hi funsters
What generators do you use and recommend and are the any good
got solar and big battery but looking for something to supplement in winter months when our gold friend in the sky isn't playing out much

I used to sell them, for many years tried it down at Garmish it was running on gas it smelt for every one round me and I decided then it was not so good when other people were close, so I give up selling them. They were sold in large numbers at shows and for open field rally’s in the winter they’re ideal, but not for me.

I'm a very light sleeper, and strangely, I can sleep through constant noise, but not intermittent.
I sleep through rain but the drips from the tree (or someone slamming their door on a coachbuilt 🙂) when it has ceased, wakes me up! 😡

Ive got a nice 1600w Ford one. Its quiet as gennys go. Used it around 4 times but now have a large lithium battery so its up for sale if anyone is interested

I don't think it somehow matters what we all think about generators, good or bad idea, sensible more considerate alternatives etc, reading his responses thus far I think garry63, had made his mind up before asking the question....He Is Having One!..End of!

LES
I have sar and big battery, my point is if wild camping and need to boost batteries I think its handy to have one rather than panicing that electric is down

We were on a THS at Beadnell and a bloke brought out an "industrial" open frame type genny from his garage and I thought "That's our peace and quiet ruined !" but you actually could hardly here the genny running ......over the noise of the full sized Dyson upright his wife plugged into it ! 🤦‍♂️

Absolutely the best portable generators are the Honda EU type, we have an EU20 but that is now replaced with the EU22.

A lot of the replies that you have received have not really taken into account your circumstances.

I would additionally say that having a portable generator is godsend in times of crisis, we saved a family Christmas dinner when the power went off by using the generator to keep things warm on a hostess trolly (the main cooking had been done).

A lot of people who comment on this forum just think that all MH users go to camp sites, I rarely go to campsites of any kind, much more likely to find me at a motorsport event and no one gives a toss if you run a generator for a few hours.

Honda EU22 is what you need and you will not be disappointed for one minute.

Generators are only any good if you are camping in a field on your own. Too noisy and intrusive if you are near anyone else. Even the quietest ones the Honda's the sound travels and is intrusive.
With you on that one Lenny. Too intrusive and noisy. No need for generators on a camper/motorhome. Anti social.

Think we all are, as is the OP, he clarified many times he will not be using it on a campsite nor overnight

Not where I go, you are looking at the question from one point of view.
100% agree, think many are suggesting they are some sort of devils product…..um but they are pidgeon holing everyone into club site type stays…

and exactly at an agricultural show, just like motorsport…..will a 65db genny really be noticed when a tractor pull is ongoing……..

To be fair the OP's original post makes no mention of where he might use it. Therefore if we had recommended a machine suitable for use at a motor or agricultural event, and they went to a nice quiet CL or even a formal campsite, and then came into conflict with others, we would not have done him any favours at all.

The original post did not but subsequently he did

If you get a genny, I'd suggest Honda, converted to LPG. You already have gas on board and probably not petrol.
However, you may be fretting unnecessarily. With good battery monitoring (and a good battery) you should be able to manage consumption in a way that avoids blackouts.
An alternative (cheaper and lighter) solution may be a B2B charger.
There's more than one solution to a lack of solar power. I spent 6 happy years without any solar at all.

Here are a couple of photo's for the doubters.

Honda EU20 running light, high 56 Db at around 4 metres and low 50's at around 7 metres, background noise was around 42 Db.

Db meter was on the A weighted scale and on slow response for those who know anything about it.

You can hardly hear it, to give you some idea of the noise when I walk across those pebbles I get 60Db.

Cheap junk generators have given the good gear a bad rep.

The point being your neighbour might be able to hear it :(.

Absolutely fine if you're completely solitary
I seriously doubt that I would hear it inside the MH, do you want me to go and test it and give the Db numbers?

I just went out and done the test, background noise in the MH is 23Db. When you breath sat in the seat near the Db meter the noise goes up to 31Db generator running sat 2.5 metres behind the MH is 23.5Db.

Of course, the test does not account for junky generators or poorly insulated MH's.

Wasn't thinking of inside, but the put putter put put whilst I'm sitting outside

But being accurate I could hear next door's at Abingdon whilst inside (a honda). Of course he put it on it my side, not his... I wonder why

If there is a db number then there is a noise to be measured. 💥
Exactly like I said the Db meter picked up the noise of my breathing and that was then the dominant number not the generator running outside, you literally would not hear it if the radio was on or the central heating fan was running.

Like I said different generators would give different results.

Can't believe the thread has come to this.
Everything makes a noise thedog kids the bleeding mrs. Do we all have to crerp about incase we upset someone's delicate hearing.
Next we won't be able to fart in our vans incase the neighbours with their hearing aids turned up to the max hears it
THE WORLD GOING NUTS 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪

But the OP would not need to run the genny if you were outside enjoying the sun as his solar panels would be doing the job !! he needs it for the dark winter in the middle of nowhere.

Exactly, a lot of folk on here don't like being proved to be pedantic. The bird singing in the tree above the MH was more noisy but some folk have got in their heads that genny's are bad news.

My advice remains the same buy an EU20 or 22, that one is 15 years old, what the thread has reminded me of is to change the oil and spark plug as that has not been done since new.

For your use you would not hear it all if about 5 metres out from the MH on an extension lead. I clearly understand your use requirement.

Well said……

funny how many mention the imaginery annoyance of noise, one even suggests running the vehicle engine for thirty mins to charge the batteries……..madness, no good for the environment or the diesel engine….

but no one has mention the main hazard….petrol exhaust fumes - CO - lethal..
