New Brittany Ferries Ship-Santona

They parked us so close to a barrier that we couldn’t open the locker door to switch on the gas :-)

What is there to do on board for a 11.30pm sailing? Will bars etc be open or does everyone just retire to their rooms?

I'm on the salamanca, does it have a cinema? I'm hoping to watch Napoleon.

We were also on the Santona last night. Totally different experience. One of the last to get on - after long wait cos we wanted to arrive in Portsmouth before dark….But were in the first five or so to get off in Santander. Also ate in the Azul restaurant…..excellent food and prompt service (and Michael won’t put up with anything less) ….very low complaint threshold. The whole trip was great - met several Funsters and had a laugh in the bar. Agree with the location of restaurant at the front being susceptible to choppy seas. Also had breakfast. Just wish they’d offer fried eggs as well as scrambled. All in all, well done to Brittany Ferries.
Glad your experience of the food was better than ours that morning and evening.
We ate at about 9am for breakfast and at €18 we hoped for hot breakfast unfortunately not. Sue’s evening meal , about 9 pm was over done (stifado)and I would say that about 60 % around us either got it after a long time ordering or sent it back.
The guy behind us sent his fish back twice, once because it was over done and the second time because the chef sent him a pice of bream instead of halibut.
Our experience

We used the Galicia in October and were very disappointed with the food, very expensive and poor quality. Looked this year and the ferry crossings from Portsmouth to Spain seem to have gone up about £200 , a return cabin at the end of May was £182, crazy and the ferries are much slower
Would be great if another company was in competition with Brittany Ferries on the UK - Spain routes

Been done before and they couldn’t return a big enough profit.

BF only sailed around March to October back then.

There was P&O with Pride of Bilbao at around 36 hours.

Then came trans med I think it was. For a short period.

I think we will use the Spanish routes by car. But no longer in the motorhome

It’s interesting how different people can have different experiences at the same place. It’s no excuse but I’m thinking that they leave the food out under those hot lamps rather than the food being freshly cooked. We ate early so ours was ok.

I'm pondering Andalusia this year and considering, as I'm only 10-15 mins away, using BF to Spain on the way out to cut the mileage down a bit. From this thread it seems both price and catering would suggest that I stick to the Dieppe crossing and perhaps spend a few bob on tolls instead. What are Funsters views?

We were also planning heading south but to the Algarve in late February and returning sometime in April so had a look at all the options. Due to other commitments our starting point will be from London, although being Westcountry based, our preference for Plymouth is out for sailings in February anyway.

Looking at all options, timing and costs we’ve settled on BF Portsmouth to St Malo going out and Santander to Plymouth coming back. Both are overnight sailings on the Pont Aven, which although she’s getting on a bit now, we are happy with.

I agree, the heat lamps do food no favours.

If time is not an issue I would do Dieppe.

Is Dieppe any cheaper than the tunnel?
I guess there is not much distance between the two?

It certainly was for us, but you need to input your own dates and details for a valid comparison - not forgetting that there’s an extra 20% discount for over 60s from DFDS when booking by phone.

Yes We paid 1st Dec coming out with tunnel £285 .Coming back February 24 . £65 from Dieppe to Newhaven

We were on it Thursday 1/2 HR late moving off 12pm. Put the luggage in the room, straight to the bar and had a few pints. The bar was busy and open for around an hour. Had breakfast but should have had it in the main restaurant for 18euros as you also get a help yourself continental as well as a cooked breakfast. Which you could share as they only take the ticket at the breakfast station for the cooked breakfast. The evening meal is good value considering you are limited to where you eat.
Also the bar exchange rate was 1.16 to the pound making beer morreti cheaper than my local pub.

In the rooms you have videos on demand.
