New dover road Park & Ride Canterbury

We were a bit worried first time we used it but it was great - loads of space. Will definitely use again

Thread bump, we’re thinking of using Saturday evening for Dover crossing on Sunday. How busy does it get at weekends though as concerned about arriving and it’s full!
Even before covid never seen it full. There is a small fenced area by the gates and water/ dump etc that holds approximately 20 vans, then the overflow across the entrance road must hold sixty vans and if that were full im sure you could park out of the way in the main carpark which is massive. I wouldn’t worry about not getting on there.

I live in Hythe. Only ever use the P&R when going to the Marlowe. And only for matinees as the buses stop too early for evening performances!

It might get busier on the car side as Canterbury CC in their infinite wisdom are closing the P&R in Sturry Road and it means that there will be more pressure on Dover Road. No one wants to travel from east Kent to the other one at Wincheap.

Amazingly to coincide with that madness they are upping parking charges on all the other council owned parking.
You can use any bus from the terminal to go back just show your parking ticket

We used it Easter weekend, it was nowhere near full. 👍

That's useful, was the barrier open 24/7 still?
Yes, you drive up, take a ticket and then pay before you go. The ticket gets you on the bus for free.

There is 24 hour access and egress. We had a mare on the M25 and got stuck for hours so turned up at 22.45, no problem. 👍

Another bump thinking of using here but would be arriving around 04.00 worried about disturbing others and being able to get on ok.
A great facility!
Someone having a speed awareness course necessitates an overnight drive

The P&R? MHs come & go all hours of the day & night.

Thanks scousebird , shall try to get some sleep now, its going to be a weird 24 hours.

Having been woken in the very small hours recently on an Aire, I would say you need to be in stealth mode when you arrive or park up in a lay-by and wait to a more socially acceptable time to arrive.

Personally, I never mind people coming and going.

It’s the ones who start their engines and leave them running while they faff with blinds, finish their cuppa etc. Or the ones who arrive and decide they need to level it or take 3 goes to park.

If you are going to arrive late or leave early, glide in and switch off once, or get everything ready, turn the engine on and drive. 😂

We used the P&R for the first time last night, plenty of room when we arrived at 11:30pm. Went throw barrier and quietly found a space, engine off and in bed 5 minutes later. I did hear another van coming in after midnight but they were very quiet and parked up and engine off in seconds, we left at 6 am this morning trying not to be noisy.

If you arrive late, it might be preferable to use the bigger overflow area on the right. More space, so might cause less disturbance than parking right next to another MH in the main area on the left?

We were there a couple of weeks and that car park was full even had 8 vans in main car park against the trees opposite the entrance.
soon there will be more motorhomes than cars

Thanks scousebird and all I have boobed, what I get for looking in the early hours.
We are actually going from Newhaven to Dieppe 🤣 late afternoon ferry, but think you can park at the terminal once the previous ferry has gone. So now looking for somewhere about 2/3 of the way between hull and Newhaven.

Are you saying that the overflow parking, at the back of the main car park(turn right after the barrier and some bushes) was full? I think it could take 50-70 MHs?

You probably could have got a couple more in but thats it
it’s not an overflow parking any more there is normally more in there than the original

do you mean the large moho parking area to the right when you go through the barrier was full, or is now only for cars ?

I mean it seems to be a motorhome parking area now as there are nowhere near as many cars using the P&R now that there used to be.

ah.. ok I misunderstood your post ..
makes sense now, the spaces are car sized .. as seen in the photo, and explains why some motorhomes are over the lines ..

If I remember right there were 18 vans in the main carpark along the 2 rows nearest the trees at the bottom corner op the photo

We overnighted there on wed night, counted 50+ vans, parked in all 3 areas including the main car parking area.
