Hi. We are trying to decide on which sat nav to purchase. We have a autotrail hiline Imala 720 and plan to go to Europe this year. We are trying to decide between Tom Tom go expert 7, Tom Tom camper max 7 or a Garmin.

Can we have your advice please. There doesn’t seem to be a lot between them which is making it an even harder decision.,
Many thanks

my second sat-nav is a Tomtom trucker,
I exaggerate the campers dimentions slightly
it's now several years old, and with free updates
has proven to be perfect for our 8.75mtr M/H

We have a Garmin, which is specifically designed for Motorhomes. Can’t remember exactly, but I think we bought it via the Caravan & Motorhome Club. It also shows when you’re near a CL site.

I think it’s worth trying out the free phone apps as they regularly get free updates as the updates for dedicated units can be very expensive. IMHO it’s vital to get a smooth self adhesive disc for your dash so you can fix a suction cup mount there. I like the “Here” app ( aka “Here We Go”) on my iPhone. I rarely look at the display so size doesn’t bother me much. Saved info can be shared between the app on my phone and iPad. Unimportant, but I rather like having Irish Moira Siri tell me where to go. I’ve even got her to say “Left, left” etc like they do on the police chase videos! (I’m not a good listener.)

I bought a Sat Nav (SN) from Falcon, big mistake, their customer service is awful. I wanted to do the “ free update” as advertised all over their adverts. The SN got us completely lost when they were doing the Cambridge bypass so I used falcons ‘ask grandad’ feature . A few emails were exchanged and they wouldn’t do the free update because I can’t find the receipt I was told it would be >£50 and I would have to return the SN. Bear in mind that no pne else supplies the falcon SN. Don’t these people keep records!

Go for a reputable name, then features, vechicle dimensions, campsites, local points of interest, WiFi update facility, free map and speed camera updates, weather etc.
One point to watch out for is shortest route, quickest route and avoid toll roads options they can considerably increase your milage so always carry an up to date map.

I return to my trusty garmin with free lifetime updates, had it for years and still reliable

We have Tomtom Go Professional in which you can enter dimensions. It seems to have a mind of its own unless you carefully ensure that you have entered the correct commands. We are currently using it in Spain and it has taken through the centre of towns when we would not have chose that route. Read the instructions carefully and it is okay.

This is one of the problems when relying on technology, it always disappoints.

We use the standard Zenec sat nav but my co pilot has a paper map who tracks the journey on it, ocassionally overriding the sat nav or suggesting an interesting place to stop. A blend of tech and paper maps when driving we find works really well.

What did people do before sat navs ! ( most did not get lost)
We also use both paper and tech - and don’t get lost - we have unplanned adventures - although on some occasions I may be extending the truth a little 😄🤔

We too have a Garmin with size entered. We do use Waze for better traffic reports but it does try and send you down silly little roads, the Garmin does not always give the best directions, if you ignore the route, the time can go from 2 hours to 1.5 hours. So to summarize we use it when we are not sure of the roads or route.
The biggest pain for getting it to stick to the ducato dash, there is 1) no space and 2) no smooth surface.

The

TomTom Campervan and Caravan Sat Nav GO Camper Max 7" HD screen with Campervan and Caravan POIs gets good reviews!

you can input ALL dimensions so it allows for narrow roads, low bridges etc.
I’ll be looking for one when we start travelling again!😏

I have the older 6” TomTom camper one. It’s ok but not much camper about it. It’s just the truck one with done campsite POI’s thrown in. Doesn’t do scenic routes unless you use the MyDrive site to plan a route then send that to the TomTom (I think the latest one does do scenic routing).

I’ve seen a possible better option - big android tablets that can do CarPlay and android auto so can run heaps of apps. Some have dash cans and reverse cam options. Look at carpuride as an example.

It isn't a bad price but if you see the name and the description it is for a car and not a MH

I don't see any reason to have specific motorhome model.
There are so few low bridges an narrow lanes that can easily be avoided.
Plus non of them have ever been 100% reliable.
You are far safer depending on the MK 1 eyeball
We have had the six inch version for over ten years and have yet to clout a low bridge

I have a Garmin Camper 780 which frequently disappoints so at the same time I run Google maps on an Android phone. In an area that I know well Garmin wants me to avoid roads which are perfectly passable. And when I ignore Garmin and drive down my choice of roads, Garmin constantly tries to get me to go back to its choice of route, even trying to take me down tiny single track lanes. It is not until after 5 miles that it discovers the same route that Google maps is using.

Last summer in Belgium I chose a destination on the Swiss border. Garmin's choice was 5 hours slower than Google's! I followed Google and after many km Garmin caught up.

Google has plenty of glitches too. Like others have said, use them in conjunction with paper maps and look suspiciously at some of their choices.

We have a Garmin 780 with MH dimensions set - been happy with it UK and France
Yeah My Sniper Truck one does all that and is great....especially when I turn off the nagging 'You are over speed limt' nagger.

We stopped the installed Xzent unit which is useless and now use an Avtex Tourer 2. This is a rebadged Garmin but includes all CAMC sites also. Very happy with it.

Having no luck with snooper I went to aguri been great for years just got a new aguri but having issues with it phoned them up as there after service as always been good but sad to say no luck with them about my issues. So now gone to copilot using iPad which is great to use with searchforsites you find your location press the the little squiggly bit on the bottom of page it then asks how you want you want to use I press copilot and just like magic the route is set. Great combination.👍

Garmin Camper 770. I have used all over Europe. Put dimensions of motorhome in and off you go. Wi-Fi updates. Traffic updates. Works out alternate route due to traffic delays.
I would strongly recommend.

I have to agree with you there Neil, weve always said its one of the best things we've ever bought. For the exact reasons you have said. Especially when abroad

At present we are travelling through France to Spain, purchased the Tom tom camper pro 7” just before we left home we wanted to avoid as many tolls as possible, just outside Bordeaux and the tolls have only cost us 5.50 euros so far. It’s been faultless, clear instrunctions even identifys where the vets are for the return journey. Expensive but I think worth every penny.

When my mother had her tom-tom I'd given her direction to a friends house.

When she got home she told me that me and the satnav agreed so she followed my directions.after she checked it was OK with satnav

Also through Paris gave them the route and father rang me thanking me. If satnav had not agreed with me he was not going to follow it

They soon forgot how many times they would ring and ask what I'd you say about so n so and ignore the idiot box.

As they trusted it more if it agreed with the road map father was happy if it didn't......well

The idiot box is what we refer to satnav not the user not meant to cause offence I sure someone will be

I use avtex and Garmin, but I would ensure your new unit has options “Emission Badges”, “Emission standards”, “Environmental Zones”, etc or equivalents:) Presently I use Avtex Tourer 3 in a 7.45t motorhome:)

Using an Avtex Tourer 2 with vehicle dimensions (6m : 2.9m) 95% of the time it’s great - then it’s not!! I can read signs on the road that tell me bridge heights etc - that’s not the problem. When it takes you up a series of streets in Castelo Branco (no warning signs) that knock both wing mirrors and scrape a sliver of paint from the awning - that’s a very lucky close shave!
