A very well known dealer in the UK is telling me that I cannot now order a new LHD vehicle for UK delivery from them as the CoC's being provided by EU manufacturers are not acceptable to UK authorities.

Can anyone confirm or challenge this, please?

My options are to accept a RHD version or do a personal import for a LHD version with +10% Import Duty plus +20% VAT (on the vehicle and on the Import Duty) to pay on arrival in the UK.
As said there is no import duty on vehicles from the EU, the duty only applies to vehicles from outside the EU.

Geoff,

You use the EU CofC to apply for a GB Conversion IVA, all very painless.

Rob

Now that is starting to make sense.

I am only interested in case we want to move back to UK and re-import or MH.

It has never had a CofC being 2003, but I am hoping that since it had UK-registration for 18 years there should be no problem.

It does not need a Polish 'MOT' anymore as it is registered as 'Vintage'. So it would need a UK MOT.

I'm thinking of importing a Globecar/Possl Summit 640, possibly 2023. I've been through the import process several times over the years and each time it got more complicated/difficult. Some really useful information in this thread, thanks. I've just emailed vehicleimporting@vca.gov.uk and asked them for an update on the situation, which does seem a little fluid. If I get anything useful from them that's different to current understanding then I'll post on here.

Okay, I emailed and here is the response. I've put the details of the questions I asked below the reply.

Good Morning,

Thank you for your email.

If your vehicle is under 10 years old, you will need to gain UK vehicle approval before applying for registration. In order to register the vehicle, changes will need to made to the speedometer, headlights and rear fog light. There are no changes with regards to the importing procedure and a certificate of conformity is still required for the VCA procedure. Regarding whether any import duties are payable you will need to contact the HMRC on 0300 200 3700.

There are two ways you can get UK approval for your vehicle, GB Conversion IVA or an IVA inspection. If you have an original European certificate of conformity for your vehicle, you will be able to apply to us for GB Conversion IVA. However, if you are unable to obtain this document from the manufacturer of your vehicle, you will need to contact the DVSA on 0300 123 9000 to have the vehicle inspected

All forms can be found on the gov.uk website under “Getting a certificate of GB Conversion IVA” - Importing vehicles into the UK: Getting vehicle approval - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk). Please download the form when you intend to apply and not before. This will ensure you have the most recent version of the application form and your application will not be delayed due to the use of an outdated form.

Kind Regards,

Good evening

I am considering buying a new LHD motorhome form Germany in 2023. I imported our current motorhome in 2018 from Germany, so know what the procedure was then. Clearly since then, a lot has changed with regard to brexit.

Would you be able to provide me with information regarding the current import process? I’m thinking of:

  • The situation with VAT? I’m assuming I’d be able to not pay VAT in Germany and then pay it on import?
  • Are there any further import duties?
  • The import process with regard to vehicle registration. I’ve heard that a European Certificate of Conformity will cease to be recognised in the future? Will this mean going through the IVA process?

Any information you can provide me would be gratefully received.

Kind regards

Nothing has really changed since we imported our first van in 2015, then again in 2019 and now 2022 apart from the GB conversion IVA and HMRC submitting the NOVA which is all very easy.
VAT registered importing is very slightly different.

We got held up with this van by the DVLA (all working from home) but a quick email to Grant Shapps and it was sorted the following week.

We simply notified the HMRC with an emailed form and they calculated the VAT and then they inform NOVA.
We then paid the VAT and received a certificate for this.
Then sort the CoC with the VCA as mentioned above.

Then cross your fingers that the forms don’t get sent to the DVLA apprentice.

Lots of opinions of how hard it is and what you should and shouldn’t do but it couldn’t be any easier.

I think as long as the CoC remains acceptable then that will cut down on the need to go through IVA inspection, making for a smooth process. The reply I had from VCA didn't mention the CoC becoming unacceptable in the future, but who knows. I've always found DVLA to be the sometimes worrying part. It used to be really easy when you could go to the local DVLA office, but those days are gone. Having imported a number of cars/motorhomes over the years (perk of working for BFG!) I have found much more bureaucracy has been introduced and a lot vagueness, surrounding the whole process. I'm glad your import went well.
