Must I get my Motorhome an M.O.T.?

Providing its insured you can take vehicle for MOT without current MOT and road tax, but the test must be prebooked for that day. If it failed I don’t know if you can drive it home.

I may be wrong, if you sorn your vehicle and your mot runs out you cannot tax your vehicle, to take it on the road without an mot is legal if you are going to get a mot, you legally couldn't take it on the road without road tax having been paid.
You can drive it to an MOT station providing you have a pre-arranged appointment.

My van is insured and taxed but my wife is anxious about introducing contact with potentially infected people, I have considered having the van collected and returned by the test station but still wary of infection. Sooner or later this may apply to all vehicle owners but to date I have not heard anyone else dealing with it. I view this all from a very senior citizens vulnerable point of view.
Thank you all for your practical suggestions.

Have it collected and returned but do not use it or go anywhere near it for 72 hours after it is returned. I have been told by my now retired previous GP that the virus can not survive without a host for more than 72 hours. You might want to leave it for 80 hours if you are really concerned.

Our car goes for MOT on Wednesday. We are in quarantine and last time we were in the car was 25 Feb :)

We come out of quarantine on Friday morning but would only use the car in an emergency.

In an emergency, would you care if you got a fine.

Sorned states that the vehicle is off road and still insured ..
No it does NOT.
SORN has nothing to do with insurance or MOT.
It is purely for VED purposes.

I had a car stood in my back yard since SORN had to be declared annually and long after it changed to continuous SORN..... Around 5 years.
It was never insured or MOTed and if it had been a requirement DVLA would have been checking and sending me snotty letters and fines. .

No but the car was already booked in for it's MOT at a local garage and since it is "clean" there is no risk to the MOT tester.

We have the van if we need transport and don't want to use the car.

Yes, you're wrong.
That would be a catch 22 situation
You can't buy tax without an MOT but to get an MOT it has to be driven on the road
It must be insured and the MOT has to be pre-arranged.

Having just read rac article Terryway is correct. That's why you always have to be careful with advice as laws are often altered.

I believe that you can drive a vehicle without MOT or tax so long as its only to and from the MOT station, no detours to do shopping etc!

Edit ... just done a check and I am correct:

When you can drive your vehicle
You can only drive a vehicle with a SORN on a public road to go to or from a pre-booked MOT or other testing appointment. You face court prosecution and a fine of up to £2,500 if you use it on the road for any other reason.

My first MOT is due next month and I’ve checked the T&Cs of my insurance.....

‘It must at all times have a valid MOT certificate unless not required due to age of the vehicle’

As this is in the Long Term Touring and Full Timing section, something I don’t do, I’ve just emailed my insurer asking for clarification should I not be able to get the MOT carried out until after the Covid-19 restrictions are relaxed.

I’ll post a response once they reply, hopefully tomorrow.

Comfort have sent out an email recommending that you keep your van insured even if you SORN it so must be OK with them.

My tax is due end of this month and 1 st MOT middle of next month. I will tax it as it's only £13.75 a month then I can take it for a good run before the MOT is due. I will probably leave the MOT for a Month or 6 weeks as it will then fit in better with our travel plans in the future.

If your mot is due to expire shortly I wouldnt panicked to much & probably best to verify with dvla for private vehicles but I run a small fleet of lorries & Van's & I've just received notifications from them that they are extending any mots till the end of June, where the situation will be reviewed- hgv mots are notoriously difficult to book unlike a car or van which u can often book in quickly we have to book them in months in advance & I have 2 due to expire in April- I would suggest getting your Van's done asap before we're all locked down, even if you have a few months left on it - however having said that if you are locked down then u shouldn't be using it anyway, but if you're a full time it may be seriously worth considering- prior planning & preparations never hurt anybody

Mine has been on SORN since May 2015. when it came off the road for refurbishment. As it is actually 49 years old. It does not (legally) need an MOT, nor "tax", when I do finally get it back roadworthy I only have by law to Insure it, and advise the DVLA that it is returned to the road.

