Loving the pics of the trulli in Alborabello! Have been lucky enough to holiday twice in some a couple of miles out of town.
Hope the weather perks up a bit soon and that you have a great time in Greece. Enjoy.

Thanks @mikebeaches, they were lovely. We met an English couple who bought and renovated one, they come 8 times a year. They said it’s a valley with 7 villages in, the most touristy being Alborabello. Apparently there is a lovely festival in November when all the houses are lit up outside and everyone displays their home made crafts.

We’ve arrived in Greece... our camping on deck experience was not quite as I had imagined. I had visions of a big open deck flooded with sunshine, everyone sat outside their vans enjoying a drink and chatting, maybe a handsome Greek slowly strumming away on his guitar.
The laughter and delight as we watched dolphins breaching the waves on our bow. Being lulled to sleep by the swishing of water along the hull...
Instead we were so crammed in next to huge artics that it was a struggle to open the door. The van sat under a roof with flood lights permanently on. The noise of the boat engines only just drowning out the hum from the refrigerated lorries and loud tannoy announcements in Greek, Italian, French and English!
We both did our contortions to get out of the van to walk the dog only to become lost in the tight maze of vehicles! 17 hours and £440 (return) later and we arrived. Millie had refused to wee at all on board so first stop was a bit of scrub land by the port... but the sun was shining, guys were riding motorcycles with no helmets, there had been no passport control and everyone was happy to overtake on double lines...what a wonderfully laid back happy place.
We drove just down the coast to Ionio Blue beach bar. Cc no 62400
Don’t ask the name of the place it’s all Greek to us! We have no way of pronouncing, reading or working out where the hell we are!
But it has a lovely long dog friendly beach.
A park anywhere you like for free attitude with an owner who greeted Martin like a long lost brother and gave him a welcome coffee.
We soon made ourselves at home and laid in the sun listening to the waves crashing on the nearby beach, loads of twittering birds and the occasional heavy thrum of big fat bees.
In honour of our first Greek trip in 30 years a homemade feta salad.
We sat on the beach watching the sun dip down over the horizon and realised just how lovely motorhoming is and how lucky we are.
Efcharisto (efferisto means thankyou...we think!).

Many kind thanks for this. Very helpful. I'm leaning towards Brindisi as my jumping off point from Italy to Igoumenitsa as my initial findings suggest it may well be more cost effective. I'll look at my options again before I book.

When we went we used Viamare we did Miloan Lines Ancona to Patras. Can't speak highly enough of Viamare, gave us quotes on all the different routes and ferry companies we were interested in. They made sure we got every discount going, early booking discount, old fogies discount, told us to join Miloan club (free) for another 10% off. Super company to deal with.

We rode the pushbikes through the dusty lanes into the nearest village this morning. The smell of jasmine and honeysuckle floated on the warm breeze.
We were greeted at every property by the barking of a scabby dog, usually chained up but each telling us with certainty to stay away. Every bark answered by the next dog on the lane, a doggy chorus accompanied our ride.
It’s just as well they were there or I’d have been tempted to scrump some of the produce being grown in the fields. Lovely ripe red tomatoes, acres of melons, potatoes and spring onions.
We ducked under lemon trees heavy with fruit, just waiting for Gin and tonic.
And of course Olive trees everywhere.
We found this guy chained up outside the pharmacy...no idea what he’s advertising but I don’t want it...
Martin however, wanted cake...I’m resisting so of course he had 2..greedy guts..
After buying some local tomatoes, feta cheese and herbs we headed back for an afternoon on the beach, fantastic that Millie could join us only 50 yards from our van with free sunbeds and umbrellas..
We have no desire to move from this free stop anytime soon.

We only purchased a one way ticket as we will be driving back via Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary. The cost of a single ticket from Ancona - Patras (23hrs sailing time) was 260 euros.

It is worth learning the Greek alphabet characters, both lower and upper cases, but as you have probably already found out the roadsigns are written with Greek and Roman alphabets.

Hilary, as you can see from my suggestions, it's purely what I thought I should learn before going on holidays to Corfu and Kefelonia - in no way have I learned the language!
I should have said Yasass instead of Yasoo, but really, the fact that you're having a go seems to be really appreciated in Greece.
They're certainly more forgiving than other European partners....

Just a general tip about any language difficulties in Greece - if you need a translation ask the younger generation or alternatively a pharmacist as they have often trained outside Greece.

I found one in Decathlon in Beni
bloody hell ! That's cheaper than the quote I had from Brindisi to Igoumenitsa . I will look at my ferry options again.
Looks like a sex shop to me !
