Rash of 'cheap' motorhomes on eBay.

I found one on an American website for a Winnebago. What I was looking at sell for around 60,000 dollars, this one was for sale for 25,000 dollars :Eeek:, but the write up was entertaining.

In his best pidgeon English, he claimed he was a German, and was stuck in Germany because of the lockdown, and his cousin (spelled cussen) lived in Housten, would give the buyer the key to the RV and the key to the garage it was stored in, when he received the money in some far off bank account. ;)

It was so child like it was laughable. The Gruffalo was more believable than this attempt at story telling!

i have bought a few motorhomes on eBay and never had a problem but i am a cash buyer and only part with my money face to face and usually i take one or two of my boys with me and check vin and reg no
bill
i would suggest you ( like me) are not the “target” customer of a scammer, unfortunately there are many thousands of people that believe that someone legitimate would sell something on e bay that was worth 2 or 3 times what they were asking for it
sad but true, a scammer only needs to get lucky 1 in 1000 times

I find ebay really slow or non existent at responding to reported scams.

Last one I reported the seller managed to sell over 600 items at nearly £30 a time before it ended. That was a hacked account with over 800 feedback.

Annoying when you can see the scam taking place and can't do anything to stop it.

Yes, but he was talking to an American audience! ;)

And here's where the photo's came from and still looks a little low on price, so maybe a scam too.

I recently enquired about a Hymer that was advertised on Caravans for Sale and Caravan and Motorhome classified, this is the reply I got.

Hello, yes, the motorhome is still available for sale. we have all the paperwork in order, full service history, V5C, MOT, no damages, clean title, no finance on it! This motorhome is ready to go, selling for this price because this is a repossessed motorhome purchased at an auction. Please make contact with Krystyna R at: motorhomes@ringwoods.co.uk, for more photos, info or re inspection; we can't see your email through caravansforsale website. IMPORTANT: In order for us to give you the correct details, please mention the motorhome name and price in your email subject! Regards, Krystyna R, M R VEHICLES SALE LTD Company number 12312402

How about asking to see a selection of the seller’s holiday photos with the van, family in shot of course ?

We had the cloning bit happen to us when we were selling our Dethleffs. It appeared for sale with a totally cloned advert at 5k less than we were asking. Ebay stopped the advert for us. We sold it with an ad on Motorhome Fun.(y):giggle:

I have made an enquiry on the Pilote.
Awaiting reply.
Please don't worry I'm not parting with any money and won't be conned.
Just interested.

BU08GCO has a valid MOT certificate up to 29/10/20 according to the GOVT MOT website.......

Item reported as potentially fraudulent.

Unfortunately Ebay is the biggest fencing operation and source of Scams, Stolen and Pirated goods on the planet and these practices have proven very profitable for the company so there really is no incentive to act responsibly.

Perhaps one day senior manglement of these companies that seem above the law will be subject to being charged with handling stolen goods etc. but until then its win win all the way to the bank.

On a serious note its something Ebay needs to get a grip of....its not just MH's but lots of other types of vehicles....its almost to the point that there are more scams for sale then genuine one's... and its really annoying trying to sift through them all.... if most of us can spot the scams why cant Ebay and remove them..

I responded to an eBay listing a few years ago. Many Email exchanges leading to the seller being in Scotland - excellent says I - got friends there when can I come up to see it? Went cold after that.

FWIW most of the latest listings of motor vehicles are scams - dozens of them.

I reported them almost daily to eBay for a while and got bored of it. BUT folk do get scammed - £200 holding deposit that leads onto £500 & so on.

With all their clever algorithms you would think they could stop them before they get listed...

I thought l was street wise, always telling my kids all the golden rules about buying vehicles, that's until.... yes indeed nearly lost a wedge on a van in a secure compound, and a secure payment (escrow account), checking all the details before pressing the buy now button. One hour later there was a scam alert on auto trader, from there to police station for crime ref. The outcome?, l had contacted the bank before transaction for proof of account and that saved me. So smug me wasn't so clever, even after seeing all the docs on line l nearly came so unstuck. Having "helped the police with their enquires" in a positive way they actually caught the scammers, result! By the way this van was on four web pages, and even informing them l had a crime ref number there was no action until the police interviend. Buyer beware.

Good find!

Yes def a scam. The same vehicle is for sale on caravansforsale at £15900- ref number CS008D7E5. Location is Orkney.? The eBay advert is a clone of this advert seller based in Spalding but van is apparently located in Carlisle. For fun I messaged the eBay seller and got almost word for word the speil about lockdown and finance recovery etc etc

This is the reply I got to my enquiry - already knew this was a scam having searched found the Orkney genuine advert
“Yes, still for sale, can you please confirm a mobile no for a quick chat ?? we have all the paperwork in order, full service history, diesel, V5C, MOT, reg no: BU08GCO, no damages, clean title, no outstanding finance on it! The motorhome is ready to go and we can offer free delivery, selling for this price £9800.00 because this is a repossessed motorhome purchased via an auction house so we are looking for a quick sale due to this COVID-19 situation.

Hi where can I look at the vehicle and I know that might be difficult in these times but my sons are authorised vehicle examiners for the Police and I would like a full inspection before I decide on purchase. If you are in Scotland I have another son in Orkney who is also in the Police and one in the Met (London area) so inspection should not be a problem. Lock down does not apply to them and if vehicle genuine and free from defect cash waiting ( copy of e mail sent!)
And so far no reply how strange!

How many people in this Country use the term “clear title”

I thought that was an American expression.

I've just noticed it's still on eBay ! Does eBay take any notice of fraudulent listing reports? Doesn't look like it ?

Hi Jim

Thank you for your message. The reason why I have joined is my company is subject to a fraudulent act and found my details whilst searching on Google Krystyna Callow where some of the forum team have been discussing a pilot explorateur 703 for sale on ebay bu08gco as a scam. Krystyna has nothing to do with me and certainly my company and I do not have a motorhome for sale. Please can you pass on to the team that there is a scam out there on this motor home in my name and is not me.. I have had 2 letters sent to me in the post from prospective purchasers and if I hadn't received these I would still be non the wiser and have rang them both to say thank you for sending them and discussed the situation.

Hope that all makes sense. Any more info please do not Hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards

Matt

These Ringwood people sure do have a lot of vans for sale. I hope they know what they’re doing because there are some rather intolerant types out there who really don’t like being scammed and are in a position to take matters into their own hands.
