Lithium batteries - what do you make of this ?

Just a thought! Been looking at the relion site linked to above and it states that their LiFopo4 batteries would make an ideal starter battery. Is there anything wrong with using one battery as a starter battery and a leisure battery? I don’t know much about lithium so just asking!
If you look at for example the Relion brand of lithium batteries, at 100Ah they have three types: RB100, RB100HP and RB100LT. HP is High Performance, and is for dual usage starter and leisure. LT has a built-in heater and temperature control, and will use the charging supply to heat itself up if it's too cold for proper charging.

They also have the 'D' variant that is simply a different size for the European market.

So maybe the HP is what you are looking for.

There's the obvious problem that if you drain the battery with your leisure loads, the engine won't start. That's a large part of the reason for having two separate batteries.

Another good watch has just popped up on my YT feed, I think YT's algorithm has finally got with the program. :D

Limited supply of these in the UK but I'd use them in a heartbeat if the price came down a bit.

Maybe bogeit John should watch a few of these before giving out advice

My last one when I bought a load of cylindrical cells was £70 come to think of it.. and that was worth more IIRC. can't remember, oh well, still cheap as chips.. Oh wait I'll have to buy a BMS as well lolol

10% I think, plus VAT so About £100. Also sometimes if it goes through a shipping agent like DHL they charge a fee of £25 or more. Guess how I know?.
Thought i'd read the small print..
Hmm customs paid perhaps??

Very Important! About delivery and transportation Time

Because the battery (especially the high-power battery you purchased) is a special commodity, the terms of transportation are very strict, all logistics companies in China, including China Post, UPS, FedEx, DHL, are unable to directly transport electricity Pool, so we will start to transport your order from Hong Kong. Once the battery arrives in Europe or US, we will declare for import at the European or US customs. When the battery passes through the European or US customs, we will send it to you by UPS or FedEx. so the ups number we provide will not be updated before the battery passes the customs. This is normal. Once UPS's transportation number is updated, you can receive the goods within 3-5 days at most. If we can't find the updated information after delivery, and the transportation time is still within the time we promised, please don't bring up a dispute. Sometimes it will take more time for transshipment and customs. It's beyond our control, but we promise to deliver the goods to you within the time we promised.

Interesting video, the bit I took from that was if you manage to discharge your Lithium to point of BMS cut off and only have solar to recharge you will need to jump start the Lithium with a 12v supply so that the solar can see it and start to work.

They must come by ship from HK so it must take a few weeks I guess.

I didn't get that bit, surely the charger will give the battery the 12v it needs.

I think what they are saying is that the BMS won't allow anything to connect so shows 0 volts to the solar controller so it doesn't know what it is connected to and at what voltage, so it needs to be shown 12v to jump start it.

worst case scenario you bridge the two fat positive contacts on the B2B with a fork :D

In a Motorhome easy enough to rig up a switch from the starter battery to give it a quick jolt.

careful with that idea..
Don't forget you have a low impedance flat lithium and a fully charged starter battery and you are bringing them together.. that's going to be quite a rush of current.. your switch and cabling would be on borrowed time :D

Forgive my naivity regarding LiFeP04 batteries (it's that Manx fear of change thing ?), but I saw the original inventor John B. Goodenough talking about his latest work developing the solid state battery. He picked up on Maria Braga's work using a glass electrolyte in order to eliminates all risk of shorts caused by dendrite growth.

I appreciate the YouTube clip showing what happens if a LiFeP04 battery is punctured. It effectively recreates a short circuit (dendrites are known to cause the same). That amount of smoke in a confined area worries me greatly should a short occur, particularly if it were to happen overnight.

I'm too much of a coward to commit yet. I'll just do the old Manx thing - wait and see. ??? If 'Johnny is good enough they will be Braggaing about it'. ?

Has it been forgotten that lead acid batteries are also dangerous if treated badly. Little things like being full of powerful acid and giving off explosive gases.

A switch to do that is in the cab of most every RV ever made.

Not the switch and cables I was thinking of.:xgrin:

Yes but without explaining the switch activates a chuffing great contactor it might lead the recipient down the wrong road. ?

Life is so dam dangerous! Last year Chausson decreed that secondary leisure batteries under passenger seats are no longer allowed, our dealer said they could fit a second one in a shoe locker next to the hab door??

Chausson don't actually give a good reason, but they warn of warranty invalidation!

Anyone know why they are taking this stance?

Better ban all those flammable petrol vehicles while you are it too :D

All internal combustion engines I'd say! Looks like the electric motorhome is on the way though. hhttps://youtu.be/B7As3818lTg

Greta Thunberg will be so proud.

£200k - a steal - ouch!

John B. Goodenough needs to to get a move on though before Europes roads get cluttered up with unexpected future time bombs ?

After 10 minutes I wanted to hit the bloke with a lump of wood !
