Lenny's on a Short Winter Break

Today didn't start off too well, just started over a mountain pass and the road was blocked due to tree felling. Had to reverse back down a twisty road for ¼ mile. After we had turned around, back down the road was a guy stopping traffic and turning vehicles around. When we had gone by on the way up he was guiding an artic turning just looked like a delivery.

To add insult to injury the way we had to go involved a €12 toll for a tunnel.

And of course the proxy dash cam as usual failed to record the important bits.

Got better had a great drive over several mountain passes, sorry no footage dash cam let me down again.

Back in France by the beach near Saint-Cyprien.

Oh dear Lenny, this sounds like a trip you should have never have started.
But as us residents say, "This is France" never a dull moment. Especially at 12 o'clock when all the shops shut!

Actually it's not been a bad trip apart from the road closure. Yesterday was a lot longer drive than expected, slow progress on the mountain roads but fabulous scenery. Came back the long way party because we didn't fancy going back on the road we took down & also part of that is now closed.
Shame we haven't had more time we had to delay going away for 2/3 weeks due to a family funeral and have to be back in the UK early March.

Sorry I mentioned the Yellow Train Lenny, a must for another time! But if you get here by 5p.m. On Saturday I have good ole Fish-n-Chips booked for you in the next village. No pressure I just had to book you in as it is very popular. But no problem if you can't make it.
Stop the Booing you lot, F&C by an English couple in France with UK Cod but unfortunately French spuds so a bit of a lottery there! V.good price as well.
Drive Safe.
Steve
No uk cod...UK imports most of its cod,, BUSBY,, ;) ;)

A Funsters day yesterday, popped into Gruissan to say hello to Richard & Kate Clarky and then on to see Steve & Judy old age traveller's. Going into Carcassonne with them today.
It was lovely to meet up at last.
Always enjoy a mini meet and putting faces to names. (y)

Enjoy Carcassonne, it’s probably the best time of year to go, before the hoards turn up.

Richard.

A couple of days ago when coming over the mountains at4000' up we came across this little ruined chapel.

" This chapel , the first shelter a few 100 meters from the boarder under the collar of ares offered sanctuary and saved men and woman escaping the violence of the franquistes troupes during winter 1939"

Steve & Judy took us into Carcassonne yesterday.
After all the hypes it gets wasn't quite what we expected, very pretty but didn't have the same impact of a lot of other towns & walled cities we have visited. Perhaps we have just seen too many.

I agree with you about Carcassonne, Lenny. It's very impressive from a distance, but close up and inside we found it a bit Disney and over commercialised.
For us, there are some much nicer towns in France.

It changes a lot in the summer, busy, noisy, and busy with lots of places to eat. We’ve been there a few times ( my Sister used to live close by ), your right, there are nicer places but we found it interesting as a part of a historical Carthar castle tour.

Hi Jim, I put this thread in the Spanish section but we never made it apart from one night. Please can you move it to the France section.
Thanks.

Today's stop Le Somail on the Canal du Midi, very pleasant apart from the proxy weather, don't like wet stuff.

Lovely spot, my SatNav took me in over the bridge but I found the easy way out.
I expect being a seasoned France traveller you had no such problems?

I saw the warnings about the bridge in the reviews, we have a long wheelbase ( 4400mm) sure we would have made it.

I think it is one of those funnels like a periscope where it slides through the bottom of the barge. You can see half of it is already under the water ::bigsmile:

Blimey - you're right. I missed that :oops::p

A few shots of where we

Interesting looking place.
Very interesting if you follow your satnag it tries to take you over that bridge, good job I read the reviews and avoided it.
Very nice but nothing in the village apart from restaurants they were all closed this time of year.

Stopped off for lunch and to service at the Aire at Ouveillan. Nice little Aire next to the wine cooprative only 6 or 7 place, 3 taken up with locals vans stored there 2 of them didn't look like they had moved for years.

Fun getting in very narrow drive and n9asty soft bit by the entrance I had to reverse back and take a run at it with traction plus on to get in. Then it's very narrow the mirrors were in the hedge on both sides and we are a narrow van (2.21m).

Had a look at Chockswahay spot, pleasant but cars parked there and we don't do over nighting on the road.

Went on to the vineyard near Beziers, now that was interesting, poxy satnag. Took us down a single track road to a 2.4m high bridge, it looked higher but me no risk it.
Of course directly we go down the road and start to reverse back there are vans and cars coming at us in both directions. Had to reverse back about 700m stupid French bloke behind starts honking his horn I send the boss out the sort him out. There was a sheer drop to a gully on one side and a big wall on the other.
Poxy dash cam playing up again it's :swear2: the SD card this time, only place for a Nextbase dash cam is the bin but I did manage to take a photo while reversing.
