Learn to crochet?

I’ve had a little go at crochet, first thing this morning. Problems with tensioning  but I will persist. Just popped out and bought some decent hooks to keep my hands in place as I seem to end up at the hook!
Lisa I had awful problems with tension when I started and I found the hooks that have a rubber type grip far better I still can’t use the metal ones:eek:

When I went back downstairs to my table there were two ladies on the next table discussing the latest handbag that one of them had crocheted and added crocheted roses!!!!

How amazing was that. :)
That is what I do, I've done loads of them, some of them are lined with the tops of old jeans so that the pockets are inside the bag. I decorate them with felting as well......I do get a bit carried away and no two are ever the same.....(y)

Well, I've been sitting here for about an hour and a half and I've unpicked everything that I've tried......I feel like the tensioning is getting better but I keep getting the wool split and catching etc....It's driving me nuts. I don't think crochet suits me lol. I'm going to have a break and go back to knitting.

I lost count of how many times I started then restarted but found it easier to keep the tensioning slightly looser till I got the hang af it:)

And I've been to charity shop and got some more red wool ... and also bought some red and purple for the poppies and got some buttons now to finish off the ones I've done. I havn't got enough me to go round.

Thank you @Hollyberry ;)

Oh I bought 3 shades of wool to start on @Janine's flower blanket/scarf .. think may need another colour and I only bought cheap wool so bit worried.

So excited. I am learning to crochet with my toes so we can reach our target.

@SueTayBon well done ... :) .. you just add .. I mean minus them whenever you ready.

Little grandaughter poorly so may need break from crocheting for little bit but think I so hooked now that I will do an hour in the middle of the night.

@enery8 Sue. How are you getting on love?

I wanted to check out the magic circle video but couldn't hear it until today when I had time to concentrate more and also to use my headphones, turned out that she was only referring us on to tutorials of vids, lol. So checked one of those out and tackled it today, at last. Mind you after so many years of not doing any I was all fingers and thumbs, to begin with and kept messing up. When I let my mind wonder off and was doing it on autopilot I was just fine. Finally achieved my first magic circle in black, used a bigger hook to achieve a slightly bigger poppy, so maybe today I will get chance to pick it up and carry on.
You Joy seem to be having lots of problems this week, I hope your granddaughter is better. Also hope you resolve your loss of gas quickly, obviously a very difficult situation. from sue at hurwitzend

@movan - Joy, make that another one deducted from total.
I knitted the centre piece, so I’ll complete the other two now that I know how to do it.

Thanks for your kind offer Joy, but I don’t think that I will need them now as I can knit the centres quite easily. I thought they would take too long but they take me minutes :)

A few photo's of a 5 sided throw that I have been making, it's meant to be all wavey, so anything but flat..(y)

That looks lovely and very intricate....I can’t ever see me getting to that stage. How long do you think you’ve spent on it? (Out of curiosity)

Thank you, but it really isn't intricate at all, it is all just single, double or trebles.
The following photo shows a row that can be done with doubles (or trebles) for however many you like then some singles, then doubles, singles and so it goes on, just keep the amount of each the same each time if you want it to be consistent ....all your aiming for is creating an effect that pleases you.

Experiment and make things up as you go along, if you like it, repeat it.
I really don't how long it has taken so far, because I put it down for a while, this thread has made me pick it up again...:D

The thing is we ALL start in the same place and we end up doing what we feel comfortable with......so enjoy discovering and experimenting. :hugs:

Looks lovely and love those blingy nails!!
Thanks....yes they are a bit sudden aren't they........I wouldn't have long sparkly nails at all if I had to pay for them to be done, I do them myself and that includes building them before I bling them....

Hazel that’s beautiful and so are your nails...how do you keep them like that when you have horses?

I will do photos when it is more finished than it is at the moment. It won't win any prizes as the piecing isn't very good but once I have done the quilting I'll applique hearts over where the piecing is way out which will make it more acceptable (at least to me - I don't think many other people will notice or care).

When she was very ill but before my Grandma died she asked my sister and I to think of something we wanted but didn't need and (within reason) she would buy it for us so that she could see our pleasure. My sister asked for the deposit for a sports car and I asked for a Bernina 440QE sewing machine. I love my Bernina and sew most days, it makes me smile just to think of Grandma.

The machine has a counter that tells the servicing engineer how many stitches it has done (since last serviced and overall) and mine has done nearly two million stitches in 9 years). I change the needle regularly and clean and oil every two or three bobbins which is far more than the minimum but I think that makes a huge difference. The new foot is a Bernina Ruler Foot, I have the Westalee Ruler Foot but it is a fiddle to set up differently for each quilt as you need to undo a screw (with screwdriver) reset the height of the foot and hold it all in place as you do the screw up again, the Bernina foot has a thumb screw for that so can be adjusted one handed.

No thank you !! :)

Thank you sweetheart.....sadly I only have one little Shetland now as I caved in and sold Gaius to a friend of our daughter who had fallen in love with him, Kaja sadly had to be PTS 18 months ago. I see Gaius when we go down south and Chester is living at a fab friends place with her horses, he has become best buddies with a mini Shetland called Humbug.
Saying all that or rambling on as it's commonly called I did start doing my nails like that when I was still shovelling muck and I just redid them a little bit sooner......they can last for 3-4 weeks now depending on the growth.

Google Loom Band Crochet Hook and there are lots of tutorials for adding non-slip grips to your metal hooks. If you don't have a small child who has given up on the loom band craze, charity shops seem to have a lot of them!

Thanks for sharing your photos My stepdaughter had to have her Shetland PTS last autumn she still has a horse and a pony but she is looking for another Shetland to show.

Chester is going to be shown this summer by another friend, it will be nice to see him out.
I've probably shown at some of the shows your stepdaughter will show at in the dim & distant past.....I used to live in Carmarthenshire.

Beautiful neddies. I also have horses but they are so muddy at the moment, I wouldn't dare show you them lol. As for nails....Well, mine are typical "horsey hands". Short nails and calluses......perhaps thats why the wool keeps catching :D2
