New Brittany Ferries Ship-Santona

Just watch out for the internet charges. The cost of marine internet is eye watering and is automatically added to your phone bill. We always leave the phone in airplane mode - public WiFi is usually extremely slow.

Yes I put phone in airplane mode They give you 90 minutes free which was enough for me, browsing speed was good.

Has anyone tried the commodore cabins on Santona? Wondering if it's worth the extra.

We are on Santona on Monday... my real gripe if it has an identical layout to Galacia is the siting of the main restaurant up forward in the ship... extremely poor place to site it if there is any sea swell at all..

We had one on The Salamanca and it was fantastic , even a door out onto the deck .
We are driving down to Spain in September and returning by ferry , got the posh lounge booked and a Commodore suite.

Thanks for that information Greenway That sounds good, apart from the food. We’ve booked an inside cabin too in case it was a rough crossing, more stable and no rough sees to look out the window at 😜 Surprised it has a TV, but there is free video on demand throughout the ship on our own devices in any case and it says 90 minutes free wifi too. Was there access to drinking water readily available or was the cabin tap water palatable. Just finished the packing so we’re ready for the morning. Whatever happens we will not be at home 😊

I like the look of your sheepskin seat covers. Can I ask where you got them?

Thanks for all of these reviews. We travel to Santander on Friday’s crossing. Can I ask whether there are microwaves located near the bar - like there was on Pont Aven & Galicia? We are thinking of taking onboard a microwave ready meal. Thanks

No, they are not. Only 3. One starboard, one port side one is in the middle.

See my review on Galicia (Sister vessel).
Ours was starboard and was bloody lovely, no more cattle class for me ever again 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Fairly good news about the Santona. We are off to Spain on board said ship, then Portugal and back through Spain, May - June. As an ex chef, there is nothing more frustrating than customers who DO NOT complain. Whether it's about the quality, quantity or like an earlier Funster, the lack of heat in the food. If there is anything at all that is, in your opinion, wrong with the food, at least give the caterers the opportunity to correct the issue, by reporting the issue there and then. There are catering businesses in the UK going to the wall because of the "cost of living crisis", fuel bills, etc etc...the last thing they need on top of all this, is the lack of footfall. As a card I used to put out on the restaurant tables read, If you have enjoyed your meal, tell others, if not, tell me.

Like your culinary attitude, good to hear but it does not apply to mass catering , I had a pork chop on board ship and it couldn’t of been any drier if it had been desiccated on purpose , as I said the food was ghastly and everybody knew it , passengers , waiting on staff and the cooks .
The contrast with pre Covid was universes apart .

Came back on it on Tuesday Cost £1487.00 return for my tag axle and an inside cabin, Had 2 evening meals in the cafe and two full english next morning, Spent just over £100.00 with a few beers. just felt ripped off. £8.52 pint murphys and an orange juice.

EuroTrotters PaddyM I would be interested to know how much extra these cabins are for the Portsmouth to Santander crossing. I can only see it in their website if I go through the booking procedures. We are looking to travel in November this year. Thanks

Sorry for the bold type, defaulted to this and I couldn’t change it!!!

First off the ship this morning and no checks other than passport so on the motorway by 0815.

To answer the above questions, Garry - June yes the restaurant is at the bow. helzie2020 The sheepskins are doubles we bought from Dunelm and they are slightly long but cover the integral headrest and tuck into the slider bar if the can air at the bottom.

I haven't been on the ship myself yet but the BF website says there is a microwave. Oddly the statement is listed under information about cots on board (presumably as parents will be interested in facilities to heat up baby food & milk). Anyway, this is what it says:

Cot in cabin on Santoña

Suitable for infants up to the age of 24 months.

Travelling with a baby can be stressful but with Brittany Ferries your holiday begins onboard. Not only can you pack everything you need but you can also pre-book a cot (suitable for infants up to 24 months) which will be made up and waiting for you in your cabin. In addition, we provide changing areas and microwaves on our ships.

Thanks, that’s a great piece of news

I think we paid £265 for the cabin. But we booked early, as soon as schedules were released.

They can cost a lot more. Especially in high season.

Microwave is in the main restaurant behind the cash desk, so only accessable during opening times

Microwave on Pont Aven, CapFinistere and Galicia used to be alongside the main lounge bar.

We sailed on it 08-09/03 Santander - Portsmouth. Standard BF and quite nice but the crew need a lot more practice at loading, parking and unloading the ship. They were late leaving Spain and took forever to get us off in Portsmouth. It also did not help as UK Passport Control were understaffed, working to rule and with only four desks open it took ages to get out of the port.

Just had another trip on the Santona - Portsmouth to Santander. Virtually last to board, after queuing for 3 hours. We had a club cabin with “free” access to the Cclub lounge where we stayed for the duration (apart from sleeping). Once again, virtually non-stop food and wine available :)

We had dinner in the posh restaurant. This was very poor. Food served an hour late, was cold, and poor quality. The 10% apology was scarcely sufficient recompense for the disappointment. Another time we would just continue to graze in the club lounge.

Final insult was the shambles at Santander. We were the very last vehicle to get off the boat after sitting in the van for 90 minutes. By then the port was choc-a-bloc with trucks heading for the boat which added to the delay. But we are on holiday so who cares?

PS The crossing was fine, moderate “turbulence” in places.

After reading through this thread I’m slightly glad that we’re on the old Pont Aven for our spring crossing in late February (Portsmouth/St Malo) and April (Santander/Plymouth)! It’s knocking on but I quite like her after all these years travelling those routes.

We like it. But it’s tired. Needs a full refurb.

Always try to book Plymouth Santander on Pont Aven now.

Don’t like the CCS Sisters on lease from Stena RoRo.

We were also on the Santona last night. Totally different experience. One of the last to get on - after long wait cos we wanted to arrive in Portsmouth before dark….But were in the first five or so to get off in Santander. Also ate in the Azul restaurant…..excellent food and prompt service (and Michael won’t put up with anything less) ….very low complaint threshold. The whole trip was great - met several Funsters and had a laugh in the bar. Agree with the location of restaurant at the front being susceptible to choppy seas. Also had breakfast. Just wish they’d offer fried eggs as well as scrambled. All in all, well done to Brittany Ferries.

Monday 6th, 1720. On Santona, just docking at Portsmouth now. Calm crossing from Santander. The rack of lamb was hardly cooked, couldn't finish it.
how did you get a free meal in the Azul restaurant, I thought that BF stopped that?

It's even more annoying when you sit there thinking "I could be home with the kettle on by now"
