Near miss ( I am an idiot )

If you ever stop at Jim's place and you stop for fish and chips at Waldorfs.Be careful if you park outside. The parking signs are right on the edge of the pavement. I pulled away and there was a horrible crunch. Stopped.Got out .I had ripped the back marker light off.Looked at the sign i had caught it on.It had a sign telling van drivers to be aware when pulling away 🤔.Trouble is I couldn't see it.Luckily I had a replacement light.

We all make mistakes, mine was a few weeks ago left the drive away awning up in high winds which collapsed it so decided to disconnect it from the motorhome. Wound out the Fiamma awning so I could remove the cadoor strip and bang!, a sudden gust of wind caught the wind out awning and I was showered with broken aluminium castings. The hinge in one of the arms had just disintegrated with the wind, all parts ordered and I will carry out the repair myself. Top tip disconnect before it gets windy if you think it’s going to be a strong wind 50 mph.

I am with robrace on this. When a tugger I would do Mrs Poppycamper's heid in when I would walk around unit.. get into car put seat belt on and then get out and then do a other walk around......Yep paranoid PS never lost a caravan 😙🤣🤣🤣
Ours retracts as soon as the engine is started and can clearly be seen in the mirror.

Couple of near misses for us, now we always say before pulling off

'Cabin crew, cross check for departure....'

Always gives us a smile before we go, little things 😉
We have a "Pre-flight check list" taped to the sun visor to run through before departing. The trouble is - after a few years you get complacent and tend to ignore it.

Back in the mid 60's my mother walked up the local shops with my brother as a newish baby in the Silver Crest pram. As you could in them days, she left the pram with son outside the small supermarket whilst she did her shopping.
Shopping done walked home.
It was only when her neighbour said..... "you sure you haven't forgotten something?" that she belatedly realised that baby was still at the shops!
Damn I could have been an only child! Only kidding Si (he's not on here)
My late mother-in-law left my ex-wife outside the shop. Shouldn’t have gone back for her!

So have I.
There's an owner of a Relais Routier somewhere in France who's still trying to work out why there was a caravan step in the middle of their lorry park early one Monday morning.
Mine was at Chertsey C&C site till my daughter was able to collect it. They only keep them a couple of weeks; no space?!

Set off from home and driving on the A49 one car behind us seems to accelerate and get along side us with a urgent hand signal , no idea what it was . Pulled over , to my amazement I had left the double Omni Step OUT ☹️. Thank god I didn’t hurt anyone . I am an idiot . Put a bit of a dampener on things but I won’t be making that mistake ever again !!!!😞.
Got pitched up and food on now.
Nice Airstream pitched across the way from us

Did that when we first bought MoHo and weren’t so aware, got as far as home, drove up drive and took off stair on entrance pillar ☹️

Last thing I always do is walk around the van to check everything is in,closed and switched off😊
Out step has an alarm attached if the engine is started with a button on the dash to enable it to be retracted. Useful to allow me to retract if forgotten from the drivers seat with a very loud piercing alarm!

We all make mistakes. Don’t beat yourself up. Count yourself lucky and vow never to make that mistake again. These days for me life seems about minimising exposure to risk!

You are not alone .. I've also driven off with my single step out....only once sofar

Switch the panel off in my Knaus and the retractable step is isolated and doesn't do its stuff. I've only done it once but the kind driver who flashed me and drove in the ditch was a life saver. 😊

Ours closes automatically when I start the engine but.......I use a double caravan step as well to help Jean in as she is unable to use the normal steps and yes, you guessed it....I have drove away twice now and forgotten the steps. Expensive mistake, and a bonus for the one pulling in next.

I think they were on special at Aldi lately you could get a few in as spares!

Hi There,
If you have a habit of leaving the step or anything else behind, try one of these tricks.
1) If you tie a bit of string to it, long enough so if you drive off it drags behind it won't bash the van, and you get into the habit of looking in the mirrors as you drive off - you will see it.
2) put a hat, cloth, notice or something on the dash covering the speedo, so you have to move it when you start - that way it will remind you to check the outside.

I tend to 'crawl' off the site and look at the pitch to see if we have left anything - including any rubbish that might have blown under the van. We always try to leave only four wheel prints when we leave.

