What a fabulous day it’s been here, wall to wall sunshine, temperatures don’t quite hit the Lenny HB benchmark, but it’s hot enough for us Scots!! 😎.

We walked the walls of the town this morning and then had a lovely leisurely lunch in a shady hotel terrace, bliss!!

In the afternoon we (foolishly) went for a cycle ride on our Bromptons, thankfully was able to restore ourselves with banana splits at a wonderful ice cream parlour.

Stellplatz is absolutely full tonight, we are on the upper level which has no spaces and even on the larger part only v sloping parking left and Motorhomes are still arriving.

Since July 2013 but been camping for 25+ years
We were on the same stellplatz a couple of weeks ago, plenty of space if you didn't mind not getting electric, but it did fill up quickly.

We were in the York this weekend and spoke to one of the staff in the Christmas shop - they get sent to head office (Rothenburg ob der Tauber)
to do their training!

Another short potter today, down to the gorgeous little town of Dinkelbuhl, only 50 km. parked up in stellplatz P5, €8 a night, it’s a nice enough spot but very sloping, again glad of our E&P levellers which are on max!!

Town architecture is just amazing, great restaurants and cafes and was buzzing with visitors.

Well, we have completely failed on our pottering to Fussen! Got to Augsburg, stellplatz closed due to heavy rain, temperature was 12 degrees, Fussen forecast for next few days rainy/heavy showers and very cool.
So new plan, headed cross country and are now on the lovely stellplatz at Bad Durkheim, great pitch overlooking the vines and a short walk into the busy wine route town. €14 per night.

It’s a sunny/cloudy 20 degrees here today, we arrived in time to wander down for lunch, one of the towns claim to fame is a restaurant inside the worlds largest wine barrel, it’s an amazing sight. For those who think German food is all schnitzel, we had a delicious beef carpaccio and prawns and crayfish tails with tagliatelle, all with a lovely glass of grauburgander, wonderful!

After a good walk around town, with a nice wine purchase we stopped for ice creams at one the many parlours in the centre.

Think we will stay here for a day or two before heading northwards to the Moselle.

We are up in the Moselle now at a stellplatz in Piesport, lovely position right on the river with vines all around and a great restaurant a short walk away. Bit blustery on the drive down and stellplatz is surprisingly only about half full, when we have been here before either Easter or September you have to be on early for any chance of a pitch.

We seem to be attracted to large Morelos, parked beside another one!! Price is €15 per night, but includes electric and water.

IMG_1852.jpeg

Along from the site is the first wine vending machine, makes a change from coke or pizza making machines!

Pottered along the river towards Bernkastel Kues today, it’s Helen’s Birthday so want somewhere with a bit of life about it.
Stopped at the Sun Park stellplatz in Graach and pitched up beside the river. There’s not many vans on, the owner said it’s been very quiet in June, they are also just recovering from being flooded out.
Price is up, now €18 which includes electric, water and toilets/showers, no discount for no electric!! So it’s not just the Caravan Club! 😀

Got the Bromptons out the boot and cycled along the river to Bernkastel, to be honest it’s a bit too touristy for me and finding decent food/wine is trickier than other places. Choose a local hotel and had very agreeable champagne to celebrate along with some very nice fish.

IMG_1856.jpeg
IMG_1858.jpeg
IMG_1862.jpeg

Then it was down to the bakery in the square for cake as desert, it’s one of the reasons we come back to Bernkastel.

IMG_1859.jpeg
IMG_1861.jpeg

Then back to a small vinoteck opposite the campsite for a celebratory glass of wine. It’s a good life!

Moved along the river to Zell, the 2 Stellplatz are now run by the local campsite, the one just off the road bridge has been extended and entry is by barrier and payment at a machine. There is also a fast food/drinks bar open till 7pm.

Zell was as picturesque as ever, couple of cruise boats tied up, restaurants and cafes all pretty busy. We had an ok lunch at an Italian and very nice ice cream at a local cafe.

Weather continues to be absolutely lovely, though thunderstorm is forecast for Cocham tomorrow which is where we are heading to.

So, another 50k potter down to Ernst, which is about 5k away from Cochem and easily cycled along the river path. The stellplatz is a long term favourite of ours, but since we have last been there, they have built a new extension with an additional 20 places. It is owned by a vinotech and you are given a small bottle of wine when you check in! Cost €11 per night.

Those watching the football would know that there has been a major thunderstorm warning over part of Germany, well if hit us at 11 o’clock today, huge thunder, some v scary lightening and v heavy rain, lasted about an hour then gone. Left an absolutely beautiful scorching afternoon behind.
We cycled along to Cochem, devastated to find our favourite cafe at the Hotel Germanica was gone, they served the best cake in Cochem!!
Never mind, found somewhere else quite acceptable!

IMG_1877.jpeg
IMG_1878.jpeg

Had a great walk round Cochem, Castle is always impressive, views across the river lovely.

Well, it’s time to start pottering our way back towards Imjuidin and our ferry next week. First stop is Ahrweiler and a site/stellplatz that’s one of our favourites. However the whole Ahr valley suffered tragedy 2 years ago with masssive flooding.

Petra’s site and her home were completely wiped out, you can see the damage to the house, the pile of stone was the toilet block and washrooms.

IMG_1901.jpeg
IMG_1902.jpeg

She has managed over the past 2 years to get a hard standing back down, a stand pipe for water and a couple of cabins for an office. No electric, she says she is at the end of a very long queue for installation. Great to see Motorhomes back supporting her!

IMG_1900.jpeg
IMG_1899.jpeg

The town itself, though badly flooded, is as beautiful as ever, the church is being totally restored, outside complete inside just starting.

Lunch today in a Spanish restaurant, oddly situated in an ancient German building. Weather still warm but thunderstorms are forecast for later tonight.

Well, that’s us nearing the end of our month in Germany, had a night in Bad Benthiem, lovely little town with a huge castle in the centre, an amazing cake shop(!) and decent restaurants. The farmers market was underway when we arrived on Friday, so a bit trickier to park up.

So, another holiday over, just boarded Princess Seaways at Ijmuiden. Have spent the past 3 nights at Camping Alkmaar. Fantastic site, mainly laid out with hardstsndings for Motorhomes, 2 service bays, lovely landscaping. Very strict on their parking code, must be nose in no matter what side your door is on!!

Weather has been absolutely scorching( well for us Scots) and we have spent our time between the town of Alkmaar and its canals and the artist village of Bergen which is full of individual shops and wonderful cafes and restaurants.

Would thoroughly recommend Germany as a holiday destination, their stellplatz are second to none, everyone friendly and welcoming and if you stay away from tourist hotspots then the food is also great! Can’t wait to return soon.
