Morocco 2017

Hi Terry
Intended to cross mid January but unfortunately delayed. Hoping now to be able to get down there by 24th - weather prevailing, as we are newbies for Morocco and would appreciate having company, if that's ok to join your group? It might be tight to get there in time but will do our best.

Happy to have you; but PLEASE take care on the way down, weather looks decidedly iffy in France at the moment.
Just keep me informed.

Does anyone know if the marroc telecom shop in assilah is open on a Sunday??

Don't think so - despite being a Muslim country, Moroccan commerce tend to follow their former French masters and have a 5 day working week followed by le weekend. However you may be able to buy sim cards in a tobacconist or similar shop somewhere.

A bit late in the day but, can Terry or anyone say whether people meeting to travel together in groups in Algeciras meet up in Lidl's car park still or, as someone mentioned earlier, Mercadona?? Also, if I complete online documentation before travelling, do I have to enter exact dates of travel? I ask because at this stage (weather, etc) not certain to arrive on time. Also, when booking crossing with Carlos, is the return open-ended?
Hoping for some early replies. Thanks in advance.

There is now a biggish parking area next door to Carlos office (Voyages Normandie) which is behind Carrefour. His office at Lidl is closed, please don't park there. Folk used to use the parking area next to Mercadona because nobody else did - you still can if you want but it's lonely down there............!

If you're getting your tickets with Carlos don't bother about documentation, the girls do (most of) it all for you, you just need to sign it. He normally sells open-return tickets.

@Rodneyplonker I'll keep you updated of where we are (I'll start a "Conversation" for all who've said they'd like to join us) - maybe meet up somewhere else, depending on how you get on.

Drive safely everyone coming down through France.

Hi
The Maroc telecom shop was closed when we got to Asillah on Saturday afternoon last year. We got sorted out at the centre commercial at
Dropped pin
near Rabat, Morocco

It is on the right as you leave the A1 heading for the A3
There is both a Maroc telecom shop and a Meditel telecom shop at the entrance. Meditel did a better deal and we found the lad in the shop very good, he set up my MiFi unit and made sure all was well.
Top ups easy everywhere
Phil

Just received "Guide to Aires and Camping Maroc" thought it was a good idea to update ourselves on areas for stopping overnight both free and guardian. Looks like it may have been a waste of time, doesn't look particularly user friendly or that informative. For example is there Guardian parking around the Medina in Essaouira still? We stayed there year on year until our last visit in 2010 yet there is no mention in the guide.

Anyone know of any more up to date source of info. We're more than happy to pay our way but not always looking for a campsite. During our last visit we did notice things starting to change a bit with local attitude to where you parked.

The guide books are always out of date. We ve found the french one terryl refers to much more up to date than VB's but the ultimate are online. Camper contact and ccinfos are up to date with reviews - no recent reviews = its probably closed.

Wifi is excellent throughout Morocco, probably because they've skipped the long-distance land lines and gone straight to mobile. There are 3 major telecoms in Maroc and you can get good deals. However we stick to Maroc Telecom because we've never found anywhere we couldn't get a signal, even high up in the Atlas mountains. It's so cheap anyway we don't worry too much about deals.

A bit hit and miss at Tafroute last year Terry. The roumer was the King was not happy about how much internet was being used by the young and he ordered the internet to be throttled back. Some days, we were struggling to connect. Not like that in 2015.

I don't recall having problem there Phil - but then we weren't uploading huge photo files...................

Can you please warn Morocco to 'brace itself ' we'll be there in September

Well, successful cross over, €175 each with group discount, a bargain.
Wifi now sorted, sun shining, great group, bring it on
It's great meeting up with fellow travellers we met last year and meeting new travellers

Glad it's all worked out for you - what was it like through Customs etc. this year?
We're about a week behind you, Tafraoute on our itinerary so probably see you there.
Do you know the dates of the almond festival yet?

Hi Terry, customs reasonably quick - seems computers working unlike last years excuse! Hi canopus, with Suggy now at Assilah and seven of us travelling to Moulay Bousselham tomorrow where Suggy has already booked us in. All good so far and fine weather -- fuel was getting on for 10 Dirhums a litre at first garage after crossing but 5 cents less at garage in Assilah. Maroc Telecom selling 5gig internet recharge at 50 Dirhum a pop -- last year we got 12gig for 100 Dirhum if I remember correctly. Will see you guy's travelling somewhere -- probably Tafraoute where most will stay a few weeks!

Looking for information from funsters who have had their vehicle serviced in Morocco. I know that Mustafa will organise someone to service the van, however, I am wondering if anybody knows a garage who can also do the work.

The reason I ask, is because I have heard of conflicting views and have also seen indifferent mechanical work carried out on behalf of Mustafa -- also the last full service I got in the UK cost around 700 pounds for my old 1986 s660......ouch!!

Regards, tgee

Suggy had a new EGR valve fitted at a main dealer in Agadir a couple of years back and had good service from them as I recall, but I don't think it was particularly cheap.

I've PM'd everybody who expressed an intention/interest in crossing to Morocco on Tuesday 24 January. If there is anyone else, please contact me asap so I can get things set up with Carlos and his daughters.

It's been chucking it down here in Benidorm this morning, typical when we've a load of washing to dry, but as I write it looks to be clearing up. Moving south tomorrow.
