We're heading off to Norway in May from the UK in our motorhome, under 3500kg. We plan to use the ferries up the West Coast, so I'm interested in getting the 50% discount for prepayment.

There is an older thread about Tags and Ferry payments here which is very helpful. https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/foru...-tag-for-norway-update-22nd-june-2022.265511/

However, in trying to register for AutoPASS for ferries (and at least one of the Tags) at https://minside.autopassferje.no/registrer?lang=en I encounter a problem with it accepting my mobile phone number (one of the first steps). It does not seem to accept UK (or GB) phone numbers with prefix 44. See screen shot below.

Q: Is anybody else having this problem and have they found a solution?

I've sent an email to them, but may have to resort to a phone call.

Thanks in Advance.

That's another option, but I don't think you get any discount with that. Having said that, some of the ferries are now free anyway, so I don't know how much saving in total there will be. Fortunately I think I'm close to getting it sorted now so I'll drive on to each ferry and it will charge automatically (with a discount) or not charge at all!

It's a prepayment for the ferries, and not for the Tag. The Tag has to be bought through a seperate company (Flyt, Skytel etc) and you register your vehicle, with its number plate, with that company. Then you tell Autopass the Tag details and they link it to your Autopass account.

However, I'm pretty sure that the ferry operators don't use the tag, but use the number plate instead to identify your vehicle. You still need a Tag Account linked to Autopass for this to work (hope that makes sense!)

When I went through that process they invoiced me for 2000 Kronas as a prepayment. If you pay it you get a 50% discount on many ferries. If you don't pay it the discount is 10%. The ferry charges are deducted from the prepayment. When your balance gets low they will invoice you for another 2000 Kronas, but only when your balance falls below zero do you revert to the 10% discount.

We paid the prepayment and received the 50% discount. On the Bodo to Moskenes ferry it saved us about £50 for example. Our balance ran low, but not below zero, so I didn't pay the next 2000 Kronas and will be able to reclaim a small amount of money back.

We've just registered for our Autopass for Ferries account as we're off to Norway next month.

There is a problem with their registration website that means UK phone numbers are not recognised. I messaged them and they completed the registration process for me. They then issued a PDF invoice for 2000 NOK for the prepayment for the 50% discount. The invoice contains their international account BIC and SWIFT details which meant that I could pay by international money transfer. Using a Starling card I got a decent exchange rate, but had to pay about £6 for the cost of the international transfer. The 2000 NOK appeared in my Autopass for Ferries account about 2 days later.

You need to have already created an ordinary Autopass account first for reduced road tolls.

Hope this helps. Incidentally, I created the standard Autopass account about 6 weeks ago, but as of last Saturday (when I set off for Glastonbury) the electronic tag still hadn't arrived. I've messaged them and they say it can take up to 8 weeks, but not to worry as they can use the number plate that I've registered to get the discount. Hopefully it's waiting on my door mat when I get home next Monday, but if not hopefully all will be well anyway.

We are in the Lofotens at the moment, having come all the way up from Kristiansand, and I can tell you that the ferry staff have an app that links your number plate to your ferry account (autopassferje), and they go round the vehicles as though taking photos, but in fact their app does a scan.

We must have been on about 25 ferries now. You get a daily receipt by email for ferries you have taken the previous day, by email, and you can keep tabs on your account through the autopassferje website.

The amounts for ferries are mostly small. As someone has mentioned, it's 600 Kr (£45) for Bodo to Moskenes at the 50% rate, and many other ferries have been 30 - 40 Kr, although one was 110 Kr.

Sometimes the ferries are not that frequent, so it's handy to have the following page on your phone/tablet so you can plan journeys:

Also, on google maps, if you zoom in on a ferry pier, you will get a symbol of a ferry, with the words like '(name of pier) ferjekai'. Click on this, and you should get a list of current departures. Be sure to check destination, because some piers serve a number of routes.

Finally, the only problem I initially had was that there is a number 1 in my number plate. Of course on UK plates it appears as an I, and their app is looking for the European 1 - it confuses their app. My solution was a small shaped piece of black electrical tape to make my I into a 1. It worked a treat.

Hope this helps. Happy to answer any questions/issues.

We're just back home after using about 20 ferries on a similar route to you. As you described, that's how it appears to work - they scan the number plates and the tags aren't used. Sometimes they couldn't find our account. We worked out that they needed to search for a 'United Kingdom' registration number (not GB or England), so if they were having a problem finding us we told them that and then it all seemed to work fine.
