Nordic travel plans August / September 2017

I hope the Lofotens (especially the end bit Å and Reine) are less busy than when we were there so you can get a chance for a good look around.
I spent nearly two hours last night looking at Lofoton islands on google maps, I know you are going there, are you going all the way to the end..?

Love the pictures and always look up where you are....(y) if your going all the way along Lofoton you are in for a real treat, stunning scenery...

We've now made it a must do next year....:D

It is best when on Lofoten to take a tour around all the minor roads, many give a circular route, if not you miss the best bits and the main road across is similar to all the other 'ooos kms you'vs driven to get there...

We did that and also cycled some circuits around headlands but you've got to see the recommended bits, haven't you :).

The Lofotens aren't really big enough to miss anything if you meander around for a few days...the bigger the meanders the better..(y)(y) especially if you are going one way and taking the ferry back to Bodo..

Not exactly cracking the flags weather, but given how far north we are the next 10 days are looking amazing :)(y)

Really enjoying your trip. Fingers crossed you get to see them .
( I'm not liking the beard . Does your Bev like it ? Ralph grows one for Goth weekend. Ok to look at GROSS to kiss. )
The northern lights are on Ralph's list of must sees. We've been told on a trip up to Tan Hill , by someone that's seen and photographed the lights many times , that what you see through the lenses isn't what you see by the eye. Often you can't make them out unless you know what to look for . This same bloke said best time to see them over there is December / January ?
The northern lights were actually out one night when we were up at Tan Hill. But we were in the old motorhome crashed out ! Early doors drinking ...........
Thing is we tend to be in bed by 10pm haha . So if doing a trip to view them . We'd have to have late nights , sleep ins , to get our body clock in tune.

Wow, just had a look, there really is a place called A, I`m amazed though at the thought it was busy !

A ferry comes into there and all the bus trips go there so if you're unlucky enough to hit rush hour then .........

Morning Bev. I don't think the beard (more like scruffy stubble) has many days left . My Bev is actually encouraging it but eldest daughter has spotted it on FB and says it has to go

We have met people who say they have seen them like we see on TV but I worry that if they have paid a lotvforvavtrip they could convince themselves.

Clear nights coming up for a few days so will be keeping an eye out up to midnight at least we are not brilliant after then ourselves. A & R join us tomorrow they have seen them in Alaska at this time of year so there is hope :)(y)

Morning David.
Fingers and everything else crossed for you . Keep on reporting and posting the pics . It looks lovely over there. We can't believe how far you've driven in such a short time !

We are in Bayeux at the moment and it is throwing it down, moving down to Twin Lakes on Tuesday.

not got far yet, we did know the E6 just about the only road running north to south in Norway has a ferry on the run to Narvik, didn't factor in a 2 hour delay, only missed one by 15 minutes then had to wait 2 hours, Sunday lunch I reckon. But at least only 450 NK £45, I did get a bit worried when he paced the length of the car and boat in front of us, but asked length decided to be nearly honest and declared 7.9m knowing they go in 1m bands so 7m - 8m

We had spotted a route for lorries to Narvik which bypasses this ferry but then has a longer ferry crossing, thought we would have no lorries on with us so were surprised when a pig lorry pulled alongside, but not as surprised as he was when the Lofoten ferry pulled up 200m away he had to extricate himself from the queue o_O:) (it's not just me(y))

A few scenery shots, but the camera really does lie, in that you really do not get the size and a coin isn't going to help much

the ferry above brought Judith and Martin off the Lofoten Isles, some of above photos are sort of our first sight of them, I think technically they are only the few islands at the end of the archipelago, but for now I am lumping them all together (y) till @moulin 87 gets too cross at least :)

we are still only half way through todays journey, the scenery just keeps getting bigger and better, not quite the sunny day predicted but 18C and definitely still shorts weather :)(y)

pretty much midge free, we have seen a few but not bothered us at all, killed a couple of evil looking bitey thingies though, but neither of us have been bitten (y)

have a great time at Twin Lakes (y)

Well your foot looks very brown;)

Is it really so empty up there????

amazingly so, the E6 is the only road to speak of and even with a 2 hour wait there were only 50 vehicles waiting, overnight when parked alongside it you hardly see another vehicle

hoping it is all quiet on the Lofoten when we get there :)(y)

For the avoidance of doubt I attach a useful map :rolleyes:

http://www.nasjonaleturistveger.no/en/routes/andøya

Now click on map and open the PDF..

The red route in the middle is the tourist/scenic route to the NorthernLights/Space Centre... The red route on the bottom left shows the START of the Lofoten Islands, the red route on the top right was the scenic route on Senja which knocked Lofoten into a cocked hat..(n)(n) Unfortunately the ferry across has stopped now for the winter...You can still drive around, you'll have the time.. Far quieter and the scenery more dynamic...

About the only thing I regret about our trip is not taking your advice to go to Senja. Too late now and we'll probably never go so far north again.

We are loosely considering, sometime in the future, coming to this southern part for a month or so and exploring more deeply.

Now David you know how keen we get when on the hunt, I proberly would have been up there too.... but not sure if a rescue team would be needed to get me down lolol at least Lola is there for a soft landing

Looks like you are having a fab trip , this is one that John would love to do too

Enjoy the rest of your trip , keep the photos coming and did Bev find it?

Yes thanks Kath, we could see it from the ground, to make it more fun Bev also dropped the pencil, tried throwing it up a couple of times, Bev missed it but where it landed everything on the ground looked like a wooden pencil o_Oo_O

In the end I climbed up a little bit and put it in her sock top :)(y)

I reckon she might qualify for the oldest finder, but her frown told me not to continue that thought (I think it was a frown, not much before it becomes a glare )

Hope to see you both soon

Evening Martin, yes and yes, really bad but to be honest not much worse than other places we had to circumnavigate, dont' think we have much choice coming back down from Denmark but are looking at going more through Holland coming home, all the roads south of Hamburg going south looked awful, but that was 2 weeks ago and still holidays (y)

We are more or less on the islands now, near the airport at Evenes, arrived about 7, cooked chilli which we ate with cheesy tortilla chips called nachips here, we baked them covered with grated cheese :):) on that theme still on first cylinder of gas, done 15 meals now and all coffee water (y)(y)

What a gem, another private 'aire' 10 places all hard standing all with electrics but option to refuse 170 / 200 NK, £17 / 20

a few more of the second half of the journey and the site

Phew - at least you can now say (and just about prove ;)) you've seen "The Lights".

Hopefully you'll see more & better displays in the coming days (nights)

As for photography, am I wrong in thinking you need a tripod for long exposures?
I've also heard something of a technique called 'stacking', multiple exposures reassembled in a laptop. In fact I think my Panasonic Bridge Camera has a similar feature.
You probably already know about it, so apologies .

Reading up about my camera, it does have several handheld night shot modes, using multiple shots (x10)...
I think your camera is a proper DLSR, so probably has even more options and/or scene modes.
Good luck
( ...but watching the lights is more important than pictures, eh ;) ).
