If you want to visit San Sebastián, camping Orio is ideal. You walk up to the town and get the train right into the centre

If you want to stay on the aire get there early in the day, around mid-day. Pitches are a bit cramped. I've been working my way down to Andalusia so can recommend Zamora for a stopover. If north coast, Laredo between Bilbao and Santander is nice. Not far to the Picos de Europa from there.

Thanks Cyberyacht, we’ll take a look at those.

In answer to the original question. KFC. Big bucket and anything that is left is food for the ferry the next day.

Walking distance from the port.

Woke up today and we were in the clouds! Drove down and it was overcast and raining across Northern Spain so swerved a sharp left and headed due South.
Now parked up in Camping Fuentes Blancas on the edge of Burgos. A bit pricey at an ACSI discounted price of 26euro per day but has all the usual facilities plus restaurant, bar and laundry.
Bus stop directly by the gate or easy walk/cycle to the centre.

So about £24 in proper money. You couldn't get a CAMC site in the middle of nowhere with just a toilet block for that money. Makes you think!
Also has a pool, playground and sports facilities (which are not yet in operation) so not so expensive after all compared to UK!

Update on Burgos.
I feel that I undervalued this site! Apart from the aforementioned facilities I have to add that the showers are the best we have experienced for a very long time for the following reasons:
Three large toilet/ shower blocks (two currently open)
Cubicles larger than average and two compartments in each with a large bench seat and hooks.
Lever action (as opposed to irritating 10 second push button)
Temperature up to scalding
Pressure nearly knocks you side ways
Flexible shower heads/pipe as opposed to fixed so you can wash everywhere if you know what I mean!

At one end of each block are washing up sinks, at the other end clothes washing sinks. (They do also have a laundry on site)

And if that wasn’t enough, in the centre of the motorhome pitches there is a stand alone area of 8 sinks, 4 for clothes, 4 for washing up, all with fully heated water.

Burgos:- this is a ‘must visit’
What a great city with a compact centre that is mostly pedestrianised with many plazas. The river runs through the middle and has wide promenades both sides with topiary and statues.
A proper cycle track runs past the site alongside the river and all the way into the city centre and there are further cycle ways throughout the centre.
The cathedral is magnificent, we spent 90 minutes exploring it.
There is a castle high up with far reaching views.
Prices are inexpensive and we found a great, traditional tapas bar before walking back to site, fully inebriated on sangria!

I hope the above is inspiring and helpful.

Today is Valladolid.
Not an exciting place especially after Burgos which set the bar really high. The very large park in the centre is worth a visit with various free roaming birds including peacocks, herons and swans amongst many others.

Two good motorhome sites:
The municipal one, 10 minute walk from the centre, which has large, marked pitches among rows of trees, black and grey water waste and fresh water, looks very nice for 5e for 24 hours.
The other one (where we are if you don’t need services) is in the next street, a large, unsurfaced parking area beside a small supermarket and greengrocers shop. Very level and free.
(To be honest, we would have used the official one as it looks so nice but we found this one first)!

Salamanca today!

Closest place to the city centre is ‘Aparcamiento Salamanca Puente de Sanchez Fabres’ found on ‘NKC Campercontact’ on the Garmin.
Got here at 10am and the parking area (less than 10 minutes walk from the centre) was already ‘rammed’! Managed to park in the only space entering the approach road (when we got back we realised it was on a single yellow line - oops) 😗
You need to get here much earlier or after 5pm when we noted that it was 50% empty. This is because the locals use it when they work in or visit the city

Not a particularly nice spot for overnight (or during the day really, unless you manage to park on the small tarmac area as the ground is VERY rough in places) so on our return at 5pm we immediately drove for about 8 minutes West along the river and found a really huge area of open rough ground and parkland with three very long, wide roads through it, parallel with the river and dedicated parking both sides of each road. Totally deserted, I can only think that it is a future development area. It also had a fantastic view of the cathedral - bonus 👍
Street names: Adolfo Suarez, Emilio Alarcos, Vargas Zuniga
On the far corner of this ‘estate’ is a fuel station for filling up with fuel, auto gas and adblue - sorted 👍

Salamanca itself was a great visit. Huge pedestrianised area with cobbled and stone streets with ancient architecture everywhere. Of course, the cathedral was magnificent. Definitely one of our best stops (along with Burgos).

As you are now in Salamanca, I strongly recommend that you visit Caceres, which is a very interesting medieval city.

Game of Thrones and other movies were filmed there.

This is very useful Purrfecttune, thank you.
We are heading to Newhaven tomorrow, also for our first continental motorhome trip. Six weeks in France, Spain, and Portugal if we get that far.

