Morocco 2019

When we visited the campsite in 2016, I too had some difficulty in finding the campsite but in the end arrived safely. It is a bit of a climb getting to it but should not present any difficulty for any motorhome. We were climbing up the hill in 3rd gear so I can't see a situation where a camper could not get up there. Be warned, the campsite is a shit hole and with no option to stay anywhere else the owner simply does not bother to get even the basics right. Your going to pay top dollar for a minging shit hole. I would like to think some work has been done on it since 2016
Never the less, enjoy your visit to the town. Anouther place that should be visited...once.

I wouldnt call the campsite a shithole. Its certainly not as bad as some we stayed at in Morocco but I will admit its pretty poor.
The only facilities we used were fresh water and cassette disposal which suits us fine.
We LOVED Chefchaouan itself, a wonderful, very pretty place.
The terrace of the hotel just outside the campsite entrance is a wonderful place to enjoy a cold beer and the view over the town is fabulous

Well the way we came in was in first gear with spinning wheels and smoking tyres. Others did the same.

I guess you chose a better route.

The campsite is OK but not great.

We ve never found accessing it to be particularly difficult, 3 litre Fiat FWD, but going through the town won't have been much fun :(

We quite like the campsite because the views are so good and the town is lovely.

Couldnt really care less about the facilities, thats what we have a mh for.

Anyone heading for meknes, We've just been told the royal place is closed for 3 months, will check it out ourselves and let you know.
Other than that what a great place, we parked outside the walls 50 dirhams there is water and toilet emptying of sorts, the parking that philandmena kindly suggested was full, so, although the parking is on the main road it was surprisingly quiet and a good night's sleep was had by all, no barking dogs, bonus

We're in the car park, outside the walls, we met the vw man yestetday when we came round to see about parking

Meknes, yes the mausoleum is closed, we went to the royal stables, really not worth the 140dhr for 2 to get in, on the other hand the Meknes museum was worth every bit of the 20drh for 2 it cost, we were advised that the prison doesnt warrent the 120 drh for two either, also if you've had enough tagines, there's a great little pizza place just down the hill outside the main gates calls Du Gout,

This is madness, we did not pay to go into the stables in 2016 ? And the cost to visit the underground prison was as best I can recall 10 Dirhams each, paid to the guy in the small cabin near the prison entrance. Where are you getting these prices from, it does not make sense.

Just looked on Trip Advisor. Stables have been subject to a substantial increase and now 70 Dirhams  and underground prision as of last year still 10 Dirham. I'm glad we visited when we did. There getting greedy now.

Mmm it's far too expensive for what you get, the price for the prison came from an English couple who had just come from there and said not to bother

I think they may have misled you on the price as according to internet still 10 Dirham.

Hi @billym Did you use the N13 between Meknes and Chefchaouen? Last time we used it it was Ok but that was 3 years ago tbf. What were the issues with it?

Or did you come into the wrong end of Chefchaouen? Its much better to drive past the town on the N13 and come back on yourself from the Northern side to get to the campsite IMO

I'm now agreeing with you @billym We've travelled up today from Meknes to Oued Laou. I'm shocked by how much the N13 had deteriorated since last time, the lower part in between Meknes and Ouezzane in particular has subsided really badly in places with some huge ruts, we ve got full air suspension but scrambled eggs is on the menu tonight:LOL:.
I suppose we ve got used to the roads in Morocco getting better and better, its a bit of a shock to encounter one that has actually got worse.

I suppose the difference is having the experience to compare it to a previous time. When we drove that road recently we didn't think it was too bad in the scheme of things. Sure you had to take care in places but we travelled some Moroccan roads that were lots worse. Maybe we wore rose tinted first timer glasses.
All the best.
Nik
PS
It's pi**ing down in Lagos, Portugal currently. Hope it's sunny where you are.

We're heading up there tomorrow without air suspension , should we give it a miss or just take it slow

We came over the tizi n tichka again today,(Marrakesh to Ouarzazate) planning on spending time in Dades. We had thick thick mist and rain l, a long slog but still an amazing drive, now parked up on the lake area 10 miles east of Ouarzazate. P.s the van is covered in bright red muck !!!

Nice pics Phil but it's looking empty!
This time of year usually a lot more there, or was there 'selective' photography involved?

Say hi to the locals for us.....

No Darren, the upper part of the site has been emptying quite quickly after the Almond Festival finished at the weekend, as forecast by the bowser driver. Still quite crowded closer to the road.

There's been a remarkable lack of Brits seen in Morocco this year - the first non-MHF we met was yesterday when two couples arrived and parked quite close to us. They did get invited tyo the beer-o-clock though.

Thanks everyone for making an enjoyable afternoon of it.

But honestly, it was the bloody cold wind as the sun went down over the hill that chased everyone away!
