Learn to crochet?

I love crochet work and also Tunisian crochet. I knit as well and usually have a pair of socks on the go tucked away in one of the lockers. Looking forward to catching up with this thread ,- lovely idea.

I think folk should be warned crocheting can be dangerous to your health if you're not used to it. :D2 About this time last year I decided to knit myself a woolly hat, followed by a crocheted blanket - made up of squares. All the unfamiliar repetitive movements made me develop thumb tendonitis, posh name De Quervains Syndrome. Whatever you call it, you don't want to get it. At times the pain felt like I'd been electrocuted. For months I tried everything to make it better - rest, exercises, icing, ultrasound, massage, nutritional supplements. In the end I had to have a steroid injection from the doctor. That eased the inflammation and touch wood, it's OK now but I'll never take up knitting or crocheting again. My advice to anyone starting out is only do a bit at a time.

that's great news about you're little one. only just seen the thread as I've been away. . hope he enjoys his new career.

View attachment 217353 I've got a secret yearning to make something like this, maybe a bit ambitious
No, once you start to learn the stitches if you practice, you can make this. I made one in the early 1980s, it was quite heavy and used left over wool, or reused wool from the jumpers my kids grew out of. The magic is using nice colours and the overall effect can me amazing. Sue

Well aren't you all doing brilliantly! Just caught up with this thread and I'm really sorry I wasn't able to join in. The poppies are all lovely.

We have that same project for St John's Church in Keynsham and they have a knitting pattern as well as a crochet one. I might give that a go instead - it may be easier on my wrist.

In the meantime Keeeeeeeeeeeeeep Hooking girls!

I forgot this photo, sorry. It makes me determined to stick at it when I see stuff like this.

keep practising Joy, and sooner or later you will see the improvements. Keep an early piece, because when you look at it in a few weeks you will see how far you have come.

At last ... I got a hook. The smallest I could find and it's 7 mm but it'll do for a practice. I'm in the UK over Easter and my mum has a box full of goodies and I'll get some more then.

I've made a (purple) chain and am on the way back. I'll post a piccie but I'm afraid I'm a long way behind!

Thanks for replying Buttons.. we are just desperate to reach my target for puddleduck and Janine .... 50,000 poppies. ;)

Enjoy your holiday son. X
well I think I need to join in, that is a lot of poppies. I am not sure what pattern you are using, so if someone could let me know. I used to do a lot of crocheting, but not since I took up bobbin lace and tatting.

@Janine @davanne I too went straight to Amazon e-bay etc. to find these crochet hook sets. No joy. The best they could offer was hooks that light up  what's that all about? Would drive Derek mad.

great for dark thread or in difficult light. I have seversl of them,

Back to the poppies once I have more red and black yarn.

In the meantime here is a crochet square I just completed (it will need blocking to square it up and the ends sewing in and trimming) - it's the first part of the "Elements" throw that I gave the link to before. I've made it in some Aran weight yarn I had left over, navy blue and cream. It is MUCH simpler to do than it looks at first and the video is very clear - I had the sound turned off and the subtitles switched on which was very amusing :) I think I will make these for a throw as a change from poppies when I get bored :) I'm not sure if I am going to do part two of the pattern or just keep doing part one squares.

I need a smaller hook. My attempts at anything other than the chain are too loopey but at least I'm getting the hang of handling the hook and the wool!
Just keep practising Judith until you get a smaller hook ...have you watched the Bella Coco videos ?

I've watched part of the video on the link that @Hollyberry posted, I think that is a Bella Coco one.
