Satellite T.V. could soon be obsolete.

We love our sat dish and free sat. Would never pay for sky. Used our dish 60cm all the way down to the French/Spanish border. Having TV from home when you are away for long periods is great, all powered by solar and a LiPo. I must thank the guys at Oyster Northampton who serviced my system and adjusted the LNB to give me further southern coverage. Long live the birds never mind waiting for 5G 6G poor coverage and stuttering costly reception. I await the abuse. Derek

I'll stick with the satellite for a while yet. Roaming charges will make streaming content whilst touring in the EU prohibitively expensive until the issue gets to the top of the things that the UK need to sort out.

It'll be a while yet before I get rid of the dish.

We'll be sticking with our dish too for as long as possible. We get an Astra 2 signal down as far as Teruel. We also supplement it with a Firestick using our current Vodafone contract, due to expire next June.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Can some explain very slowly. If I bought a Superdrug sim could I watch tv abroad including Eurosport. What else would I need for this set up. I have no satilite., but MiFi 4g.

ps if Richard (Bridgwater) sees this I will be in contact with him very soon!

If you can watch it in the UK then you can watch it in Europe ( until Superdrug put a cap on roaming - fingers crossed they wait a while coz I'm taking mine to Spain next month for a few weeks)

You do need to keep an eye on data usage, Its great for watching stuff you actually want to watch but leaving it on in the background will soon zap it. I player have a setting specifically for mobile which dramatically reduces data consumption at no noticeable drop in quality.

I agree that the death of the satellite is imminent but apart from new technology its departure is being accelerated by new vans with low payloads.

I don't think it's just new technology it's cost and ease of fitting.

We have been in spain for two weeks now using a firestick alexa and tethering all mobile devices from a superdrug unlimited sim at the moment the data usage is 36g been a bit of an experiment as we have a 3 mifi and phones data all capped at 12g and haven't used any of this and through france and spain been really impressed with speed and connection was expecting the usual text saying data exhausted but no so will keep pummelling the usage and see where it takes us bear in mind we have a backup so if we fall foul all is not lost. One of the downfalls of this set up is the odd evening emmerdale or corrie has been received but what ever keeps her happy 😊

Same here we’re in Croatia and have been using the Superdrug sim through my Maxview roam for 6wks so far used 60gb and no data warnings all for £20 a month what a bargain

I wonder if terrestrial TV is going the same way as over the last few months all the major channels have added live streaming to there catchup apps. Could be a forerunner to ditching the transmitters.

We are in France at the moment and out of the satellite footprint and have been watching live UK TV via streaming.

We are using a Superdrug Sim in France at the moment only a couple of places up in the mountains where we haven't been able to stream.
Good thing with Superdrug you can turn the monthly payments on & off on thier website.

Only downside being on Three you often have to change carriers to get a decent speed as Three's parteners appear to throttle data quite often.

It’s pretty much obsolete in our motorhome now. The TV has only been turned on three times in the six years we’ve had it. First time to tune it in, second time grandkids watched a dvd and third time to watch a World Cup footy match whilst we were in France. That was few years ago. I should probably get rid of it and use the cupboard for something else, but you never know one day we might just want to watch something whilst away.

Well my phone is on a sky contract. I pay £8.00 per month, get all the normal stuff. Free calls and so on, but my data seems to build up every month, we have been in padstow for 10 days and decided to use the fire stick to watch some films. After 4 days got a text from sky saying my data for that month was down to 1.5 gb. So l logged on to my sky account and could see l had built up 164gb of data in my piggybank, just a quick case of transferring 8gb from piggyback to phone and we were watching more films again.
We also have a satellite fitted but only use it for the news in the morning, other than that it’s the same old, so we tend to use the fire stick. So as far as sky mobile goes l think they are the best all round, you have the calls, texts and data all for 8.00 a month.

