I'm a newbie
Hi I'm a motorhome newbie so still learning.
Does anyone lend there motorhome to friends/family members ? Is it difficult to add - remove there name from the vechile insurance policy ?

Lent mine my brother once, and only once.
He used my petrol/diesel funnel to fill the water tank. Last recent use was diesel... Took ages to get the taint out.
Putting him on my insurance only cost £20 for a week, he only wanted it for a weekend.

I suppose if you've lashed out fifty grand or more on a moho/van then lending it out might upset the nervous with untrustworthy off spring.

Ours was 'only' twenty odd grand, still a lot of cash to us (no hp or loans), but our two sons are welcome to use it, they are both sensible adults with their own families, and were brought up to respect other people and their property..

Bottom line.. it's a bloody machine.

Lent brother and sister in law my car once, bloody nightmare, ripped the exhaust off on a high curb and left it in a lay-by for me to recover.

Whole families attitude was “well you can afford to fix it and they can’t”

Due to covid we had to halt building work at home so put MH on Mum in laws drive, put a notice in the window, says don’t even ask

Yes no problem, told them both get class 2 HGV and you can take the RV, now with the little PVC they can both drive it, If we can help in any way we do so why not? Its just an expensive lump of plastic and steel and its insured. As long as they come back safe and sound that's all I worry about.

We lent ours to number 1 daughter where she flew out to France while we flew back. We had the van 6 years and paid 18 and sold it for 12.5. SiL managed to hit a french lorry on our nearside, but to me that is easily done and grumpchild number 1 bit a piece out of the arm rest (he was about 2).
For me no great shakes, a bit of annoyance but she had a holiday.

Then we upgraded to what i would call serious money and uprated the van so they couldnt use it !!!! Then came covid and its the only reasonable holiday so I relented and drove it down to Newquay for them to have a holiday and the wife took the train down to go and get it back .................. in perfect nick. The grumpchildren behaved, which was nice to see. Only if there are similar circs will i lend it again

We‘ve done over 20 house exchanges with people we’ve never met and from all over the world. The exchange includes letting them have the use of our car. We’ve never had a problem. BUT, for reasons I can’t explain, I could never bring myself to let family or friends use my motorhome.

Don’t even think about it, no one looks after your van as good as you do, it will come back with a little dint here or there and they’ll be sorry and say it won’t happen again but it will. Save yourself some heart ache and just say no.

Mine comes back clean and undamaged.. how odd.

What 'heart ache' are you talking about?

back when I bought and sold smaller motorhomes and caravans, I would have lent one to family, but I had no emotional connection. My daughter or sister would never ever ask to borrow my daily drive, as too powerful for them it scares them.

Now if I was asked nicely and with the right guarantees, I might, just might put it on a site for them to borrow for a week. But I would be happier buying a caravan to lend them and then sell on. If daughter takes her towing test on her licence, I would even buy her and family a caravan. But I still won't let anyone else drive it. I have to leave the garage when it gets MOTd or fixed as I hate watching even a mechanic I know and trust drive it

When we had a static caravan we used to let family use it but every time there were damages and missing bits and pieces so when we got the MH we told them all that their borrowing days were over. One Cousin hasn’t spoken to us since! We would hire one for our girls and their families if they wanted but ours stays with us.

We have also done many house shops including car , only problem was a dent in the door from one couple cost £250 to fix I took the attitude that 4months car rental for £250 was a good deal . Although if the shoe was on the other foot I would have got theirs repaired . Never include the motorhome my excuse it was over the legal weight that a foreign license holder can drive 3500 .
which swop company do you use KIWI we have always gone with Homes for exchange now Love home swop ?

I might consider family if they had the license, never anyone else.

That said, when they go to our holiday home, all I get is......

How does this work ?
Where is this?
Where is that?
How do I work the washing machine?
Where is the ...........

Despite the fact they’ve been there many times.

Imagine them in y tv joe moho !

I would let family members stay in the motorhome but I wouldn't want them to drive it. I tend to get too emotionally attached to all my belongings.

I use Homelink.org
It is not the most user-friendly website and there have been times when I have pledged to try another one, but somehow I can't be bothered to go through the process of making a new listing.
As we are unable to do any international exchanges this year we have paid a discounted fee and restricted ourselves to NZ & Australia only, even though we can't even go to Australia. I was just negotiating an exchange in Auckland when the city had to go back to a Level 3 lockdown. No-one is allowed to leave Auckland. This will be lowered to Level 2 (like the rest of NZ) on Sunday even though we are still getting 5-9 new cases every day.
I must admit I am not keen to let Aucklanders stay in our house just yet, so we'll use the motorhome and wild camp our way around the South Island.

Have lent ours to our son and his friends in the past and he was going to borrow it a couple of weeks ago but changed his plans. The only time we had a problem with insurance was years ago when he wanted to go abroad but rules have changed since then.

Slight damage to one van (towel rail pulled off wall) and second time the shower tray was covered in mud.

No I would not. Expensive piece of kit. When we bought our MH we let our daughter have our caravan!
