This is probably aimed at those of you that spend a long time away in your motorhome/ camper. I'm looking at Caravan Guard for insurance for our new van. The online quote limits us to 11,000 miles a year. I'm going to ask them about increasing this but how do the long distance travellers get on? With a trip to Greece overland next year via Croatia, Montenegro and Albania we will be putting on some miles. They said they can quote me for extra miles, so will talk to them tomorrow. Thanks in advance.

Caravan Guard just replied its approx another £100 to go to 15,000 miles.
Ask about the 1000 mile jumps, for Comfort some are about a third the cost of others, no idea why, it's just how it works.

Looks like £25 per 1000 miles but will ask. Just tried online quote with Comfort but got the 'we cannot quote at this time' message, they'll prob call soon!

I think when I increased mine it had to be in 2k increments.

This is part of a spreadsheet I did when we were trying to decide what to do and gives the 'jumps' for some of the companies so you can see how sometimes it makes a big difference, other times not - the difference is comparing it to the lowest quote including recovery & legal.

When requesting insurance quotes just ask for 20k per year or whatever miles you estimate.
With comfort insurance you can only stipulate up to 12000 miles limit then they put you on unlimited with a hike in premium.

Basically the scammers want you to buy it ,insure it with little or no mileage & no use so they can earn money without any exposure?

Mmmm …. I got Comfort to reduce our mileage after the first year. Can’t remember from what to what. I think it’s about 5k a year now. We won’t do that, even being out every month, except winter.

Insurers can easily check your annual mileage, if your motorhome is over 3 years old, as it’s recorded on your MoT online record.

To move your insurance you could SORN the vehicle for a short period then un-SORN when you want your insurance to begin.

I don't believe Auto renewal is a legal requirement at all, it is just a way of insurance companies keeping your business should you fail to contact them in time. I always opt out of auto renewal. If it was a legal requirement I could not do that.
Received auto renewal for our car last November and gave us a stupid price ,so went on line and the best quote was with the company we were already with, tried to purchase it but would not accept payment.
pnoned them up told them that was not legal and got my insurance for same price as last year…

What do "they" deem as annual mileage
* calendar year
*MOT to MOT
* insurance renewal to insurance renewal
??
My mot currently falls in January, my renewal date for insurance is July.

& that is why the question was asked ,'do they roll over unused amounts?' as if I was being charged 200 to go from 3 to 5k & didn't use it Id want the rollover or a refund.

They will do 1000 miles increments until 12000. After that they just have unlimited

SORN is only to do with VED. You will ALWAYS need insurance.

But they don't ask for current mileage on renewal!
That’s always been my thinking as well. However, they could contact your tracker supplier who would have your mileage. Mine is shown on my App. One tip I have is to go lower and then increase just when/if you need it. I have found that it is cheaper than when you ask for it at the start of the policy even with their admin charge, as they appear to prorata it.

The concern, as always with insurance companies, is that you inadvertently wander into one of their cynical little traps to give them a questionably legitimate reason to deny a claim.
Cynical Mick versus Cynical corporations! 😐

You don’t need insurance to SORN a vehicle if it’s off road. It is only whether you are prepared to take the risk. I SORNed a car for 3 months and no insurances is required. You could store in a secure compound whilst SORNed. SORN is not just about VED.

You should know that esteemed Funster gus-lopez is a Spanish resident and it is there where the auto renew is the norm.

We were with AIB in 2017 when we decided to go to Norway approx 6K miles which would take us over our annual limit

Rang AIB, they couldn’t add any miles, we had to take out a new policy , which is when we moved to Comfort 🙄👍

Same here, recently done 3 weeks in Europe and started @ 3,695 miles thought we're looking at 2,500k+ so called Caravan guard and moved my limit from 6k to 8k for £43 Inc: IPT like Vat but Ins based, rediculous price for a small top up really. So hot my initial guestimate wrong, and don't think would of made any difference at the time. Only ended up 490 miles over the 6k but felt better I was covered just in case !

I'm with comfort and initially had 8000 miles but did exceed it slightly (shhh). I hoped it to 10,000 the following year and last year and this it just about works. This year we did 3 weeks in Scotland (travelling not in a campsite) a trip to Le Mans and the Loire valley (a little less moving around) and currently on a trip to Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Italy etc. I reckon this will be about 5000 miles. I reckon I will keep with in my 10,000 as we won't use it much after this trip and before renewal in March.

Comfort have never asked for mileage. I'm not sure how they would acertain that if needed. They could use MOT records I guess but as it is less than 3 years old it hasn't had one yet.

N.B. I discovered I wasn't insured in Montenegro. So I guess I can deduct that mileage from my yearly allowance. I wonder how that would work?
Comfort do ask for mileage. They charged me over £90 to increase from 8k to 10k. Read your docs carefully. Aliva are my underwriters

Luckily, it's never been an issue for me as I've never needed to make a claim.
I reckon that the risk (which is what you are paying for) should be related to the days of use as much as the distance travelled. Low mileages could be regarded as high risk, rather than low, because you'd not be so familiar with that vehicle each time you drove it. Furthermore, it's still at risk whilst sitting on a campsite, away from storage.
Another thing to ponder is that, if you advised 12k per year and made a claim in the first month of cover having driven more than the pro-rata 1k miles, would that result in a penalty? Our mileage is 'lumpy' and, if I was ahead of my quota, it could simply be because I was about to face a 'mileage famine'.

I asked that question and they said in the event of a claim the underwriter would probably use MOT data.

I know they ask you what mileage you do or want to do in a year but what I mean is they do not ask for the mileage on your Speedo on the date of the start of your insurance so they have no idea how many miles you have done in the year.

Maybe your experience is different but I have never told them how many miles are on my van.
