Never been to Germany

Consider Harwich to Hook of Holland. For us the extra cost is offset by savings at Dartford Crossing, fewer miles and that wonderful start to a holiday which we get from a sea cruise.

We're in Germany at the moment and love it. We've been twice before and, like Flairy, we spend our time on stellplatz or similar. We never stay on sites unless we absolutely have to.

At the moment we're staying on a beautiful stop on the outskirts of a forest high up with views over fantastic countryside. The cost of our stay is 5 euros per night with EHU! There are fantastic walks through the forest and bike trails going further afield. What's more there's only us and one other vehicle, which is pretty standard for this time of year.

Only really been in southern Germany. Another vote for Belchenblick in the Black Forest. Also used Kirchzarten which is a few miles away from Freiburg. Both very (very) friendly and Kirchzarten has the most brilliant swimming pool you will find anywhere.

My suggestion if you want to see Schloss Neuschwanstein (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang castle) is to stay just over the border in Heiterwangersee in the Austrian Tirol. Expect ridiculous traffic and queues of mostly Germans, to see the castle. Very UnGermanic lack of any traffic management!

I have put reports of 2 trips in the resources section with Camper Contact numbers of the places we stayed.

Mine is to arrive at 5pm to empty carparks and no coach parties. Overnight at Fussen.

Could you please post the coordinates for this for this stop we are going to do a 8 week tour of Germany next year

Or go very early in the Morning before the coaches arrive, plenty of parking then either walk up to the Castle or take the horse cart and walk back down.
Yes, we did that at both Lake Konigsee and Lake Chimensie, getting the first boat off the dock.

Years ago someone told me to do the Moselle..
Advise was, Cross at Calais, through Belgium, into Luxembourg for cheap fuel, fags and booze (if its of interest) then get to TRIER.
Once at Trier there is a large aire, nice town and the tourist information is by an old Roman gateway.
You can pick up a map for the river and they show the stopover places along the river.... Done the trip twice and would recomend to anyone.

Last trip we added in a visit to Ypres to see the ceremony at the Menin gate, a worthwile experience.
Also fell over this place. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strépy-Thieu_boat_lift..
Motorhomes stay over on a quay side just a 10 min walk away, No services but free.

Many funsters head that way in September and meet ups along the way are common.
My usual route and always include Luxembourg for cheap spirits. Heres a blog including Belgium,a bit of Holland then across to the Rhine down to the Mosel into Luxembourg and then back through Belgium .

Been going to Germany for 50 years now. Always underwhelmed by the Black Forest. There are far better places, down in the Alps or up in the north near the old Iron Curtain. The area around Hamlyn (and Hamlyn itself) for instance is really beautiful, full of villages with buildings 5+ hundred years old. Consider going further east, say to places like Colditz.

There is quite a short, but interesting, piece in today’s Times Travel section.

We we t yonks ago via denmark. Went from harwich to espburg ?. Not sure that ferry still runs. Only stayed a couple of days, close to broken, great camp site, got bus into town, it stopped outside the camp site. Did not really know what to expect in broken, but it was a great little city, with bags of history. And all the people look like us, and a lot speak English, unlike a lot of French who look Mediterranean. We are looking to go again sometime, roads are good as well.

We have been many times to Germany, prefer it to France.

Best route in is the overnight Harwich (or Hull) ferry to Hook of Holland.
It means you can pootle to the port at your own pace, get a meal in town, and then get on the ferry at 10pm, good cabins, and get off the boat at 7.30am. You can make the German border in time for a late breakfast, and with two drivers you could make Berlin by the evening if you needed to.

Romantischestrasse southbound then pick up the Alpenstrasse westbound (bit of backtracking). Then a casual amble north through the Black Forest. We did this a few years ago.

There's enough to see and do to take your time - I think we did 3 weeks. It's in one of our Blogs (link in signature)

Did Titisee and Friedrichshafen a couple of years ago. The Zeppelin museum is interesting. Rhinefalls is spectacular but do not overnight in the car park unless you have very deep pockets.

Got told off in a German town, can’t remember which, for crossing an EMPTY road while pedestrian crossing was on red!!

Surely that's the law here too in UK.

I have never been to Germany ,Dee has, Andrew Ditton did a recent series of utube vids and he makes parts of Germany look really good, so, whats the pros and cons of touring and where are the most scenic places to visit? We are interested in old towns, wildlife, photogenic views and the occasional meal with bottle. I live in West Yorkshire so do I leave UK from Hull or do the Chunnel? Thanks in anticipation
I have only read your first post and others may have already recommended the Romantic Valley & the Romantic road. Ferrnom!

We have been to Germany several times, but with a caravan. Last time probably 8 years ago. Living in Gtr Manchester at the time, always used Hull crossing, and could get to Osnabruk by mid afternoon. We found west germany a little more "kempt" whereas east germany reminded us more of France, with family farms side on to the road.
We were staying in camp sites and never had any problems, found some quite interesting sites - like the one near Magdeburg that had clearly been an old East German holiday camp next to a lake.
Found west german motorways pretty terrible - awful road surface, but east german ones were good. May have all changes, but you can be going down a fairly main road in east german, and suddenly you are on cobbles!
Get a couple of guide books out of the library and see what you might like to see.
Lots of good places. We went to Berlin & Potsdam. Hartz Mountains. Bit of the Black Forest. Generally meandered. But it is a big place.
We were in Germany last year, try going down the Rhine Valley. We have used Boppard, south of Koblenz. Just North of Boppard is a site right next to the main B route “Sonneneck” which has pitches right next to the river and a very large swimming pool. There are cycling paths and footpaths and from Boppard you can do a day cruise down the Rhine and back taking you to just north of Mainz. We personally prefer Germany to France as it is so well set up for parking even in public car parks with dedicated spaces on occasions

Bremen not broken this predictive text stuff.

A side thought. Where is your spirit of adventure? Last year we booked sites in the Rhine valley including one near Mainz which we will not be going to again as it was very poorly laid out, not very clean so we moved on and hit on Hemsbach, north of Heidelberg which we gave up on as it is a long way from the site we wish to use to the town centre. That in Hemsbach is small but next to a lake very swimmable and in the town with he largest children’s play area we have ever come across. Like most German sites there are lots of statics based on tourers retired from the road but the facilities are good and the town has all that you would want for eating, drinking, etc. The mani road running through is a wine route and has lots of towns worth visiting just by popping in. We also went a bit off the route to Michaelstadt with a an excellent parking area for cars and dedicated motorhome pitches. The town is stuffed full of old buildings all of this we discovered by just going there and looking. At each of us at 79 and having lived in Africa (Zambia and Ghana) we are not averse to just going looking. Or first tugging experience was from what was then called Salisbury to Beira in Mozambique for our two young children to enjoy the seaside but that is another longish story!

PhilandMena has beaten me to it but I was gonna put similar pictures up as we’ve done all those, been Germany once or twice a year on the Harley since 2002 and 2018/19 in the moho.
Germany really is a fantastic place to tour, the castle route and romantic route are especially nice but busy, Lindau is nice for a day/night, and don’t forget the alpenStraße with Berchtesgaden (Hitlers Nest) is a must see as well as the fairytale castles. We can’t wait to get back to Germany in December👍

I love that Top Platz website, I'd never heard of it before.

If spectacular fireworks are of interest then look here https://www.rhein-in-flammen.com/

or if steam railways are your thing try this https://www.hsb-wr.de/

or in the unlikely case of being an enthusiast of very early Volkswagen vehicles and you are going to be in Germany in June 2022 then call in here <Broken link removed> . There will be plenty of Brits there!