However I could (and will) Take it to the MOT station without "Tax" to be "MOT"d (voluntarily) and bring it back (or take it to another garage) to be repaired if necessary, as I have done with other cars in the past. There is no legal obligation current to have the MOT station carry out any repairs. That situation has existed for many years, and was allowed in order to prevent unscrupulous operators charging "ransom" prices to carry out the repair(s). Also some MOT stations, Eg: some public operators, council depots etc only do MOT`s.

Comfort have emailed back, confirming my van is insured on my driveway without an MOT. It is also covered to travel to a pre-booked MOT appointment once any travel restrictions are lifted.

Thanks Ken, saves me contacting them.

Unless I missed something, still no sign so far of DVLA extending/postponing MOTs for cars/motorhomes, even though they’ve given HGVs an extra three months.

As per instructions, I am trying to avoid contact, working from home, etc. as advised but both the car and motorhome are due MOTs in the next couple of weeks, so it seems daft to expect me to mingle for that purpose alone.

You could argue that the motorhome could wait, although I would like to give it a run out from time to time to keep everything in shape. But some people have a small motorhome as their sole vehicle.

The car should be classed as essential – even if we had public transport here, we are advised not to use it at the moment. It is needed to access medical and essential supplies. Nearest big supermarket 13 miles, nearest small one 6.

Our car is booked in for an MOT on Wednesday next week and the Motorhome this Thursday.
I was hoping that the DVLA would extend MOT for cars and Motorhomes as well.
Exactly the same as you MyrtleGuru, our car is essential to us for shopping, getting to the doctors and chemists.
The Motorhome isn’t essential but I don’t like it to be just left on the driveway for months.
I think I saw on here advice for motorhomes that aren’t going to be used for months. Can you direct me to it please?

Mine was booked in for a service and mot on Thursday. Unfortunately I haven't taken it for a run for about 5 weeks as I was going to this week. It rather looks like it will be there for rather a long time now with the latest directive!

MOT booked for Wednesday I cancelled this morning - Won't be used for at least 3 months so 3 months MOT wasted if it passed - bigger problems if it failed. Do you want strangers in your van at this time?

Sometimes commonsense is needed .....

Stay home and stay safe....

We're in an interesting situation left the MH for a service and mot today. Phoned the garage at 5pm mot passed parts not there for the service and they are doing it tomorrow. Meanwhile Boris announced the shutdown. Would you get it done and risk driving it 6 miles home or phone 1st thing pay for the parts get it early and take it back later or what?

Unless the rules have changed recently I don't think insurance and MOT are linked. Driving on a public road without a licence invalidates insurance.
What about those who SORN vehicles but keep them insured in case of theft/fire?
noit true unless its changed recently my policy say having a licence or not being disqualified from holding a licence

not motorhome, but my doblo needs mot within the 12 week period, It lives on the road so can't sorn and need mot for the insurance. will wait a few weeks and see what arises.road tax due end of the month so that will get done tomorrow. Have been doing that online since it started before anyone thinks i am trying to find a post office.

Did Boris really have to tell folks to behave?

It seems he did.

We closed our business this morning until things return to something like normal. We phoned and explained why to all customers - to remove danger from them and our fitters.

Still one customer wanted his non urgent work done on Thursday......he'll be back of the queue when we start back...

Why did deliboy and euro330 get banned for their little squabble on here i didnt see any bad language or insults

If they are prepared to do the work?. Then in your circumstances. I (personally) would take the risk and get the Motorhome back home. Take cleaning wipes and hand gel, maybe disposable gloves?. wipe all the services and pay with a credit /debit card. wear a mask if you have any isues on that front. (although I am informed that they only stop you giving it to someone else, the design does not stop you getting it?). My opinion for what it is worth. If you wished, you could return home via the Supermarket get some "essentials" which you show the police in the (unlikely) event of being stopped.
