Nationwide Flex Account

Insurance via nationwide is only as good as the company's claim process. It might be the best price you can find but if they fail to pay for your treatment or reimburse you then its worthless. Send them your medical history before taking out cover because if you try to claim they will get it anyway and if you inadvertently forget to tell them 'everything' you have been prescribed they will void your policy and you wont even get the premiums back.
Had they paid my claim I am sure I would be singing their praises but I just advise extreme caution.
Claimed on travel insurance once,,900 pounds,,quick and hassle free claim,,used breakdown at home twice,,again excellent,If you don't furnish them with information requested well the outcome is obvious,,they are not a charity..Enough said.BUSBY.

busby not quite as clear cut as you are trying to imply and I dont intend to discus my medical history on an open forum.
Beware nationwide's medical insurance is all, if you are happy - good luck to you.

I can understand anyone not wanting to disclose there medical history on a public site. I rightly or wrongly assume you are disappointed with Nationwide Travel Insurance because you inadvertently forget to tell them everything about your medical history and as a result your claim was rejected. They do make this clear when applying for cover.

PhilandMena inded they do and you have a 5min phone conversation to relate everything to them. If during that time you forget to mention something that has absolutely no bearing on the later claim they can and did refuse my claim which was for imho a substantial amount.

I am sure that when I made a medical declaration to them my medical condition was confirmed to me in writing on the insurance document and I had 14 days to cancel it if not happy. BUSBY.

Good question. The travel insurance industry is unbelievable. Go on a comparison site put in your details for say a 60 day holiday in Europe and wait for the results. They will range from a few hundred pounds to a few thousand pounds ??? A bit of a racket. For us, with our age, medical history and length of travel, this is hard to beat.

I guess any insurance company would do this if it could avoid paying out, especially if it's a substantial amount. Like any other business, profit is king !

Also some people will try to"forget"adverse things to get a cheap quote or for example insure with their offspring being additional drivers when they are the main driver. Not saying that is what anyone on here did but I think all companies if they find out later they weren't given the correct information will not pay out.

My quote for worldwide medical cover was £90. However, by agreeing that I would waive insurance cover for current problems the cost was zero.

Given that I only go to Europe, I'm happy to rely on EHIC for any on-going difficulties.

The EHIC is a great idea for getting free emergency treatment, Only downside is France does not accept it and it does not cover repatriation. You did well to get a quote for £90. Mine was £154 for being 70 and requiring some basic low risk medication.

I thought I’d share my story regarding relying on the Ehic which I’ve always been happy to do but then again we never had a cause to use it. 2 years ago I had a Heart Attack in Spain and was taken to the Public Hospital the only trouble was they diagnosed me with Bronchitis twice, after weeks of getting worse my Wife decided we were going private and they promptly gave me an Angiogram but my Heart was too damaged to take the Stents and they said I would need a Bypass the cost £14,000 but if anything went wrong it could escalate to £80,000 or beyond so they arranged to transfer me to a teaching hospital 2 hours drive from the Campsite were it took 3 weeks to get me stable so we could drive home my Wife slept on a cot bed in my room and had all her meals in the Cafe, the staff and most of the Doctors didn’t speak English not a complaint but it was very stressful for her. The private hospital left me in the corridor until my Wife paid £1,000 deposit and the cost of my treatment was £7,500 that had to be settled before my Op well worth it as they saved my life which brings me to to travel insurance. Thankfully when we made it home (Wife did the driving) the NHS sorted me out so we’re off to Spain for 10 weeks and as I have an ICD fitted, 5 Stents and Type2 Diabetes didn’t hold out much hope especially as my first quote was £1,100! My wife trawled the Internet for days and used Moneysupermarket.com and I have insurance for pre-existing conditions for £226 the Wife’s policy was £30 with Travel Insurance Saver they have excellent reviews and the Policy small print is in plain English. I’ve always had good health and thought we’d chance it with the Ehic’s but never again and we thought if we can afford to run a Motorhome what’s £100 a month for peace of mind.

Yes very true, Wife’s 90 year old Mother was taken to Jonzac Hospital with Chest pains they took her through to the Resus quickly enough but wouldn’t let my Wife in until she’d handed over an EHIC and her Credit Card.

What was the name of the company you use now,,? BUSBY.

Searched with Moneysupermarket.com and the company we both decided on was Travel Insurance Saver £223.63p for Ten Weeks.

Where does what you disclose on your medical history start and end, obviously conditions that have been diagnosed and receiving medication to keep the condition under control ie high blood pressure etc, operations heart attacks etc etc you may have had in the past but, if you had a heavy cold and the doctor prescribed a course of antibiotics for a chest infection should minor things like this be disclosed.

Yes because if you break your leg and dont tell them you had a prescription for whatever in the last 12 months you will find you dont have any insurance.

When you’re filling in the form you search so if it’s relevant and you put in chest infection it will either ask for more information or not, I have noticed the online forms are a lot easier now. I used to get near the end then get told to phone, very frustrating and I used to think forget it. Not so now my health is complex and I finished the form in about five minutes, I’ve just received my cover through the post and am very happy with it.

Thanks for that, I should have made it clear I was thinking more of Nationwide where I have the Flexplus insurance and as far as I can remember the only question was, what medical conditions do you suffer from, and I have always thought how far do you need to go.

Think this would be true of all insurance companies.I always ask for a paper copy of all insurance to be posted to me to verify it,,BUSBY.

We have had Nationwide Flexplus for many years with a number of pre-existing conditions and had to make our first claim 3 weeks ago
This was for cancellation on medical grounds and was an expensive long haul trip with multiple payments in different currencies
Answered first ring on phone, gave me a claims reference and a link to send details online
Had to get a medical form completed by the doctor
Send all docs online Friday pm. Got email 1020 Mon saying the claim was being processed and another email 10 minutes later saying claim paid in full into my bank account
Brilliant service

I think that you are wrong (but I hope I never have to prove it  ).

When I spoke with the Nationwide health screening service I gave a list of our pre-existing conditions. As stated previously, they wanted £90 to cover these but were happy to accept the risk on other conditions without any payment.

So as I read it, my diabetes (type 2, controlled by diet and exercise) would not be supported [but I'm not sure what it could lead to] whereas breaking my leg would receive their support. I wonder if they might say "the diabetes caused you to fall and break your leg" but I'm assuming not.

As stated previously, again, I'm happy to rely on EHIC and I would look to the local services to get the mending started. However, I hope that Nationwide would sort out my repatriation.

As per the first line, I hope that I never have to test this theory.
