olden days

Gollywogs on Jam Jars......

Yes, we always knew them as "gollywogs" and I can remember collecting the stickers......but we went into a shop in Kirkcudbright a couple of years back to look at toy Gollywogs and the shopkeeper scolded Bill for saying "gollywog". He said to her, "I was brought up calling them Gollywogs and I will continue to call them that"! She wasn't happy at all.......

And the crystal radio set...Anyone have one?

No, but used to have a small transister radio......I am sure we called them "trannies" as teenagers. Tranny has a completely different meaning these days:RollEyes:

The tranny would take a PP8 or 9 battery and I used to listen to the top 20 on Radio Luxemburg on a Sunday night from 11 pm (charts night).
I would fall asleep with the radio under my pillow and the battery was flat by the following morning:doh:

Happy days!

I remember them well. I was listening to Radio Luxemburg with my cousin on one when President Kennedy was shot. We didn't understand the significance or seriousness of it all until they announced that they were stopping playing pop music and substituting it with Classical music....Really pissed us off!! :shake::shake::shake:

Cassette recorders, taped the top 20 on Sunday afternoon. Drove you mad if the DJ talked over the music then rewinding to delete bad bits, oh what fun!!!

I remember that well......you would try to press "stop" just before the DJ came in at the end of the song........ usually Tony Blackburn.
Brilliant, happy days right enough.......I remember Bill telling me that he used to record the charts and his Mum's clock used to strike during it. Then the first time he managed to get all the charts in without any clocks striking in the background, his Mum would appear through the door and shout "Teas ready Billy"......

"Cassette recorders", they were a modern invention!!....Now reel to reel, they were brilliant but big and bulky. Bet someone is going to remember the old 78 players with the large trumpet speaker thingy?!!
Back to the crystal set, they were really small "gadgets" that we kids made up ourselves, could sometimes get Luxemburg but more than likely just the "Home Service" ...

Bill has just told me that he can remember his Gran's old 78 player, they used to play Harry Belafonte on it at Christmas.
It needed winding up, it would start off normal and he would sound alright, but if it got too slow his Gran would shout, "Wind the gramophone up, will you"!
If it got too slow the singer got deeper and deeper and if you over wound it......you got the Chipmunks:laughing:

I've still got twin cassette players on an old Panasonic radio/cassette player that I use in my workshop, it's about 30 years old. I've got a Boy George tape as well as Wet, Wet, Wet and Dionne Warwick and they still sound good to this day(y)

But more recently, I was given a DAB digital radio for the kitchen.......I wasn't too happy about that because I can't play my cds on it. I can play the cassettes in the workshop, but not cds anymore.......not happy about that(n)
My daughter was surprised that I still wanted to play cds:(

There's a hole in me bucket, dear Lisa, dear Lisa!!! Remember it well but played on a Dancett record player...

I can remember the Dansette as well.......I used to stack several singles on my parents' turntable (it was a Garrard). You could put the singles on and each one would drop down after playing, but after two or three had played they would start to slide and the needle would slow down. Back again to everyone having deep voices......even the female singers:laughing:

Bill's just pulled out an old ITT Colt radio with LM, FM and MW and a directional built-in aerial on top:BigGrin:

That brings back happy memories of listening to Ed "Stew Pot" Stewart on the radio(y) I think he was on Saturday mornings ......

Does anyone remember this from Ed Stewart's request programme in the late 60's? There was always someone who would ask for it to be played......showing my age now I think:LOL:

Shame about all the background noise....

Just one more memory whilst we are on this track.....get it?!! Dad hated pop music, said it would not be remembered in a year!!. This was at the time The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Dave, Dee, Dozy etc, Moody Blues, Troggs, Manfred Mann, Gerry &the pacemakers and all those other wonderful groups were making their music, Anyway, I was banished from the house to the little 10ft Sprite caravan in the garden when I wanted to listen to them. I even nicked my Grannies hearing aid ear pieces (chunky things) and wired them to the old gramophone that I had set up in the van so that I was not banished from the van as well!!. Good days. !!! :roflmto:
