We are off to Spain next week for a few weeks.Seems safer there than here at the moment.Less infected and deaths. We don’t intend to go to anything where there will be crowds.If Valencians got it outside,at a football match,then it’s easily transmitted.Good hand hygiene is very important.As someone else said,it can get in your eyes too.

Not a fan of "Black Humour" then?. It was a "Staple" when I served as a Marine Engineer, Or you would have gone barking mad doing some of the things we did!. Taking the Pee was a matter of course!. Same in the Armed Services too, I am advised. I know a catalogue of "black" jokes. Many of which would have the current crop of P-C "snowflakes" in perpetual apoplexy.

I'm sad because I love the noise and spectacle but I have to realise that as a person with diabetes heart disease its not worth the risk, most of this years touring will be small villages coast and countryside so avoiding large crowds.
I also see tonights news people who have had it before are getting reinfected scientist not sure whether it lays dormant and then flares up again or is straight reinfection

Huge annual events cancelled in multiple countries

Easyjet Shares down 18%

Chinese Grand Prix cancelled

Rugby Six Nations cancelled

Total cost to airlines so far 30bn USD

Total flight cancellations 260,000 flights

Cathay Pacific have over 50% of their fleet grounded- HK need this airline to be on top form more than ever now with everything going on over there.

International border crossings closed and people turned away from countries.

Turkey and Pakistan have both closed borders with Iran

People panic buying !!

Nurses in Hebei Provence apparently having their heads forcibly shaved to prevent further infection !!

So many industries and trades affected- Retail, Healthcare, Tech, Tourism and E-Commerce are just a few examples.

We could easily cause major disruption to the global economy if we carry on as we are......this will be a HUGE problem.

So here’s the rough reality:

This thing has killed around 3000 people, out of what is now verging on 80,000 confirmed cases......

That’s a death rate of around 4% - 3000 out of 80,000 since NYE when the first case was reported.

So let’s say hypothetically for arguments sake say that in the first quarter of 2020 the Novel Corona Virus has killed 3000 people.......

Let’s presume, just to be dramatic that the spread continues despite overwhelming international effort....... and that mortality rate goes up by 50% with each quarter, unlikely but we’re being dramatic about this.....

So that’s

Q1- 3000 people

Q2- 4500 people

Q3- 6750 people

Q4- 10,125 people

Let’s be even more dramatic just for bants and 4 X that number- you get 40,500 people...... based on the speed it’s spreading and killing those numbers are waaaaay over what is more than likely the reality.

Sod it, let’s 10 X that number worst case scenario - we’re now at 405,000.

THE COMMON COLD/STANDARD FLU KILLS 646,000 PEOPLE A YEAR GLOBALLY

This is LESS dangerous and LESS of a threat than THE COMMON COLD/STANDARD FLU
(which is basically what it is )!!

Another example of the worlds media creating fear and panic for whatever reason or as a way to distract us from something else.

This post isn’t for scientific accuracy, but to help people understand PERSPECTIVE, in the grand scheme of things. It’s about proportional response to a crisis and how this effects the global economy.

Also guess what happens to cases that don’t die? They literally get over it..... 80,000 confirmed cases doesn’t mean 80,000 people have it NOW....... it’s the amount of people who have caught this new strain of FLU since NYE- that’s literally it.

Most of them have now been discharged

Also mosquitos kill over 1000 people a day..... you don’t see people wearing full body mosquito nets down the street !!

Janecambridge . My comment was meant as a figure of speech. I would use a tissue but meant that I was worried that the very fact of coughing without a mask may be seen as worse than it be normally - I should have been more precise!

Swalker, if are aiming your comment at me, I fully accept your point but we are have made bookings, paid deposits and are not getting younger. However, depending on the way this progresses over the next two weeks we made do as you advise and delay or cancel our trip.

Seriously though, there is no consistent approach to advice about self isolation.
In Pembrokeshire where we live lots of teenagers and accompanying teachers from a large secondary school went on a skiing holiday to northern Italy during half term. On their return they were told they would be expected to attend school/work unless they developed symptoms.
Whereas at a school in Hampshire near where I used to live, they've closed the school and are deep cleaning it because two of the children went to northern Italy for a few days.

Yes The regiment was stationed there long before the 'Troubles' started which was fortunate for us as we had quite a few Irish wife's and a good relationship with the community as a whole. Our first tour was 72 the 2 more quickly followed 73 & 74. I took part in all of them. The regiment was then posted there in 76 for a 2 year stint, so we had our fair share of postings there.
I went to the amalgamation parade in 2015 at Richmond castle and in 2017 it was my honour to be invited back again to the new regiment to see our (9/12 R.L.) Guidons being marched onto and off a parade square for the very last time.

About all I have left after my divorce is my stable belt. Early 60's was amalgamated in NI.

IMV. The "media" circus are about as much use as the Flu/Virus it`self?. "Wall to Wall" Talking heads this a.m. on the T-V. The only one talking "common sense" for once was a Government minister!!. "We are watching and taking and acting on the advice of the Chief Medical Officer, as the situation develops we will update as we get reliable information." Having regard to the fact that this is a "new" infection. What the bloody hell else can they do?. Short of shutting the country down entirely?.
