Autotrail
Hi everybody, ive bought a motorhome and im having a problem, i picked up a new autotrail imala 736g from a large dealership on 24th november and have had problems , i could not drive it at first due to a broken wrist so my stepdad drove it home for me and parked it on the drive with 60 miles on the clock , my first drive in the van was 23rd december . as i arrived home the red light came on saying maximum oil level exceeded , now with 150 miles on the clock i called the dealership and their was no reply as they had closed for christmas , i phoned fiat recovery and it took them over week to recover it and take it to the dealership they now say that there was 2 litres too much oil in the van , should i ask for a new van , they say its ok now but im not happy about it ,

lots of new vehicles dont have a dipstickcrazy but true they rely on engine manage ment shutting it down in an emergency
Yup Volvos for example. Electronic only and a right rigmarole to check. Dipsticks don't lie. Every other fluid level can be eyeballed ( not fuel obviously) but not oil, I just don't get why the simple dipstick was replaced by an electronic sensor!

If it comes on again I’d be worried, there are reasons engine oil level can go up. None of them good but if the dealer admitted putting extra in you probably have nothing to worry about.

When you turn the ignition on wait a few seconds for it to carry out its checks on of which will be to show you how much oil is in the sump (approximately) if you turn the key to start it will miss some of the pre start checks. A short run with too much oil will not. Normally cause any problems. But keep checking it regularl. On a rare occasion diesel can leak past the piston rings and slowly fill the sump. But unlikely Ona new engine.

Come on folks. Most probably an autocorrect error. The OP probably meant 'motor' engineer.
There has been plenty of time to respond or edit the post ,but hasn't had the bal* s to do it. (y)

Maybe he hasn't been back on this thread to realise he's type it wrong?????

Right not having a Volvo again...well not unless it's a 740!

I would ask the fiat agent to take an oil sample and have it tested for fuel or water ingress also was the correct oil added if it was over filled, if all ok then the chances of any damage is almost zero. I was a moronic fiat engineer until I went back to DAF.

I think there’s a limited time-frame in which to edit posts… that’s even if he came back to this thread to see the typo.

Yes a limited time frame to edit the OP but they could have put a new reply on correcting the mistake!

Ok thanks for all the replies from those of you who have read my original post and replied with sensible advice , just to clarify for anyone that cant read , the oil excess oil warning light came on at 150 miles , the dealer admitted there was too much oil in , they didnt put any oil in and neither did i , it was oil not mixed with fuel or water , it sounds like those of you who know what there talking about dont think its going to be a problem, thanks for the reassurance, im going to pick it up today and start enjoying it
Oh and there is definitely not a dipstick on these new engines .its my first time on the forum and i had to join after my first couple of posts which stopped me from replying last night waiting for my membership to be verified , it seems there are some decent people on here and there are some tw@TS they know who they are , THANKS AGAIN for the sensible replies

Love it  ... I'm sure there are some 'morons' on here but real motor engineers will know you meant no offence! It game me a good giggle though! :giggle:

To quote John Mackenroe "You cannot be serious!". :giggle: The 't' and 'r' are right next to each other on the keyboard so obviously just a typing error.

Exactamundo!
It was a spell checker error and you would have known that wouldn’t you.😟

Hi,it should still have a dipstick,as well as the oil level indicator in the dash which ,on my van only comes on at start up ,and if there are any issues. The dipstick should be at the very front of the engine.
I do stand to be corrected though
I think you may be right, although the OP does not say what chassis it's on.
A couple of years ago, while staying on a Dorset campsite, a New Fiat arrived and me, being nosey, I got chatting to the owner who had only had it for 3 months and was convinced it had no dipstick.

This was a big no, no for me, being old school, so I asked to have a look under the bonnet. He said it would be interesting as he hadn't seen the engine either
Initially, it did appear he was right BUT after some more searching I found it tucked under the very front of the engine. Perhaps the OP should have another look? :giggle:

There seems to be some confusion, i haven't posted any thing about motor engineers or morons , thats someone elses post,,,??
My non-techie understanding of potential issues associated with over-filled oil is over extended time \ mileage it's not good for seals. Given you've only done negligible mileage there won't be an issue.
Other more techie folk will correct \ expand if I've got it wrong.(y)
Anyway, pleased to hear you're collecting and getting on with enjoying it.(y)

You'll get loads of great advice on here and don't let those that "side track" put you off.(y)

ps :HelloThere:

:hiya: and welcome. This is a fast moving and excellent forum and always lots of banter, typos, and sometimes bickering - but mostly helpful, informed advice. It does mean that there are quick responses.
Stick around and get to know us 🙂

What chassis is this, I want to avoid it?

Being a, dipstick as you call it, I have seen cars without but not trucks and vans? (I've led a very sheltered life.)

Hope all goes well from here on, I dont think your dramatising the post with the ‘nightmare’ suggestion helped with the reactions

We have a Mercedes , oil level can be checked on dash board, works well for me being non technical and a little lazy 🤔👍

Driving through Norway our oil light came on, checked level on dash and it said add 1.5 litres 😳 I was mortified and feared potential damage, rang our service dealer who said it wouldn’t harm the engine, telling me they are built with large tolerance to cover the failings of most van drivers 🤔😁

Hopefully works the same with overfill 👍

To be fair I only ever use the dipstick when changing the oil, I have always relied on the dash reading write or wrong

I have just watched on YouTube a 'hand over' by Tyne Valley motorhomes of a vehicle like yours dated June 2021 and guess what, it has a dipstick!

Now I'm really confused??? but still polite, I hope?
The ops might be on the new multijet 3 2.2 engine

IF I really thought that, I would not waste anymore of my time on here asking.

IF one wants FREE advice, one always has to pick the bones out of the Steak, as my Chief Engineer used to say! :giggle:

Now this is a rare occurrence, I think someone's taken my advice and it's suddenly gone quiet!
