Overheating Ducato brakes

You didn't have much power on trucks pre 1970 so didn't need brakes
Hydrovac and air over hydraulic were pretty useless any way back then...Thought I had died and gone to heaven when I drove a Foden with full air brakes back in late 60s...BUSBY.

I do that and pull over whenever there is a place to do so on the side of the road, let the queue pass and start again.
Dad was an HGV mechanic and driver [usually 'off the tools' when his diesel dermatitis flared up] who taught me to drive. 1 lesson being wrapped over the knuckles with a short ratchet extension taught me to pass the steering wheel; and several high volume instructions to a] concentrate on my driving, leaving everyone to concentrate on theirs; b] if traveling slowly, leave gaps and move across to get quicker stuff past [including layby 'quickstops']; and c] if HGV moves to Lane 2 to allow you to join the motorway, don't roar up the inside, keep a moderate speed until the HGV can get past, flash the lights as soon as you can see his back end clear to enable him to return to Lane 1 earlier, and then accelerate and pass the HGV, before returning to Lane 1 with the 'Thank you' indicator routine.

Hi Busby, I can remember being out on deliveries with my dad when I was very young and he was driving an old lorry with vacuum brakes, halfway down bluebell hill it ran out of vacuum and he had to jam it in second to slow it down. He like you was so happy when he got a lorry with full air brakes.

A fellow fitter had a Morris Minor on the ramp and had removed the brake master cylinder and was waiting for a replacement to arrive. Someone else needed to use the ramp, so the fitter drove the Morris off the ramp straight into the garage doors opposite. He was amazed that the brakes did not work when he pressed the pedal!!!!!!

Ah well in this modern age he would have had to put a big sign on the dashboard saying brakes inop and a wheel clamp on at least 2 wheels so it couldn't actually move and remove the run-up ramps so it's obvious you shouldn't be taking off the ramp and put crash cushions around the workshop doors to avoid damaging them and sign a disclaimer before entering the workshop so no one at or above management level could be held responsible for any possible damage

Hi, we have a 2017 Burstner on a Ducato Chassis. At 22,400 miles the front disks needed changing and new pads all round. After they were fitted, the smell of brakes was quite strong and there was a sound coming from the brakes when moving, and the wheels were covered in black brake dust. The disks were getting very hot just on a 4 mile drive back from the garage. It seems a fairly common problem with the Ducato, it is as if the calipers are not releasing properly.
I think your brakes are binding ?

Not read thread all the way but when I bought my mhome new part of the kit included two black triangular chocks with a steel leading edge.
I vaguely remember somewhere in the dim and distant past that these must in some countries be carried by law.

Those are the Al-Ko chocks always get them with an Al-Ko chassis.
In Germany over 3.5t you must use chocks if parked on a slope.

Is that because the Hand break is not up to the job, even the mot testers say oh it’s Alko☹️

Good qoute also ideal time to open waste water valve:reel:

I would suggest that you DO NOT pour water on a red hot brake, this can lead to distortion and damage to the disk and caliper!

PLUS. Ideally, waste water should have been drained before start of journey thus reducing weight?

Always remember that when brakes got really hot, the handbrake may well grip but, caution is required, as the brakes cool they will contract.
This happen to my first camper, a Fiat Amigo, years ago luckily it just rolled across the car park and damaged another vehicle

Back when I was in my teens I had to put new seals in the pistons of my car, and ran out of fluid when bleeding them. It was a kerb side motors job - outside the house in the road. Went indoors, washed hands (swarfega anyone?) took off overalls, rolled up a fag, quick cuppa tea, then off to the motor factors to buy a new tin. Yep - you're right. Straight down the road pumping like heck, over the main road and into the cricket ground fence luckily only doing about 5mph by then.
