NEC show on Channel 5 this week

Really enjoyed the show as a piece of TV entertainment , Rufus Hound is a talented actor / presenter and his co presenter obviously was knowledgeable and engaging .
This was NOT the Motorhome show , it was a show reflecting a diverse pastime which is exactly what you will find if you go to the NEC show .

Some motorhomers on here need to realise that there is a big bright world out there that isn’t about MPG and freeloading on foreign aires or slagging off British built motorhomes and that our pastime is about FUN in all its guises .

I must have been in a parallel universe the program was billed “Today and the Caravan show” which gave quite disappointing coverage

Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but in case not, a heads-up:

Wednesday 23 February - 8 pm, Channel 5 - Today at the Caravan Show - Part one of two. Highlights from the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show at the NEC Birmingham

Testing a small and impressive caravan, and learning how to make the most of a confined kitchen. Heading to the Spanish countryside to see if an expensive motorhome can handle the rough terrain.

Thursday 24 February - 8 pm, Channel 5 - Today at the Caravan Show - Part two of two. How a luxurious caravan is constructed
Torn between the Carthargo on the 6 Wheel Mercedes’ chassis with two RWD (or would you call it CWD!). 6X2

Or the Frankia with traditional twin rear wheel drive (4 wheels on one axle). 4x2

I guess the upside of the 6X2 would be stability but less grip. The 4X2 having better propulsion.

I also liked the Glawning

Interesting to see inside the expensive motor homes. Thought the interior of the Franki was much more comfortable looking than the cramped lounge of the mortelo especially as it was £100,000 more.
Did you notice the horse shit on the sole of the guys shoe when he was lying on the bed.
Seemed to be padding out programme to fill the time
The Frankia was a rear lounge so a great space but then you get a rubbish garage and the bed up the front so there are compromises, the MORELO palace was a 85L same as ours😏 if you want more space you get the 88LB as it has a bigger lounge, they are all different for sure.

It was disappointing. My take is that they recorded all the non-show bits in order to minimise the amount of "live" footage they had to script, record and edit yesterday and today. But that stopped it being what it was billed as (a show review), and they didn't put enough effort into making the pre-recorded segments relevant or useful - especially the Brighton sequence.

But it was Channel 5, who aren't noted for large budget quality documentaries :-)

You are saying that the Carthago on the Merc is Rear Wheel Drive with a tag axle, are you sure about that as I thought there was a FWD option on the Merc as well and the Carthago web site doesn't really help.

When they showed the static vans there was no mention of the yearly fees that have to be paid. I guess that would make a few splutter.
…and also the site requirements when you decide to sell - and they want ‘first-refusal’ at a stupid price…… o_O

Buyer beware for sure ;)

Usual crap we now expect from poorly thought out programmes and even worse presenters.
I guess they are just making the programme for general consumption rather than anybody who knows anything about motorhomes, I wonder if a different demographic were suitably entertained.

I wonder how many YouTube and tv people etc are actually there, seems to be loads of them

Kill me now I can’t do another one, the bloke with the airstream parked up and then they spent the rest of the time focusing on the dog and crazy golf !!!!!
Hes a journo
Yeah, I though why the hell are we watching a bloke buy dog treats in a pub 😏
Hes a journo and when i met him at a dealer a right smarmy person. Worst was the guy from the soaps he didnt mention hes sponsored by a dealer .

Surely it’s FWD?

Must be the only one who enjoyed it. 😉.

Yes it was a bit crammed but the show isn’t just about Motorhomes. They had to refer to campers, Motorhomes, tents, caravans, accessories etc, etc so squashed a lot in And gave a little taster of what’s available form the cheapest tent to the 1/4 million Motorhome.

They are never going to do an in-depth review of the vans available - it would take a month of daily programmes to do that and there are lots of YouTube vids out there for that. I’m recording tonight’s programme so I can skip the bits I don’t want to watch.

I would have to be anaesthetised to be in the same room as that style of programming..........watching a spider walk up a wall is more interesting and meaningful.

Set my machine to record, but I wonder how much will be 'Today at the Caravan Show', and how much 'let's mess about in Spain' and similar clips. I'd like to see what's actually AT the show, and not just two or three items which are then featured at length. So I'm hoping for the best. :sneaky:
It may be, again, that MH YouTubers will actually produce better videos of 'what's at the show', but we'll have to wait and see.
Well, it was better than I thought it might be! Though the guff on the super expensive, both in terms of the motorhomes and the 'static' in Dorset took more time than needed. Then again, so did the clip on blow up furniture....
I missed the last 10 minutes, which shows how gripping it, er, wasn't, but I've left my recording in place for tonight's episode!

The motorhomes were all of the super expensive end of the scale. But I think they may be looking at the 'less expensive' ones tonight?

Not seen any Motorhomes yet. Missed the first 10 minutes mind

I also found the show boring! Even when they reviewed the barbecue units prices were never mentioned similarly no prices for tents or awnings. Won’t be looking at part two!
For the awnings they said 'all of them are around the £1000 mark' - which definitely isn't true!

And it would be terribly boring watching someone opening hundreds of cupboard doors and talking about the rear end storage areas. aka garages:rolleyes:

I can't believe I actually sat and watched it for an hour without falling asleep.

It had precisely nothing to interest us but to be honest I expected that anyway, just curious to see what they did cover. However I'll accept it probably wasn't aimed at such as the existing MH fraternity, instead maybe trying to encourage interest from other population sectors. Which, frankly, IMO they failed miserably.

Total failure of a TV presentation - but it is Channel 5.........................! Another reason why we rarely watch "live" TV these days.

Part 2 is on tonight

Presenters doing the dodgy links isn't the real problem, issue is one of how to create interest when you don't have time to cover anything in any depth whatsoever. Branding the programme with only Caravan in the title itself is misleading, when we know the February NEC show covers virtually all the camping equipment segments. We know you can spend a whole day just looking at motorhomes, yet they need to cover all of the stuff in 2 programmes of about 45 minutes. It's never going to end well. All it's really able to do is whet an appetite for the various genres of kit available and perhaps maybe encourage the uninitiated or those who haven't been out and about for decades to think to think about venturing to the great outdoors. On that basis the programme probably succeeds.

I don't think funsters were ever the target viewing audience.

Were Hymer at the show? The maps said they were but I didn't see them.

Those superficial progs are just entertainment for dreamers. Much the same as progs on the London and Southampton Boat Shows.

I don't think funsters were ever the target viewing audience.

Yachtsmen/women weren't the prime target viewers of the boat show progs either.

Well I watched it last night on catch up and only really wanted the first 10 minutes but without adverts it didn't last long anyway, Julia Bradbury seemed to be the only one who knew what they were talking about.

I will still watch tonights episode though;)
