Peniscola any good?

This autumn we stayed at Camping Los Pinos for one night on the way south, a bit of a small camp and the spaces are a bit cramped but pleasant enough, a bit of a walk to get down to the town, but remember to take your gate key with you as the gates are closed after 9pm, luckily it not too difficult to climb over the wall.
On the way north we stopped at Camping Eden, this is a much more comercial site, with more facilities, two minutes from the beach, and a nice stroll along the sea front to get to the old town.

We've stayed at Camping Eden a few times for a week at a time. There are some small pitches so have a good walk round before you commit - they expect you to anyway. It's in two parts as far as I remember, the one to the right is quieter for some reason. A nice town but was pretty well closed up in January, also there were restriction signs about taking dogs onto the beach although nobody seemed to be taking any notice of them..........
Bit of a trek to the supermarket though there is a small one on site for absolute basics open limited hours.

Peñiscola - There's also motorhome parking by the harbour. In off season the parking machines are switched off. There were around 6 vans there when we visited.

Advised not to park in the spaces marked "bus" as they will ticket you.

It's on park4night and is daytime only.

Plus loads of parking by the the "El Cid" beach.

Not much more to add, we also stayed at Camping Eden, it was v busy, so I would be inclined to arrive before lunch to ensure you get on. Some pitches were small and the road ways between pitches quite narrow. Not great for bigger vans, but there were a few bigger pitches. Easy walk into an interesting town, only staid for 1 night, didn't feel the need to stay any longer.

We stayed at Camping Los Pinos October 2021. A little further out of town but really cheap. About 10 Euros a night with ACSI inc. electric, wifi, lovely clean showers/toilets, swimming pool.

Had fun when we got back after 10pm one night though - had to break in by climbing a fence as they lock up the gates and no one was around!!

Been there, done that. Unfortunately my wife was in her wheelchair, so I had to leg it back to the van to get the fob to unlock the gate to let her in.

Is the Pensionista (cafe supplying meals to wrinklies) still going?

If you can find a more cosmopolitan crowd with all nations sitting down outside, I've yet to find it.

To be honest I prefer Benicarlo to Peniscola. Benicarlo is a proper working Spanish town with some tourism added on. A great market, a proper fishing port, some great fish and seafood, local bars and cafes. One year we were there for the 3 Kings celebration which was a fantastic spectacle both on sea and land. We nearly got trampled to death by kids getting the sweeties thrown from the floats. Having said that, the beach at Peniscola is gorgeous and the Citadel is a great visit. We’ve stayed at camping Algeria every time and can highly recommend.

And Benicarlo has a great motorhome workshop if you need anything fixing/upgrading.

https://tambomotorhomes.com speaks good English and very helpful

And the Benimar factory is there too.

And if you want a change... A Parador for a bit of luxury. Have stayed there a couple of times on bike trips "doing the N340"...

There was a Pensionista next door to the church we used attend in San Fulgencio, when we had an apartment near Alicante, that did a lovely coffee for €1 after the service.

There used to be a fantastic one in La Cala near Mijas Costa.

Excellent food and great atmosphere in the evenings.

Did you go to the site Christmas lunch? We’ve been a couple of times and one year had a great time trying to explain crackers and paper crowns to a bemused French couple.

No Barry we had a picnic down the beach planned for Christmas. Did sound like a good bash though (y)

Hmmm...Benicassim? Or Castellon de la plana ?? ...

'Pxnis-cola' is without doubt your chance to experience the best of what remains of original Spanish tourism. The castle is great if you don't mind a walk up and down a gradient - I took a buggy with a kid in it once and wouldn't recommend that. The boardwalk is great and if you find it too far, then hire one of the bikes, trikes or pedalled quads and go for a spin. Benicarlo is refreshingly nearly completely untouristy and that's where you go (on the bike) for your shopping with a Bonpreu and Lidl conveniently close. There is a free camperstop south of Benicarlo literally on the boundary of here and Peniscola but I heard it wasn't overnight. I also recommend the Aire for €8.50 a day. 50m to the beach and surrounded by restaurants and bars - tho a good dander to the castle. not to be missed!

Thanks Paul , been at benicarló for nearly a week now ...do you think Peniscola is worth spending the next week+ over 3 kings ? Or is there somewhere else better ? Thanks in advance.

If you mean the one by El Barranquet beach, yes, the signs now prohibit overnighting.

Still not made a decision on our next move from benicarló, any suggestions much appreciated. ;)
(Looking for a site to base ourselves for a week or 2 rather than a stopover)

I haven't spent time in Peniscola during the 'Magic Kings' holiday but I imagine that like in all towns around, they'll put on a parade and it'll be a spectacle on the night of the 5th January with lots of people given the unseasonably warm weather - it was 24C in my (unglazed) porch this morning and I'm 45k north of Barcelona! here is the link to the Ajuntament website to check what's on, where and when - go to everthing! https://www.peniscola.org/. I have been hankering for a couple of nights by the coast this Xmas but family circumstances have kept me from doing that, so please do spend the time in Peniscola, please tell us the good and the bad and I sincerely hope you have a great time!!! if you park in El Daus, then you should hire some bikes from these people if they are open: (Avinguda del Papa Luna, 12598 Peníscola, Castelló) They are Dutch and I and the kids have had a great time on several occasions with their machines!

Good morning Paul, we thought we'd stay at benicarlo and go to peniscola on bikes but thats just not happened.
Today we move on to benicassim so lets hope the 3 kings celebrations are good there .

Not to worry! Isn't it the reason we have these vehicles to be able to change plans and do exactly what you have done?! In Benicassim and if you're feeling fit and able, I recommend either biking or walking (or running if that's what you're into) along the old Benicassim-Oropesa rail line, at the northern point of Benicassim close to the coast. I've run it a couple of times and it's a good march to work off all that turron and cava

I think i've found it , i'll go for a mooch later ;)

Should you get as far as Oropesa, treat yourselves to una beguda i pinxo at one of the bars on the platja de la conxha (I think that's the correct spelling in Valencian! This is the beach immediately below the railway bridge at Oropesa - you might need the energy to get back!
