Residency / Citizenship in another EU country - How easy or hard?

I thought I was accountable not my accountant in the UK too or am I wrong?
Not sure, it might come down to who actually submits the return to the HMRC, there's a question on the submissions somewhere about if you've had advice or not if you do it yourself but how that relates to if there's an error I don't know.

Being an expat is a very complicated affair if you are still earning and want to do things correctly.

Only part of the quote - I earn a little money on the USA but am not a resident, domiciled there and have not even visited for a while but I pay US tax on my US earnings. This income is not taxed in the UK under the double taxation treaty.

As Snowbird says it is complex and you do need specialist advice.

A misconception made by many am afraid. Spanish "accountants" are not accountable to Spanish revenue, you are.

The same in the UK. If you sign the form to say it is correct you are accountable. I don't know of anyone who would sign anyone else's Annual Return except in very special circumstances such as a trusteeship or POA. If an accountant were to sign they would be very careful to ensure liability insurance was in place. When Ken Dodd had his misunderstanding it was he who was prosecuted.

I would assume wherever you live the taxation authorities would hold the taxpayer responsible for any wrong returns it would be up to them to then sue the accountant if they had done it wrong. I was just puzzled by some of the post seeming to say this was the case in Spain and hinting it was different here.

ditto Lester Piggott, and jailed

I made a very polite request. No harm done.

You could marry said lady.Solve the problem:xgrin:
Don't worry about it.
Not until one satisfies the following conditions (from a Polish government website)

"• spouses of Polish citizens, provided that the marriage has existed for at least three years, and

the foreigner had stayed in Poland for two years immediately prior to filing the application"

Which I could not do by 29th March 2019

Ye s,what I said earlier

They probably are but unlike here they are not physically handling the money.

Yes but the accountant wouldn't need it here as he isn't liable even if he fails to pay the money to the Hacienda & runs off with it.

No ,the difference here , & very similar in Germany , is that if you run a business & especially a limited company your accountant is a signatory on the bank account & pays the income tax due monthly & the vat quarterly. If they do not pay it for whatever reason ( i.e they pocket it ) you are liable for the payments plus all the fines & have to get a criminal prosecution launched against the accountants to try & recover your money. We were always told that we had to check each month with the Hacienda to ensure that what they said they had paid had actually been paid in & in our name .
Same applies for anyone i.e. a pensioner , to ensure that what they are being asked to pay is actually the amount being paid especially if the acct is doing the paying.

So, it seems its not just a case of rock up in Spain or for that matter any other EU country your UK registered moho and stay as long as you want and do just what you want. Some of the hoops you have to jump through some would need to visit Slimming world for a considerable length of time before making the move.

It looks like we have all finished with this thread now - many many thanks for all your comments particularly the ex pats living and running Motorhomes and cars in the EU other than the U.K. - all the invaluable information we have gathered and the many myths that have been clarified!

And many thanks both Leave and Remainers from keeping the thread out of the Belly Locker - quite a feat I think lol.

Muchas Grasias !! :)

no camping in gib though. they do get very stroppy if you stop overnight in a camper etc . best go morocco. do 90 days there and have lots fun. could possibly get to canaries from there as well. there was talk about reopening the ferry crossing between morocco and canaries . used to be very handy for extending winter hoildays in morocco.
there was talk that its going to start again but from taraya . it used to be layoune was a few from agadir at one time.
mind there is also talk that a ferry from tarfaya to falmouth could be on the cards soon as well.
there has been loads of modernization and enlarging at tarfaya getting it ready.
some do have an odd night in gib . i have but did get warned by the local police not to do it . a small van ideal . was years ago i did it in my old vw but its not really allowed . even caravans get stopped entry etc . locals garage theirs in la linea etc .
Hi there vwalan, long time no see,any idea when the ferry from Falmouth to Tarfaya is likely or rumoured to start, might be worth considering, along with factoring in costs, would really miss the drive down but the wife is starting to get board just sitting there for 5or6 days travelling. Gwyn taxi

as far as i have heard the ferry to canaries from morocco is going to be first and really i depends how things go. be interesting if it comes about though.
its really more for moving produce though saves paying a tarrif if goods travel through the eu. fingers crossed it will be good for us as travellers.