Visited our friends with our new baby. On leaving she held baby while we loaded, got in, waved and started to drive off. "Haven't you forgotten something?" she shouted. It was the baby of course.

My father was rather fond of saying that we all make mistakes and then not finishing the sentence, but looking me in the eye ... No idea what he was going on about ...

Steve

Mine won't start with the step out, or so I am lead to believe  Easy mistake bet it won't happen again!
Mine will start with step out but the step folds automatically when you start up. As a relative newbie I assumed that all steps operated on this principle so it is useful to know that it can go wrong.

We do the same since hubby once tried to leave whilst our late dog Midge was still sat outside sunning himself! :giggle:

I needed to move ours a few feet on the drive once whilst it was still plugged into to the electric at home, as the cable was fed through a hole in the fence before being plugged into the MH it partly pulled the EHU plug connector off the cable when it got tight - in my defence I did have a friend visiting who was nattering at me at the time and blocking my side mirror view so I couldn't see it and I didn't know hubby had plugged it in either (not on the 'to do' list for that day!).

Hubby once drove into a tree branch right in front of the MH which he knew was there ... this was in our very early MHing days though and our first MH with an overcab.

As for stuff falling out inside ... we've had numerous fridges fly open, drawers slide etc when changing MHs as you forget which ones you need to secure and which do it themselves but soon learn, however the worst was when we had a Chausson with a high level grill and the door's magnetic contact failed so the grill pan etc all flew out and put a nice dint in the door frame of the washroom!

Thankfully my step retract as I start the engine. But last time out we left the rubber mat behind. Another £1 down the drain😂😂
Mine does too. I wish I had a pound for everyone who had frantically knocked on my drivers window as I started the engine, only to sheepishly apologise when it tucks itself neatly away. Mind you, my better half was less pleased that time in the Asda car park when I started the engine as she was loading up the shopping!

I think we’ve all done something similar or stupid at some time, I did the same with my double step when in an awkward narrow fuel station in France, only moved a matter of inches forward and “crunch” caught the concrete plinth the pump was on alongside the van, buggered beyond repair, nearly £400 later had the step alarm fixed the same time as the new step, there should be a warning beeper fitted if not fit one, cos one day believe me you’ll forget it, I did.

I've told this before but many years ago we were away with the three kids and our lovely Huge black Briard. We had been away for a while and had got used to hooking the dog onto the tow ball at the rear of the van to stop him creating on site havoc. It was time to pack up and leave. Everything put away, Kids settled in the rear seats me and the wife up front and off we jolly well went heading for the next night stop...........Do I have to say any more.:censored:
I hope there was a moderately non-fatal outcome.
Thanks for the warning, this (hopefully) eclipses all other motivational tales.

Our van emits a high pitched sound if the step is left out once the engine is started. There is a button on the dash to draw it back in. Had my son confused when he borrowed the van and could not work out what the noise was about. The button saves the palaver of stopping, getting gout of the drivers seat and drawing the step back in. I assumed that this is normal, evidently not.

We all make mistakes

I was somewhere high in the mountains in Northern Spain in a huge van with tired and hungry kids and a shall we say ‘tired and tetchy’ wife, It took ages to find the campsite I had booked earlier, When we eventually found it, it looked rough and ready, but more than good enough. It took me a while to get into the place with the narrow gate on an angle, and once in it took me a while longer to find the owner. It took me ages to realise it was the homemade wooden leccy post that was dead and not a trip in my van or a duff fuse in my cable. Finally got level, (it was a mountain site) found the owner again and got the power turned on. Sorted, I was looking forward to a beer.

Then I heard, “We’ve got no food, we need milk, we need bread. you said you were going to stop on the way here” A futile argument followed. Now I was cursing, the kids were crying, Siân still telling me yet again, "well you said you were going to stop on the way, we’ve got nothing, the kids are hungry"

Bugger it, we’ll have to go back down the mountain to that village we passed about 6 miles back. Off the levels, negotiated the gate far too fast. Sped down the mountain, again far too fast, hoping the little shop would still be open. It was. I parked right outside, almost blocking the road, and went in. When I came out stocked up with goodies I couldn’t fail to notice the 25m orange cable behind my van, attached to a little wooden electric post.

We wild camped that night.
Oh, I've done that but at home, ripping out the socket in the side of the van!