Agreed and you can use your data in the EU unlimited by any cap (so far). This is our latest approach, I've got around 100 gb in my piggybank and have two sims one in the mifi and one in my phone. Easy to switch data around and buy extra if necessary. Ditching Smarty as they now have an EU cap. Looks like the Superdrug and Sky sims are the only ones at the moment with unlimited EU data use

3 mobile network in the UK, it appears to say all your data is available in the EU without reference to changes in Jan 22. will did a little more, thanks
I have an unlimited SIM with 3 but you are limited to 12GB per month in Europe. Unless you already have a deal with them I think they are also now charging for roaming (another brexit 'benefit')

The live app for sky news on the firestick is so easy we're even using it at home.

I realised I may be on borrowed time but I have an unlimited Virgin wifi data for £27 odd p.m. We stream about 3 hours TV a night using a Firestick watching content from BBC, ITV HUB, Prime Video and Netflix. Am aware that (I think) 3 has taken over Virgin and is supposedly limiting Roaming to 20gb per month but so far, we‘ve had no warning of data use and so long as we can get about 2 bars of mobile signal (SFR seems the best in France) we have access. So fingers crossed. 🤞

I have an unl sim on Vodafone and until the contract runs out I am not liable for the extra costs per day in the EU, however it is still data limited to fair useage, 25gb or the average monthly data used in the UK whichever is more.

As of end of August I used to work for Sky and yes this is coming in and it’s being trialed now. They are testing TVs with built in decoders specially now Sky install their own FTTP via their own engineers.

Sky now owned by Comcast are ploughing money into beating the competition and plans are in the process of doing that but at what cost to the consumer I have no idea but I have a feeling it’s not going to be cheap.

I refuse to have a TV in my Motorhome,...Kills all conversation, Just walking around the campsite you can see whole families sat watching the tv and NOBODY is talking to eachother!...might just as well have stayed at home !...Last July we stopped at a place just off the A38 in Devon,...HUGE RV next to us with what must have been a 65" TV pointing straight at us through their open window....Our complaints about the high sound level were met with a Finger !.....we laughed at their attempts to pump up a flat tyre the next morning, and of course their questions asking us if we saw anything suspicious, were met with of course, you guessed it....A Finger !

I get the feeling your a little critical of how others live their lives Robert. Live and let live buddy.

We done the same. Van came to us with a sat dish already fitted by previous owners. Even then, the market seemed to be leaning towards sim cards and data led streaming and viewing . So we didnt see the point of carting around 20 + Kg of unused all but obsolete tech . Also removed the roof mounted tv antenna on a periscope pole thing , no need for that either.
We are thinking of doing that. Did you get a plate welded on to cover up holes where it had been?

We're the same it's the place where I really use my kindle..

We just changed our van and it doesn’t even have a TV aerial, only a DAB one-previous owner rarely watched tv. So over to you guys-what are my options if we decide we would like tv, mainly in UK, France, and Spain + possibly Italy?
We had a satellite dish on our old Hymer but it was an early version and I had to tune it manually which was a bit of a pain but doable.

Mifi and firestick seems to be the way to go

Thanks for that (y) as it has answered the question I was going to ask, re the Sky mobile contract.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Sounds to me like Vodafone are getting the sack as soon as I get home and I am going to go with Sky Mobile by the look of it!

We’ll know more on 07/10/2021 but if Sky do announce an internet only Sky Q there’ll be both offerings on sale for awhile. Sky Q overlapped with the previous Sky product.
“SKY Q via Internet” fills the gap for people who don’t like how dishes look and others who are unable to install them need.
It could just be news of a Sky Q Smart TV 🤪 (but the former or both are likely announcements).
Edit. Clarity
A Sky Smart TV+

(Like PhilandMena ’s story but “horse’s mouth” and with subscription pricing 👍🏻)
Edit: if like me you’re interested look Broken Link Removed
I really need some sort of accident to happen to my still great current telly ☹️
