Prostate cancer. A useful resource.

But to be fair he is the professional and knows more about the issues than you do.
Yes but the patient as the final say what treatment he wants ,i was offered removal or HT /RT i decided on mine thru talking to guys i know that been on journey , two guys i knew had it removed and one has never recovered continence, one mate had exactly same readings as me and was seven yrs ahead ? of me ,he had HT /RT my radiologist consultant said he expects me to have at least 10 yrs before any further action needed if any ?? Magic number 2( psa ) and no spikes allowed only gradual /steady readings . Basically theres a difference between surgeons who remove prostrates , and radiologist consultants .

I’ll be choosing Brachytherapy if and when treatment becomes the next step. After reading through all the literature they gave me and the explanations from McMillan and the Consultant it appeared the best option for me.
Anyone had it?

My consultant advised against surgery. I went with his suggestions of HT and RT . My mate, no messing, take it out. He is now incontinent and he is a GP!

I was told I was no suitable for it

I have presumed Chemotherapy, but haven’t heard that used for Prostate Cancer so could be wrong
I have had all 3 treatments consecutive .Commencing hormone on diagnosis ,followed by chemo then radiotherapy finished that just over a year ago hormone treatment goes on until the end of this year.

I wasn’t suitable , I think it depends on Gleason score and position, my Gleason score was too high and cancer close to outer edge

I have already been prescribed my flushing medication in readiness for RT and been told it’s essential it’s taken and that it works

Another regional variation I guess 🤔

Hi, yes I’m 9 months in after having brachytherapy at Western Hospital, Edinburgh, the leading cancer hospital in Scotland. I had a psa of 3.7, Gleason score 7, grade 2 cancer. Met with a surgeon who was very direct/matter of fact, told me I would have some incontinence issues/sexual function issues but cancer would definitely be gone. Brachytherapy consultant told me cancer outcome would be same as surgery, but should suffer no incontinence and hopefully no sexual function impairment.
Needed to pass some tests for suitability, mainly flow pressure and continuity, both are slightly impaired after treatment so waterworks need to be in good condition.
I had the treatment, 68 seeds inserted in prostate, out same day, no pain whatsoever. Was badly bruised around thighs and a bit painful passing water, given pills to ease this.
I describe it as a “miracle “ treatment, no pain, normal life straightaway, sexual function resumed, no incontinence whatsoever. Psa is now 0.2 next test is November, delighted with progress.
If you want a chat about it just let me know.

cancer would definitely be gone.
Hum ??? Again another friend ( i know a lot of guys with pc ) had his out and cancer wasnt gone had to have 33 fractions now psa undetectable .

I am now 3 months into my hormone injections, reading the Prostate Cancer U.K. information leaflets they say I will get regular PSA blood tests to confirm it is working

My urology oncology dept don’t do these checks , ‘trust us we know it’s working’

But it’s me who might die if it isn’t 🤔

Oncology nurse did say they are trying to get the outdated leaflets changed

Anybody else who has been through or is having the Hormone treatment prior to RT have you had blood tests

I am considering asking my doctor to do one, stating anxiety as the justification, if they won’t I am looking at getting one done privately

Ah, but you are not a doctor are you. Every case is different.

Have noticed a side effect of the RT presumably. I have no control of my rectum, it does what it wants when it wants. I imagine that this is due to the scarring.
Also, I need a hernia operation but this can’t be done laprascopically due to scarring so they’ll have to open me up. Eek!

Correct ,but i get the impression , percentages come into effect in the cancer field , i mean who would think that removal or RT have nigh on the same success rate for prostrate cancer

Just had a blood test a couple of weeks ago. After 3 x 1 month HT injections and the first 3 month dose. Must ring doctors for my result

Yesterday a doctor from my surgery rang to see how I’m getting on. She went over my discussion with the consultant and ran through some of the resources at my disposal. I mentioned PSA and she said let’s do one next week, booking me in immediately.

My daughter, whose husband died from a brain tumour last year, said that they didn’t get anything like this support until he was on end of life care, despite being with the same practice. I hope that there isn’t some hidden agenda!

OK guys finished my rt yesterday and then saw the doctor I already had an appointment for 26/08 and was asked to have a psa blood test in the preceeding week , it was then mentioned if the levels stayed low it would be carry on with hormone injections and I would be monitored on a 6 month basis ie blood test

Three months into my hormone treatment , I have had concerns about what is actually happening , allegedly my cancer is being shrunk due to lack of testosterone, but my oncology team do no blood tests to check anything

Trying to get into our doctors is a joke , so I found an online self test option and ordered one. Arrived today , I didn’t realise (or read properly) when ordering but it only says positive or negative , above or below 4

Test done , it’s a bit like a Covid test but using a blood prick sample , 10 mins later confirmed negative 👍😁

Definitely put my head in a better place

£25 well spent 🤔👍🙏 annoying that its so hard to get done as part of my treatment

My main concern was that the cancer wasn’t reducing and if PSA isn’t below 30 I can’t start the RT trial

All good now

Natural to have concerns , ‘ allegedly ‘ please ,respectfully , remove that word ,just go with the flow and procedure but fair enough you took a private test , remember you can tell a lot of funsters on here have been thru it . Best advice at the moment is manage your side effects of HT . Please send me private message if you need any advice , ok i am not professionally qualified but can speak what i been thru and what i have learnt from friends who have also been thru the process . Best of luck
