Decided this deserved its own thread 🤔

Our much loved Hymer is parked at Mertrux awaiting parts for an already expensive service

Took a phone call just now from Mertrux, I answered it very cheerily hoping for an update on collection date

To be told, sorry Mr Godfrey we are still waiting on parts arriving , but ….

A driver has just scraped the side of your motorhome with a lorry trailer

Driver admitted it immediately and is gutted for us knowing how precious they are to owners

It’s why we have insurance though

Just about to phone them back and ask them to gaffer tape round the garage door to stop rain getting in, ask them if they can see any ripples in the side panel where the awning has moved and find out if it was a customer driving or employee

Anything else you lot think I should do, other than cancel Alde service next week and SAP service week after 🙁

I would insist they deal with it and not involve your insurance company if at all possible

I think a lot will depend on whether it was a customer in their own vehicle or a Mertrux employee moving a customers vehicle

I am hoping the latter , it should make things easier, if former I think it will have to be through insurance for sure

It’s on their private premises so I believe they are liable. How they recover costs is their problem

Just spoken to Mertrux to get the garage area gaffer taped for now, it was a customer, possibly thankfully one of their bigger customers, they have been made aware and accepted damage down to them

Mertrux seem to think it will be going on the customers insurers which is what I would expect

No different to a bump in Tescos car park, don’t think you would get much out of Tescos unless it was one of their vehicles

Such bad luck, especially at this time when you are having so much other expensive stuff done to the van.
I really feel for you, hope you/they can find somewhere to carry out the repairs swiftly.
Best wishes.

Êither way it is nothing to do with you.Whilst it is in there'care' there insurance is liable & has to sort it out between themselves & the customers insurance.

It is completely different. A Tesco car park is a public space whereas the garage premises should not be.

My worst nightmare when taking the van to be serviced.
Put one of my tipper lorries in Adams Morley years ago for a service only to get a similar call to you but on that someone had driven into the front of it🤬🤬

Took ages trying to get them to sort it!!
Gokd luck with the fix👍

Have a good look inside where the awning is fastened ie cupboards. Saw one similar to this thought it wasn't too bad untill looking inside. Everything was out of line.Hopefully all will be sorted for you.

Who paid?

Who are the best bodyshop/motorhome experts in the area.
Would you think it will have to be a Hymer specialist?

It’s not going anywhere near a Hymer ‘specialist’ 🤔😳😁

Might have to buy bits from them I guess, but as virtually nothing for mine is available now it could be interesting

Actually right now hoping the side wall or roof is damaged and I will try for a write off

Going down tomorrow with a mechanically minded mate who rebuilds damaged cars

He will have a good look in good light, it’s raining and going dark now

Mertrux have just rung abnd they suggest cancelling the service work and get it recovered , think they want shot of the problem 🤔🙁

Will see how they are face to face tomorrow , my mate suggests getting them to do the prop shaft coupling and maybe the front discs, book it for an mot ourselves and bring it away

Think gus-lopez has got it right.

Think you might find your insurers will say the vehicle is outwith your control therefore it is insured by the third party who is responsible for it.

I would not move it from their premises until it is agreed in writing as to who is responsible for the repairs (both getting them done and the cost thereof).
As soon as it's off their forecourt they / their insurers will try and wash their hands of it (as you've said above)!

Bloody hell David , what have you done to deserve all this at once?
One good thing that might come of it though, if you can get it wrote off it will save you all those other costs, and get you a newer van.

If it happened on mertruc private premises and you have given it into their care then it will be all mertruc who is responsible for the damage I believe, they should have a segregated safe parking zone 👍🤷🏻‍♂️

What a bummer David but on a positive note it would be a lot worse if the awning hadn't been there to take some of the damage as it could have wiped the side out.

Just to add that Cannock resprays have a good reputation I believe and used by a lot of the dealers.

Adams Morley paid for the repairs just lucky it was only bodywork and nothing structural!!

My last words last year to the chap at Iveco Southampton was “do not park my van with the lorries” it’s ok he said it will be in the shed, yep came to collect and it was in the yard amongst the tippers and artic units🤬🤬 first and last time I let them have it!!

Just to clarify, who was driving the tipper when it hit yours?

I now know mine was hit while being driven by another customer in their own lorry

The drivers company have accepted responsibility and put it to their insurers

I phoned our IVECO main dealer to look at the alternator and they said "you will have to bring it in and just leave it for a couple of weeks" NO, when we first got it I took it in for some ECU updates and a white van man would have taken a mirror off but for the fact I was sat inside and managed to hit the horn, the service manager was watching out of his office window and said "I think we have space in shed round the back" it was OK there thankfully.

Don’t know just went off the head and AM said they would order up the parts and fix it😁

Easier fix than yours as it was just replacing panels and trim then a bit of white paint.

I think yours could run into a fair few £k😳😳

A write off might be the 'easiest' resolution but would it get you another one, just as good bearing in mind all your upgrades...
I honestly don't imagine they are going to write it off for that damage, unless there is a lot more we can't see, and I don't imagine that will be what David and Bev want either.

Oh I don’t know 🤔

Will see what we see tomorrow, if side or roof is bent / creased I suspect write off will be only option , it will all depend on whether the awning fixings gave way or held I reckon

Different all together when I took it for the second service to Stark in Bamberg, Motorhomes parked together and other vehicles in another spot. When you see a chap come up with a trolley full of paper and covers then start covering all the floors including steps you feel a bit more relaxed😁
