Rash of 'cheap' motorhomes on eBay.

Just passing the time browsing on eBay today and can't believe the number of ridiculously cheap motorhomes for sale.
2008 pilote A class for £9k anyone ? ??. Most surely have to be scams?
That one is a scam I received an email from eBay saying the account has been hacked.

These Ringwood people sure do have a lot of vans for sale. I hope they know what they’re doing because there are some rather intolerant types out there who really don’t like being scammed and are in a position to take matters into their own hands.
I think you may have missed the point. It is not the ringwood people doing the scamming. They are being scammed too, see message from them copied by Jim in post #58

Just look at the seller, usually have no feedback, the name has the brackets and number after it, and if you message them you get either an out of office, or message stating another email address to use.

Try ringing the phone number in the advert and you will find out it is most definitely a scamm

Anyone who pays (even a deposit) for a vehicle they haven't seen deserves to be tucked up.

Sorry to be so blunt, but these threads are very very common on Facebook, and are done to death.

All these scams on eBay and Gumtree was exactly the reason that my friend and I have been working on a project and just got it up and running now. It's a classifieds site for the leisure market and we are going to make sure that none of these scam adverts get published on the site. Too many people being scammed and it's not acceptable. I know for most it's easy to spot but for excited newbies it's easy to let the excitement get the better of them and they fall for the scams. The site we have been working on is called LeisureSeller please feel free to check it out and lets stop the scammers.

Hi all. I've joined this forum to hopefully raise the profile of a scam that has involved my son and his company which is still being used by the scammers in an attempt to con the unwary people seeking a motorhome.

Jim (Ringleader) has posted about this already #58 back at the beginning of the month when people were contacting my son following an Ebay ad for a 2008 Pilote Explorateur 703 priced at £9800 and he was at his wits end on how to stop this, as he didn't want people turning up on his doorstep looking for a non existent motorhome that they'd paid for.

Well, the reason for posting on behalf of my son is that for some reason he has not been granted posting/reply privileges whereas I have and he wants the forum to be on the lookout for more ads for the above motorhome on FB Marketplace. He has already had three calls from people who wary of a scam wanted to see the vehicle and in all cases he has advised them it's a sacm and has provided them with a police crime number to allow them to pass on any info that may help them with their enquiries.

We've both looked on FB Marketplace and can't find it and as he forgot to ask the people who rung him today for more details of the FB ad we don't know what area they are advertising it in. One of the callers lives in Newcastle but looking at the FB Marketplace for that area drew a blank.

Catching these scammers is nigh on impossible and all I can hope to do is raise the issue again and hopefully spread the word on this con. Thanks for taking the time to read this and thanks to admin for approving my membership.

p.s. I'd buy a motorhome like a shot but my wife has a long memory and her dislike of caravaning holidays in the 1970s extends to motorhomes as well and I'm all for a quiet life.

Simple solution ... if you find something that doesn't seem to be kosha report it, Ebay will look into it and if it's fraudulent they'll remove it.
They and PayPal also give you the runaround first hoping you'll be put off

Watchdog last night had a bit about a Romanian who had done it lots of times and had hacked eBay and paypay

Wish we all were as clever as you

It’s not about being clever, they stick out like a sore thumb. My guess is greedy people are most likely to get scammed by these thinking they are getting a massive unrealistic discount.

You're all correct in stating that these scam ads stick out like a sore thumb and you'd expect people to steer clear but some people can't resist the chance of a bargain and when they make that first step in contacting the scammer they're already on the hook.

All of the people who took the trouble to search for a phone number for my son through companies house and 192 all asked him is it a scam, as the price is so low. The fact that they're asking the question shows they have some suspicions but why try and make contact when you think it's dodgy and possibly fall into a trap set by a smart talking very clever spammer?

Anyway, back to my previous post, it would be helpful if all you good people could be on the lookout for the latest ad for a 2008 Pilote Explorateur 703 priced at £9800 on Facebook Marketplace and let me know if you find it. My son and I have spent 24 hours looking for it without success and we need to find it before we go to Facebook to report it as a scam. Thanks everyone and have a great but safe day.

You are so wrong my friend and obviously have no regard for human nature

If it’s so common show me one sensible person that has been scammed by one of these unrealistically cheap motorhome adverts and I mean someone that would normally do all the correct research and checks before buying a motorhome.

There was someone on a news channel recently, bought a van, Unseen, due to cv19, seller was having it delivered, if wasn't what he wanted, to be refunded.
Well guess what, paid up directly, no van.
What can you say.? There is one every
minute, no wonder the scammers are so prolific. o_O

So they researched prices and did all the required checks when buying a motorhome (or any other vehicle)?

I haven’t even seen the advert but if they expected to buy the motorhome pictured for 14k I doubt they had and could not possibly be called sensible in this circumstance.

Well its sure you never have. Be truthful how did you become aware of the phrase ' mr X is out of the office at the moment but you can contact him at xyz@yahoo' or what ever, did you get warned by somebody or were you clever and read it as a con ? If the price was just under market again would you think the seller was perhaps desperate or immediately dismiss it as a con? Or perhaps you don't trust anyone. Just what are all the checks and research you think you need?

Research would be what else is on the market and values
HPi check
Mot check
Service history check
And of course viewing and test driving the motorhome

I guarantee that if you did all of these before parting with money you would never be caught out by this type of scam.

Unfortunately having the phone number proves nothing. I’ve seen a MH this week that I was interested in. It’s also been reduced by £5000 since I first enquired.
The guy wants to WhatsApp...! However I can get neither a photo of the VIN plate or a copy of the V5....

he says he works on an oil rig in the North Sea.... 🤔🥴

Any chance of posting a link to the add Tony or PMing to me. Thanks

rogcal,
the original advert has been withdrawn , though I screenshot it!

i’m reluctant to post too much detail as i’ve filed a report at actionfraud.police.uk
for all I know, the scammer be reading this! Suffice to say I have screenshot everything, and have quite a bit of evidence, including his mobile number and email address. Hopefully, he will be getting a knock on the door......🤔

Don’t you believe it. I’ve had a seller send me a link to a genuine looking ebay page..... Except it isn’t. He has over 1200 feedback & 100% positive. No surprise, He’s fabricated the page and the item isn’t on eBay! Neither does the seller exist....The whole thing is a scam...😖

I’ve reported my findings to actionfraud.police.uk

I wonder if Action Fraud actually do any collating of information that would allow their software to pick up similarities in ads and other significant details that would show that several ads purportedly coming from different scammers are all from one person? Should be simple enough to write a programme and ask it to look for similarities in ads and compile reports that point to one individual.

Less than 16K for an 08 plate Pilote.....no maybes about it....
Interestingly, the scam I’ve just uncovered also started on Caravansforsale.co.uk.
that’s at least 3, just in this thread! Sadly, they Don’t seem to have Any way To report it.....

I’ve done a report to actionfraud.police.uk.
