New Zealand or Bust

Great to meet The Funflairs , shows what a great forum this is ! 💡👍
Likewise👍 just got back to the shed, we ate in Oxleys Picton, green lipped mussels in coconut and lime, might sound wrong but they were lovely,

I don’t usually photograph food but she insisted, told you we could lower the tone of the place😏

Jen had fish and chips 😀

I had fish of the day, red snapper (I think we spotted it earlier from the kayak)

The red wine was nice Madam Sass Pint Noir👍

Speaking of kayaks we had a nice trip on Queen Charlotte Sound didn’t see as much wildlife as we hoped for and as they had seen the day before but isn’t that always the case, we saw quite a few sting rays and lots of jellyfish and starfish, did you know starfish can reproduce either by normal means or by shedding body parts primarily legs which will then grow into new starfish🤔

We actually got wetter walking down to the start at 8 am than we did in the kayaks,

We have had the blue cod a couple of time, and it knocks the cod we have at home into a cocked hat. I love whitebait at home, but not to sure that I have warmed to the whitebait fritters over here yet.

The one I had was disgusting...
Yes, Kiwis are obsessed with whitebait. It’s like caviar is to the Russians. But the way they cook it is so unimaginative. They make fritters, just fritters.
Those who go fishing for whitebait take it very seriously and have their regular, but unofficial,“spots” on the riverbank. There was one season when a whitebaiter was shot for poaching another whitebaiters “spot”.
I have never enjoyed the whitebait here, but I do like the way the British cook it.

Returning from a boat trip on Charlotte Sound after visiting Captain Cook’s Ships Bay , incredible history . Boro boy done good . He is my all time hero .
He doesn’t win many popularity stakes out here though😏

ps you will enjoy the drive to Nelson, we are actually 10 miles past Nelson in the middle of nowhere by the beach👍

We had the Spanish version in Cadiz last year made with shrimps but the secret there is the best ones are the ones you can see through , gorgeous.

The kiwi tour guide on the Island gushed and enthused about him and saw him as a great man . An explorer with a human touch .

If you get to Invercargill, the Bill Richardson Transport World is a must. Trucks, cars, toys, tea towels (better than you think!), engines, jukeboxes, fuel pumps, etc., etc.! You can spend hours here. It makes the UK National Motor Museum seem tiny. Allow several hours!

I second that recommendation. It is world class. I laughed at you mentioning the tea towels because I have sold several to the museum over the years.
Also, be sure to have a Southland Roll in the museum café. They came top of my survey of Southland Rolls a few years ago. A Southland Roll is basically a cheese toastie that's more like a rolled-up Welsh rarebit.

We spent 5 hours in there on Saturday and we could have spent longer. A fabulous museum 👍

Could be worse😏 even “the shed” was a nice drive over, olive oil anywhere that could squeak seems to have helped👍 😃

Rabbit Island? Watch out for the box jellyfish. I was told they were out in their numbers last week and they can give you a very painful sting.

So, some are waiting, what is Hoki?
Hoki, also known as blue grenadier, is a popular Australian and New Zealand white fish (similar to hake) that is generally sold in fillets, but is also used in processed fish such as MacDonald's Filet-o-fish and fishfingers.
It's one of New Zealand's biggest fish exports.
Hoki is not to be confused with Hokey Pokey. The latter is the best (in my opinion) ice cream in the world and rarely, if ever, found outside of New Zealand. It's vanilla ice cream with bits of honeycomb toffee and sold at most dairies (corner shops) as a soft scoop ice cream that's put into a cone by the shopkeeper. Delicious. You mustn't leave New Zealand without trying a single scoop Hokey Pokey.
Second favourite ice cream would be Boysenberry, also available as soft scoop.

Anyone got any recommendations for fishing charters in Nelson ? Fancy a day out .

Is that what it's called... ?
Wasn't impressed by that either [despite it being hyped by our guide] - although infinitely better than the weird Whitebait Fritter [which was btw, served with mint sauce as an accompaniment]
