Prostate cancer. A useful resource.

I am encouraged by my FIL, diagnosed at 60 had a prostatectomy then, 5 years later hoping for all clear, PSA had risen. Cancer had spread to bones , put on hormone treatment 2005 age 65, still going strong 👍🙏
It just shows that you need to keep having the psa blood tests. It's very Important even though you may have had very low readings after "succesful" treatment. (y)

All of that sounds very familiar. I had my last of 20 RT sessions on the 14th August but in my case my final hormone injection was 23rd October. Right from the start of my treatment the consultant stated that my HT would only last for six months from the end of the RT sessions.
I've put on about half a stone during hormone therapy and reduced more things than I care to mention but with the HT coming to an end hopefully by Spring 2025 things will be slowly returning to nearer normal.

Others have mentioned how different regions approach treatment. My hormone therapy started 25th January 2024. Radiotherapy started 28th November. I am halfway through today (10 sessions), and the last session is planned for 27th December.

My consulatnt told me I wouldn't have to have any further hormone injections (the next one was due straight after Xmas). So my question is what's with the continuing HT for a period after the radiotherapy is completed? Need to research and ask some questions.

We are virtually indentical timing wise, hormone treatment started March, RT mid Oct - Nov

Been told my HT will carry on for 12 more months, next proper check / test for me is in March 25 where my consultant hopes I am one of the 80% who need no further treatment at this stage 👍🙏

Weight wise I quickly added over a stone following diagnosis, I think in my case this was comfort eating and feeling sorry for myself 🤔 I do like my beer and the odd gin, but have managed to drop 1/2 stone since RT ended last month, I do still have 18.5 to live off though 🤔🤣

We are all different , but I hope you can lose some too, but remember the bigger game here, it’s all about the long term gains 👍

I've no idea about the duration of HT after the end of RT. If I were you I would ask on the Macmillan Prostate Cancer Forum as I'm sure someone on there could advise.

This thread has come up at the right time. Hubby who's just about to turn 71 had a PSA test as he's going to the loo more than usual but not at night. A Dre at GP showed that his prostate was enlarged but felt normal but his blood test was 136. He had a hospital appointment today and another Dre showed that it was very enlarged. He's been put on hormone tablets and booked in for a CT scan and bone scan soon. So they've made the decision it's cancer before scans or biopsy. Hopefully caught early enough daugters keeping their sexy bras in case he needs them after hormones.

another indicator of different approaches by different hospitals / consultants maybe

I had a scan before biopsy but bone scan straight after , didn’t start HT for four weeks after diagnosis

Best of luck 👍🙏

I thought it was strange starting hormone treatment before a definite diagnosis. Think we hoped it was BPH.
Whatever we'll cope as we went through it with my tongue cancer and still hear 14 years later. Will he need a bra after hormone treatment.

I didn't just had a big fat belly....

all joking aside he will grow a pair of acceptable boobs that he wont want but wont need a bra but its better than the alternative ,ive been ht for a year now and want to stop it but i will do as im told probably

I haven't, I've only added about half a stone (6.35kg) pushing me to just over 14.5 stone (93kg) which I intend to loose if at all possible after my HT ends in mid January 2025.
Some muscle strength has diminished which I initially thought was due to aging, I'm 76, but the specialist PC nurse corrected me.
All the other things that diminish are well documented and perfectly true!

We're making light of it for daughters sake about keeping their old bras. He has put on a few pounds this year but still only 12 and a half stone. I'm sure we'll cope with all the other diminishing capabilities.
