So, thanks to Martin funflair, we are now on the stellplatz at Wurzburg, right beside the fast flowing and very brown river. Got a great spot, but glad we have e&p levellers, it’s really uneven!

Had a great lunch in town, university band were entertaining everyone!

BillandHelen Heidelberg is well worth a visit if you have not been before.
The tec museum at Speyers and the town are very good if you are into anything motorised. It has a campsite next door.

Ha, I know, and we may never even get to Fussen, it looks like it’s raining there for the next 2 weeks! We will go to Rothenburg and Dinklesbull and the decide. Been very lucky with weather, no rain and lovely sunshine!

If you are in Wurtzburg, do not go near MainCamp!
Which is about 5 miles south, at Frickenhausen.

It's a large Camping warehouse, every possible item you could ever need for camping and motorhoming.
We made the mistake of just dropping in, on bikes, a couple of years ago.
We bought so much stuff that we had to drive back to pick it all up.
That said, every item has been used, and I'd love to 'just drop in for 5 minutes' again and reserve the afternoon.

They also have their own Stellplatz.

Be careful of German rivers flooding.
They come up really high really fast.
We cycled down the Danube just after the 'once in a thousand years' flood.
We stayed in a hotel where the water had destroyed rooms, on the third floor!
And somewhere we have a photo of a car in a massive tree. It's about 60' up!

camping and caravanning since a kid. New to motorhomes
Yes, we came over from Newcastle too, got lucky, loaded right at the front and were on the boat at 3.30, never been as early! Quick exit off the boat and through passport control in half an hour! Good luck on your journey.
couple of years ago. 40 minutes after leaving home we were boarded and having a pint in the sky bar in the sun. (y) (y)

BillandHelen following your trip with interest.
Like BikerGraham we are heading over to Germany September
No idea where we are going until we get there  but you have given me some places to checkout thanks.
I do have the ferry booked though as getting on the Newcastle ferry needs to be organised well in advance.
we are on the ferry out of North Shields on 11th September and coming back from Ijmuiden on 10th October. Only a minimal plan as much prefer to wander about. (y)(y)

No air conditioning needed when we were there ;) although it did stay dry.

We are heading out on the 3rd
I have an urge to head north which was abandoned the last time we were over due to better weather towards the south.
Only area that didn't really work for us was the Black Forest I can't really say why it just did not click compared to other places we have been in Germany.
There are also places I would like to revisit.
Big country with lots of options.

We really really like Wurzburg! Think it’s a combination of it being a university city as well as a tourist area, so great cafe/restaurant culture. As ever, the lovely sunshine makes everywhere look better!

Architecture is also superb, with a huge number of churches, some of which we visited today.

We had drinks and lunch at a lovely Italian restaurant overlooking the river, which is a bit lower today.

For those who have not been on the stellplatz, there is parking along the river, which is very popular, 9 large but sloping pitches, and then mayhem all over the carpark with Motorhomes everywhere!

Fussen:

There are 3 commercially run Sellplatz'es in town, each one beside the other!
All on Abt Hafner Str. which is walking distance into the town.

There is not much difference between them.
The first one is the smallest, the last one is the biggest and the best with some limited facilities.
Make sure you have loads of €1 coins for the electricity.

Whilst we were there, each one was 100% full, with the only people getting a space were those in the queue outside at 08.30h.
Each one was running a strict 'one out one in' policy.
Parking is tight. Decide which is most important, opening windows or opening door, as you wont get both.

We ended up being stuck there for 6 days a couple of years ago, as we arrived just before a long holiday weekend and simply could not find a single campsite with available space anywhere else.

There are some nice campsites around the lake.
BUT I have yet to see a more expensive cost per night.
They were all fully booked, months in advance, and must have been raking it in.
We were in the middle one mid May and it was 30% full and the others likewise . Not metered electric , great facilities and nice and quiet

Moved on again this morning, down to the v popular Rothenburg o.d.T, in the P2 stellplatz, all very nice with even a clean(ish) toilet block.

IMG_1793.jpeg

Please don’t tell the stellplatz police that I’ve got my awning slightly out to cover the fridge vents!!

We think we will stay here for a couple of days as it’s now weekend and places are filling up. The town is lovely even full of American tourists on bus trips! Had a good walk round and a fab lunch at hotel Schone, amazing fresh veg with grilled trout, who said you can’t get good food in Germany!!
