I think in the case in question he only looked when asked to at the border point.Where a Motorhome or traveller has reported to the authorities that he has an uninvited stowaway, that surely shows the intent to avoid importing the said stowaway.

Nah, the only way to be absolutely sure is to stop and do a thorough search at the beginning of the ship's loading ramp. The boarding stewards and those in line behind will fully understand. If there is even the vaguest of possibilities that someone could have sneaked on board, then you stop at the entrance to the port and do a full check, including the roof and underneath.
I hope you're enjoying the budgetOnly if you are a Reform voter!
At least there were no real surprises in it.I hope you're enjoying the budget
This isn't the right thread for this debate, I just couldn't help replying to your little political digAt least there were no real surprises in it.
I was glad to see the 'only' increased CGT by 4%, as there had been talk of it going up to the same rates as income tax.
Whatever your political persuasion, there is a massive black hole in the economy.
Whomever was Chancellor needed to come up with circa £40 billion.
So what would YOU have done ?
The Lib Dems, the Greens and the SDP had properly costed alternatives all of which were not that far from what Labour have said they would now do (with a few very different views in places)
The Conservatives, the Unionists and Reform just had criticism, not solutions.
You can do a FOI request if you can’t find the numbers.Has anyone produced the figures yet? Stowaways versus rubber boats? Private vehicles versus Trucks?
Bit like speeding really, don’t want the fine, check nobody is stowing away.
People can moan all they like, it’s not difficult to avoid the fine.
Border force can’t win can they? People moan about stowaways, they fine those allowing it to happen big money.
Someone with a motorhome allows it to happen, they get fined big money, people moan they get fined.
They can’t use X Ray machines, it would result in unacceptable levels of radiation exposure for something that size to be x rayed.I am biased against such a hefty fine because, how does the truck Truck Drivers of a tautliner 40ft trailor check his?
They used to get fined £6000 for each person.
Slightly different for MH's
While the Truck Driver is checking one side, they are climbing in the other and while he is unlocking and climbing into his cab, (it would have been stupid to have left it unlocked,) they are climbing into the back.
Checking for immigrants, is a job for Border Force with their X-RAY machines, we pay the French enough to do it!
They need to discourage the "I had no idea there were a dozen of them in the back of my motorhome officer"I am biased against such a hefty fine because, how does the truck Truck Drivers of a tautliner 40ft trailor check his?

Our local hospital (small rural general hospital) asks for NI number when you check in for some out patient appointments. You are advised beforehand that it will be required. I don't know what happens if you don't have it.Even easier, we tax payers already have a number, it's called your National Insurance number , why not use that for everything!
They, already, have their own Government department.
They need to discourage the "I had no idea there were a dozen of them in the back of my motorhome officer"
One fine like this, that makes the papers and being discussed on the motorhome forums is exactly what they want.
As it means the next motorhome owner will do the checking for them, and so stop motorhomes being targeted as a way in.
I know mine, it's on every prescription. Our local hospital (small rural general hospital) asks for NI number when you check in for some out patient appointments. You are advised beforehand that it will be required. I don't know what happens if you don't have it.
My solution is simple. They can’t use X Ray machines, it would result in unacceptable levels of radiation exposure for something that size to be x rayed.
So how would you do it? Clearly you don’t like people stowing away, so what would solve the problem?
So why is it a charity and not funded from the public purse.Just to add, the duty to assist and to have a search and rescue set up, is part of International Maritime Law.
No statutory requirement to set up a search and rescue system apart from for military incidents! Dare I suggest that the RNLI is a damn sight more efficient than any state run organisation would be.So why is it a charity and not funded from the public purse.

Mine isn't, though my NHS number is on a lot of things. I get P60s from my various pension providers, so I should be able to find my NI number if/when I need it, as long as I'm not away from home eg anywhere in East Anglia in our Moho on holiday. If I was carted in by ambulance or taken there in someone's car when I was taken ill, they'd have no chance whatever of finding out my NI number, nor would I or husband. He'd probably remember his cos he learned it off by heart in his youth for some unknown to me reason. We were both Stats cases so both end in either 38B or 34B. Think we have one of each and mine probably starts YP. Haven't needed the thing since 2000.I know mine, it's on every prescription.

I must admit to being slightly sceptical. Never having been on a cross channel ferry. Is it possible to get on board without a passport?
What you will normally get on your P60 is your National insurance number, not your NHS.Mine isn't, though my NHS number is on a lot of things. You really think that they will simply go away?Asylum agreed, in you come and work etc, denied and off you go. Isn’t hard is it?
Well yes, because whoever it was said that their local hospital required everyone to quote their NI number before they would treat them. What you will normally get on your P60 is your National insurance number, not your NHS.
Yes its is , there are back ways and corrupt crew members on low wages who can make a nice bonus ..I must admit to being slightly sceptical. Never having been on a cross channel ferry. Is it possible to get on board without a passport?
That's quite an allegation. Do you have evidence to support that?Yes its is , there are back ways and corrupt crew members on low wages who can make a nice bonus ..

Also fishermen on the south coast Between Rye and IOW and maybe further west ,used to also bring migrants over by meeting up mid channel with French Fisherman but better marine patrols have probably closed that route but a lot of local fishing boats owners and crew paid off their mortgages and bought nice cars or better boats .Well in my professional life I spent years at sea on ships and I have seen many strange things , I also know the Ferries well and the dockers and crew are not well paid ,, I also know a guy who I went to school with . He lives on south coast who has made a lot of money out of people smuggling using minibuses , he tried to get me involved but I blanked him , and he admitted to me bribing seamen on Dover Calais , Newhaven Dieppe and other routes , He had 3 minibuses doing regular runs for several years ... He did not get caught but he is now in jail for other offenses to do with some property fraud .. But he made a lot of money has a nice house in Bournemouth and a big farm in France ,,, I think he gave up on the Ferry routes when the dingy gangs undercut him , and maybe the authorities have closed any loop holes ,, who knows for sure the smugglers are very clever , if its not people its drugs etc ...
They shouldn't be able to roam as all vehicle decks are covered by CCTV.Hmm! I never thought about stowaways potentially being able to roam the vehicle decks once they are locked. I’m going to check my little van immediately before boarding and when I re-enter it to disembark.