We’ve picked up loads of tips from this forum, thanks to all, and have plotted a few highlights to take in if our route takes us that way. But really it’s just disembark in Dieppe and turn right. Excited now! 🙂

Thanks for the suggestion, we had ‘half an eye’ on Caceres already 👍

Additional information on last nights stop.
As already stated, a huge and deserted area (on tiers) with the petrol station in one corner, not a sound all night.
This is a great overnighter even if not visiting Salamanca as it is directly off of the A-62, West of Salamanca (look for ‘Repsol el Marin’, the area is directly behind it).

We usually stop off here and cycle in to the centre. It’s a great little stop over.

Todays stop: Villanueva Avila
Nearly 2 hours from Salamanca, up in the mountains towards Toledo.
A small village with a FREE aire (10 spaces) providing grey and black waste disposal, fresh water and bins. Tarmac and fairly level.
The village has a bar/restaurant that has good reviews and fresh bread is available somewhere (not found it yet).
Staying here for at least two nights as we want a break from motorways, A-roads and cities.

Have accidentally posted the continuation of our journey on a different thread ‘To Dieppe and beyond’, D’oh!
I hate this getting old and confused thing !

For anyone following, yesterday we stopped at Consuegra
Motorhoming parking at the base of the castle and windmills in a big, open area.
No facilities other than a large picnic area, there is a toilet block but as previous blogs have stated, it is never open.
Not a great stop, with annoying flies everywhere but worth it for the very picturesque area where you can also see for miles.

Today we have stopped at Villanueva de los Infantes.
Apparently the birthplace of Don Quixote. Quite small and compact, has a medieval centre which is stunning.
Parking is a motorhome aire inside the edge of town, 1.25km from Plaza Mayor, an easy and interesting 15-20 minute amble down one street. Only 4-5 minutes if cycling.
VERY secure. 10 spacious pitches inside a large, thoughtfully laid out compound accessed by a large gate and surrounded by 6 foot chain link fencing hidden by rows of conifers, so quite attractive.
To enter, there is a touchscreen where you enter your details and you choose what facilities you require per 24 hours:
Parking only 6 e
Add electric for 2.5e
Add one visit to the shower block/toilets for 2.5e
Dispose of chemical waste and replenish fresh water plus 2.5e
Grey water disposal free
Strangely, no bins
We only paid extra for electricity as we have been without for five days. You don’t have to add anything extra on entry and can add it later during your stay as and when/if you need it, very useful.

Finally, we are heading South but in a bit of a zigzag, so tomorrow we will be heading towards Caceres with an overnight stop somewhere half way, and then down to Seville after that.

Today’s stop is Corral de Callatrava, (still in central Spain).
The town aire is a twin of yesterdays in every way including design, except that it does not look quite so well maintained with quite a few weeds.

Today is Labour Day so everything is generally closed, but a 5-10 minute walk into the centre of town revealed a few open bars with tapas, an open supermarket and open general store and also a restaurant with three courses for two people and a litre of red wine for 40e. Sorted!

The main reason for stopping here is we need to do some laundry and there is a highly recommended laundromat in the village of Argamasilla de Calatrava 16km away with easy parking on the street, so we will be able to arrive early tomorrow. (Chose this one in preference to a city as we felt that it would be easier and also offer further rural parking choices nearby for overnighting).

Argamasilla laundry (in the centre next to the church) really good. Three washers (6e & 8e depending on size) two dryers (2-3e for 15-16 minutes) dry cleaning, and a dedicated washing machine for pet items (5e). Prices for the ‘normal’ washing machines include automatic washing powder and softener.
You can pay by cash or there is a credit card machine where you choose which machine you want to use and then pay.
Plenty of roomy parking on the wide road directly outside, with easy access for motor homes if you go the right route. Even with the satnav I ended up traversing some of the trickier narrow streets and Julie needed a very stiff drink afterwards! 😰
A very small town, you can see anything of interest in 5 minutes so we had a cheap drink with tapas before moving on.

Now at Almodovar del Campo, 11km down the road from Argamasilla.
Found this on Park4night. Parked on an unpaved road directly above the town, next to the windmill.
No noise, no light pollution and far reaching views across both the town and the countryside.
The town has a couple of nice squares and parks, with a really interesting cathedral and Town Hall. Again, we had a couple of drinks with tapas before finding a patisserie for fabulous cakes for desert.
Now back in the ‘van’ relaxing with red wine and enjoying the views 😎🍷🍷👍

Today is Magacela.
Free parking
Free chemical waste disposal
Free grey waste disposal
Free water
Free Wi-Fi
AND
Free electricity at 16amps
Six spaces for up to 8m motorhomes and if full, there is a flat, waste ground area right next to it where you could probably fit another six of any size.
A very, very quiet area, we intend to attempt the climb up to the castle tomorrow morning when it’s cooler (21c at the moment).
There is a convenience store close by , along with a bakery. There are bars, Spa shop and pharmacy going up the hill en-route to the castle, (we will likely need to visit all three)! 🥵😬😗🍻😁👍
