Nationwide Flex Account

...

Many banks in Spain now charge for cash withdrawals if not accepting their exchange rate, Santander in Spain do not do this for other Santander accounts but do for others.

The fee paying ones are different and operated by different companies, not banks as far as I know and not usually outside banks.
Every day is a learning day on MHF. Thankfully Santander are relatively easy to find in Spain. Is this restricted to Spain or is it becoming more prevalent throughout Europe? Fixed or %?

Personally I have not had banks in countries other than Spain attempt to impose a charge but my other experience is limited to France and Portugal.

We were charged a transaction/commission fee at Citi Europe withdrawing cash using Flexplus debit card.

Won't be doing that again. First time we've ever been charged in mainland Europe for withdrawing cash.

If u go with nationwide flex plus make sure u read every letter of the small print and then read it again. Whatever u do dont forget anything when u do the medical interview. Bast@rd$.

Cheers Berni .... you have to be so careful these days

A few points, with NW you have to pay a fee if you are over 70 where Lloyds covers you up to 80. NW requires you to declare all medical conditions where Lloyds has a huge exclusion list of conditions you don't need to declare. NW standard cover is 30 days, Lloyds 45 days but you can extend up to 120 days, however another Funster reported that Lloyds have wacked the charges right up for extending.

Lloyds suits us as we only go for 45 days and the boss being ex Lloyds we only pay 1/2 the monthly fee.
A friend had a head injury in Barbados and Lloyds were excellent.
Does Lloyds also include european breakdown recovery for the year

No, it’s just UK unfortunately.

We have an old Lloyds Premier account, no longer available which initially sounds expensive but it covers trips worldwide up to 63 days. There are few medical exclusions. It also covers children in full time education up to the age of 24 provided they travel with another adult and it doesn’t have to be one of us. Our youngest is 23 and still at Uni so for us it’s worth every penny. Especially as we seem to have acquired a few medical complaints that Nationwide would have made us pay extra for! We nearly changed about a year ago funnily enough.

I've got a free Flex account, and a select credit card. I don't know about insurance, sorry. I often make foreign currency payments with the credit card, and they don't add a charge for this.

I've also used their recommend a friend promo, and this means that my friend an I each get £100 when my friend transferred his balance. If you do switch to Nationwide, I, and I'm sure others here, would be happy to recommend you so that you can receive that bonus.

The insurance is part of FlexPLUS which costs £13 per month.

So, breakdown cover with RAC might be £200pa BUT Flexplus costs £156pa and gives travel insurance etc.
It used to pay interest which could give up to approx £6 per month back, so a real good deal.

I'm thinking of getting a Lloyds account, following earlier comments, to give me travel insurance but keeping FlexPlus for the breakdown cover.

I've just changed one of our accounts from Flex account to Flexplus.

I worked out that the cost of breakdown cover on our vehicles (two cars a motorhome and a motorbike) was more than the cost of the Flexpus account, so take in the other 'extras' added to the new account it was worth it.

I am also surprised I was in the Sierra Nevada mountains misfueled with petrol they could not be more helpful low loader arrived picked us and up 60 miles to a garage sorted and on our way in four hours .The only thing we played for was fresh diesel fantastic service

Struggle to find any here now that don't charge

Don't really like but the only one that works on this tablet.

I have not needed to try and withdraw cash in Spain for a while now, still free in Portugal.

I am happy with NW Flexplus---£157 a year and worldwide travel ins and good breakdown cover. Also a good card for foreign use.Dont know about if you get any interest on your money of cash back on purchases anymore.

I'm surprised about this. Last year when l misfueled my diesel with petrol they told me
that they don't cover it.
l had to pay a company they recommended which charged £140.00 although l have
a Plus account.
A piece of hosepipe and an old oil can would have been much cheaper,,BUSBY.

Just had our quote from Nationwide travel insurance which I don't think can be beaten.cl

£356.40. For 135 days, including age extension, medical history and covers another 135 days provided taken within 12 month period. I will get £100 for opening Flexi Plus account so insurance will only be £256.40. Also includes free breakdown cover for car and motorhome and our phones.

We have this card and have the medical insurance component.

Seemed fine until I mentioned that I had a tad of type 2, and suddenly I was nearly dead and they wanted two hundred quid extra.

Shop around, it isn't good value.

The Nationwide Credit Card tied to the account "We do not charge transaction fees when you use your card to withdraw cash or make payments abroad." You can then credit the Credit Card account to ensure you do not pay interest.
I was told that although it was against the rules to pay money into your credit card account to create a positive balance, they would not stop me doing it, so when I draw cash out, it's my money so they can't charge interest. If you draw on the debit card they do charge.

£356.40. For 135 days, .....

Does that price include the 12 X £13, account fees, that you pay over the year?

No it dos not include this. However, if you look at the whole deal, it is in my view outstanding. For the £356.40 my wife and I are covered for as many 135 day worldwide trips we can fit in, in a 12 month period. So that will cover our 4 month trip to Greece later this year and also cover us when we over-winter in Morocco or Spain next winter. It also provides me with Motorhome breakdown cover in Europe and my Car in the UK. Both our phones are covered too. I will also get £100 for Joining so my Travel Insurance will only cost £256.40. Like many other Funsters I have spent hours looking at travel insurance and its not only a minefield but pensioners pay through the nose just for basic cover. Once you hit 70 or go beyond 30 days the costs sky rocket. It has become so expensive we simply can no longer afford to use the big company's anymore. This deal is exceptional.

Insurance via nationwide is only as good as the company's claim process. It might be the best price you can find but if they fail to pay for your treatment or reimburse you then its worthless. Send them your medical history before taking out cover because if you try to claim they will get it anyway and if you inadvertently forget to tell them 'everything' you have been prescribed they will void your policy and you wont even get the premiums back.
Had they paid my claim I am sure I would be singing their praises but I just advise extreme caution.

No charges for debit card cash withdrawals or purchases with Flexplus.

No need to send them my medical history. I answered all there questions to there and my total satisfaction with nothing left out. High blood pressure, Cholesterol and Acid Re-flux is all I have and has been controlled through medication for the last several years with no changes to my medication. I've forgotten the last time I saw my G.P. My wife has no medical conditions at all, so very simple and straight forward. I think we are very fortunate with our health and do not expect to make any claims, it's just insurance. More than happy to proceed with this arrangement. Why did they not pay your claim???
