bills heading where they are, for some it might work out cheaper to put their heating on a frost setting, get in the van and head off and find a bit of sun.
Though as me and Siân were discussing yesterday, this wouldn't work for us, as those kids we leave at home, without us here chasing them, would never bother to turn lights or heating off! The tumble dryer would be used on sunny windy days, and the diswasher would do a full cycle for one cereal bowl and spoon.
Get prepaid card meter installed.
They use it, they have to pay to top it up, soon get the hang of switching off appliances.

Plus, if they are like my kids, they have what are called ‘gatherings’, these are not parties apparently but still sufficiently large to include the odd irresponsible youth who drinks too much and deposits stomach contents all over your sofa! Yes, it would be nice to be able to safely shut up the house, put the house in storage like the van.

Has nobody heard of tough love?

Our twin boys both got jobs at Tesco as soon as they got there NI number.
They paid board from that point onwards 10%

We paid for the first 10 driving lessons they paid the rest till they passed. Let’s say they didn’t mess about. Both passed quickly.

They bought there own cars and insurance. Sam went through university and paid everything himself. Adam did an apprenticeship

They learnt the value of money very early the same way we did.
When they wanted extra they were given the money if they hadn’t got it. They paid it back (no interest charge :giggle: )
They both moved out to there own property at 22 fantastic kids hard working and reaping the rewards of that
It’s also meant we could retire early and travel. Win for both sides
Although only 30 they have already said spend everything they don’t need it. Needless to say what they didn’t get by living off bank of mum and dad will be there for them.

I did mention my mother's insurance earlier in this thread, so he's not alone.
Sorry I did see on a reread. Interesting point though.
I wonder as the new thermostats are able to be turned on from anywhere with internet. If you’re away why would you set and leave at 15degrees I certainly won’t but when away even now for 90 days water and gas are off at mains

Previous partner-30 years ago-had 2 boys, every light in the house left on, the games console and tv in their rooms left on with the game paused-while they spent the weekend with their father…….
Middle of winter and they wanted the house heated like a sauna so they could wear shorts and a T shirt-their mother was just as bad-when I suggested that since it was winter they should put a jumper on they thought I was nuts………

We have a grand child living with us who is nocturnal.
So used all power and lights all night. Goes to bed at 6am up at 4pm.
When we we are away leaves everything switched on doesn’t clear up so after 4 or 5 weeks away I am under pressure to return home to ensure “ damage limitation “ 🙄🙄
we have tried hard to break their habit but so far even threats haven’t produced a change in habits.
🤐
He would at my house,,I don't think.Your house your rules..BUSBY.

You forgot a few, like a full kettle boiled for one cup of tea, a vat of HOT water to wash their car with!! And I thought it was just ours so glad, well reassured to hear it's universal.
Mike.
Yours wash their car !!!!
How on earth did you train them to do that ? 🤣

I was thinking of suggesting reading the meter before you leave and telling them they pay for what they use, until someone else posted that. :winky:
I really like the prepaid card meter idea tho  but the downside is that the charges are higher, and it will be that way when you are there too. :(

Jim I bet you’re secretly really happy that Katie is up, about, and putting one cereal bowl in the dishy…. 😉

Spose i'm lucky. Got one son who lives 4000 miles away and one son who has not lived at home for 10 years...................oh the peace n quiet and relatively low bills.
And we are in sunnier climes for 4 of the worst winter months.

It's the whole lifestyle that's the problem, they gotta have the latest phone, earphones, laptop, Netflix, a constant steam of online deliveries, as though they have to have everything now, and yet really they have nothing - still living in their sad rooms, at mum and dad's! It's a very different world to the one I grew up in, and I'm only early 50's!!!

10 years ago on retirement told daughter we were moving, she could come as well if she liked, off she went brought her own house using her own savings for deposit. We are still in the same house.

No kids.
No house.
No problem.
What about when that little hairy beast of yours bats her eyes at you and shivers ... I bet you soon switch the heating on full! 😄
