Ridge Monkey, what do you cook in yours?

Love the remoska but the slow cooker is better than anything else.
Its all about space for us - Hymie is only 5.4m and the Ridge Monkey fits into the bottom cupboard under the sink, electric oven in a box in the garage (under the bed), anything else means more boxes to keep shuffling out of the way every time I want something.

I've bought pastry and chicken and will be trying the pie next week!

Made me wonder about what would happen if I was making an omelette, would liquid egg dribble out on turning?
Why would you turn an omelette? I like mine cooked on one side folded in half with the centre nice and runny.

some of us hate runny omelette.
Did the steak in one half of mine tonight, very pleased with the results. don't have the sandwich maker type as I'm not keen on toasties.

Agree, Mark doesn't mind, but I want mine to be solid and cooked right through.

I have both a TF gear (bought first) and a Ridge Monkey XL, both are great. But I bought the Ridge Monkey because it is smooth not ridged like the TF, so can can cook fried eggs, an essential part of my breakfast fry up, a bit of a tradition for us when away camping/vanning!

Yes I’m thinking I bought the wrong one. Can you do 2 toastiea at the same time in the RM?

Not really as the pan needs to be closed and it holds together nicely as it has magnets on the handles.
You can just fit in one and a half toasties in the RM ie 3 pieces of bread.
My omelette was made with 3 extra large eggs.Slightly too much filling though !

I bought the TF Gear one with ridges and have cooked virtually every convenience food in it.
Found out that pasties, sausage rolls etc need a very low heat turning regularly for about 15 minutes before the centre was 65+ °C.
Sausages, burgers, steak and chops are easy to cook with great results, just open up and turn the meat with tongues like you would in a frying pan but with it closed while cooking takes half the time.
You can make toast, warm pastries and with spray oil, make great fried bread!
Love it to bitz and only uses small amounts of gas with minimal fat spray.
Ideal with an outside gas cartridge stove (i have 2 so can cook bacon & sausages in one and eggs in the other).
Oh, by the way, easy to clean and little storage space considering stomach satisfaction.

For the men, set up outside and cook kippers, only takes a couple of minutes and no hassle from the missus!
Take them out of the packet first!,,

How do you cook eggs on the ridged surface?, the only eggs I could cook were in an omelette, other forms seem to stick to the ridges, that’s why I bought a ridge monkey with the smooth surface for mainly, eggs to go with the TF which does the other things you describe well.

Easy. Spray a little oil on the cooking surface. Break egg in and leave until the white is just cooked. Flip over and leave for about 15 seconds. There you have it. Fried egg. Easy over.
The TF has a non stick, Teflon surface so the egg shouldnt stick unless you have just had bacon and sausages in first. If you do, just give it a wipe and off you go.

I was doing it the wrong way round, bacon & sausages first then using the fat from them to cook the eggs ?

We bought a Kampa XL from one of Warners shows, used it for all sorts as we don't have an oven in van. Ended up buying one for house too as it saves loads of mess. Going to try doing a home made steak pie in it on top of wood burner next time we do "driveway camp out"....

I confess to getting a little confused.
I think I want a Ridge Monkey but do they all come apart to create 2 pans-if needed-and do they all have detachable handles?
I like the idea of the smooth cooking plates, don’t want ridges on the inside!

This is the bigger one with detachable handles.

Yes, the older cheaper one (about £17) has fixed handles.

And yes, the new one with detachable handles does split into 2 separate pans if required.

Ok so i went for the chicken pie tonight and was pleased with the results. Used 2/3rds of a can chicken soup, 2/3rds of a chicken breast from the Sunday roast, onion, garlic, tarragon, peas and carrot for the filling, puff pastry, cooked on lowest for about 30 mins, came out nice and crisp.

Thanks for the info, will look into where I can order one from.
Was going to Carpfury who is on eBay & Amazon but apparently he only has standard size left!

I love my Ridgemonke. Cook so much in it. Steaks are good, you can leave the rest wrapped in foil in the neoprene case while doing other stuff. Some of my dishes

We made an apple pie last night. Cheated with ready made pastry, a tin of apple slices, a bit of cinnamon and some sugar. We egged the outside, thought it might stick as used no oil, but it cooked lovely in about twenty minutes. Might try flaky pastry next time.

I'm loving the ridge monkey! Sourdough pancakes, fried pheasant egg, treacle cured bacon and myshroom sarnie, melted cheese, onion and sweet chilli wrap. It's certainly a versatile pan for the space it takes up.

A good looking yolk on those pheasant eggs. Are they tasty? I love a good yolk.

Yes tasty but can't say they were any different to a chickens egg.

Attempt 2 for steak tonight. Mushrooms, onion and a bit of garlic.

It really is good for steak. This was a chunky rump steak and cooked it really well.

Shame it doesn't seal well, if they could crack that it would be an impressive piece of kit.
