Outrageous Pricing!

I'm off work this week, not because there isn't any work, no there's a big job in Maidenhead. I'm at home because the hotels are extortionate. Like £1400 to £2100 for the 4 lads going

Oh. Yeah, this time of year anywhere near London prices go mental. Tennis, Chelsea Flower Show is the reason AFAIK -> and Maidenhead is near enough it's impacted. June was only time of year I struggled when consulting in West London to get hotels. I had to go further out than Maidenhead and have a near two hour commute in for those weeks some years.

Despite having a deferred tunnel booking from a Easter trip that didn't happen, we've pretty much decided we need to stay in the UK this summer due to serious illness in the family (one parent). It'll likely be short trips away rather than our 3 or 4 week mega trip.

I've always fancied seeing Pembrokeshire and SW Wales so looked at a few sites to find out the cost. Oh my, even mid July the cost is easily coming in at over £40/nt for 3 adults and a dog, and some of these are no more than grass fields with a basic toilet block. No wonder we prefer to head a cross the channel.
If you only have a 2 week holiday time frame , by the the time you add on extra fuel to drive all the way to Europe , travel and breakdown insurance , Eurotunnel or Ferry outward and return journey its not so cheap .

We have been using some of the Haven touring sites and have been able to get five nights with electric for £55 ( Sunday night to Friday ) just done Porthmadog , Weymouth and Perranporth, didn't use any of the facilities on site but if that's your thing it all included in the price.
These prices wont be available when the kids are off school obviously.

we had a family party last weekend and we were trying to find hotels for a couple of our guests local wetherspoons in harwich wanted 175 for a night for a double room local caravan site 85 for a 6 berth caravan

At the risk of being accused of repeating my self, have you all seen this site put together by a member on here, free parking on pubs, ok I know you will say it's dear if you use the pub, but you will have to eat wherever you go, and saving 40 quid is a good start to your pub bill.

I understand why many people prefer to tour Europe and it is perfectly reasonable to extol all the advantages. However I don’t find it helpful when European prices are used to rubbish UK sites. The comparisons are often made with countries that are twice the size of the UK, have smaller populations, have different land values and different planning restrictions. I am a member of both the C&CC and C&MC because of their CS and CL networks but I am not a great fan of them or most of their managed sites. If I don’t like a site I don’t go back there and if I think the price is too high I don’t book it.
Totally agree! 👍

Not based on current forecasts which is why we don't ourselves book until about a month before in summer periods. Until the weather outlook is known it's too risky with the price of campsites these days.

When booking cheaper (£10-15p/n things we obviously do take a punt).

Sadly in life, we can't have everything we want! 😢

AND everyone who stays on Aires claim they want to support the local economy, seems to me a good way of achieving it? 😀

Just done nine nights around Scotland, average £19 a night. Would have been less but one site cost £32. Only one we had ehu (no option) it was an independent site. Managed three nights at a CAMC site ( first for two years) non ehu for £23.50 a night.

Not wishing to be argumentative BUT, I have never been able to stay on Haven site for 5 nights, (4 yes,) or had FULL ACCESS to ALL the facilities (including swimming pool )
for £55.
£49 for 4nights BASIC is the best I've seen?

How did you manage it? 😀

I dunno. I’ve said this before many times, I’ll say it again and I’m sure I’ll say it in the future. When we sold our site in 2013 we had to make an average of over £13 per pitch night sold before we started to turn a profit, selling about 10,000 nights per season. Thats all running costs, mortgages, loans etc and before taking into account any major repairs and capital developments. So at today’s rates that’s getting on for €16 per night. Sometimes out of season we outnumbered the campers.
Out of interest, how many pitches did you have?

As 10,000 nights a year sounds a lot.

We have done it for £9 a night but absolutely out of season

I try to avoid booking anything, even in UK. If no aire/freebie park-up available, I'll phone a CL the day before perhaps. Arranging a UK tour is a bit of a nightmare compared with 'over there' as, apart from honeypot locations in high summer, you never need to book anywhere.

All of the above make sense of my decision (a product of luck as well as judgement!) to acquire as my first MoHo a "mature" LHD van with full service history.
It can sit on my drive between trips abroad with occasional UK outings without me fretting that I have spent close to a six figure sum on an asset that is doing nothing.
So my focus is on finding the cheapest ferry fares. My GOTO choice is DFDS Newhaven-Dieppe. Given the overall cheapness of sites in Europe I can probably recover the ferry costs on my 6.00 metre Hobby T500 over a year. Just a shame I do not live nearer Newhaven or another ferry port!!

Don't forget Woodside Field if your find yourself around Bristol/Bath area. M4 J18 and want a CL close to the motorway.

Visitors are frequently mentioning that campsite prices are still rising. Would you say that also is the same for the smaller sites, has the average CL/CS now gone above the £20 mark?

Just went on Haven touring and booked Weymouth next week Sunday to Friday 2 people with electric , full use of facilities £55 , no code, no special offer !
I, too, love Haven sites and often use them.

Presumably they cover their overheads by caravan sales/rentals and food/drink sales.

Unfortunately small sites have to price camping pitches to cover these costs.

We had planning permission for 80 pitches but I felt the site was too full with 80 occupied. We would however go to this in times of high demand such a summer school holidays and bank holidays etc. This is when campers got the worst of value. A site that was really uncomfortably full and at the highest price. It also depended on the mix, 2 small tents taking up not much more space than one big one soon became 3 tents instead of 2, so pinching an additional pitch. However, a working average of 71 touring and tenting and 4 camping pods. So 75 in total. A season was usually around 235 days. So 235 x 75 is 17,625. An average occupancy of about 57%.

It has become madness in regards to pricing, a basic campsite just on the outskirts of Nottingham (previously Thorntons Holt - now called Nottingham - Camping and Caravanning Club Site) is £65/n or £55/n if a member, it was £30/n when privatley owned and from what I can see they havn't changed anything.. complete rip off.
They have done loads and spent hundreds of thousands on stuff you don't see such ad electricity cables, drainage etc.

Looks like prices are about the same then and nowhere near your guestimate, 5 nights less than 30 quid a night. Not saying its good value but hard standing and electric included.

Probably have had to put the price down now the barge is moored in Weymouth? 😀
