Last minute change of plan.... So what are French Aires like during October?

4 more sleeps and we're off! Got the latest copy of "All the Aires" and heading for Puy du Fou in Les Eperes as recommended by meanders. Booked a campsite midweek at Nantes so we can freshen up with showers, but other than that we are winging it. So excited and nervous as this is our first foreign trip 😊
Wish us luck!

Good luck you'll be fine..make sure you ahve park4night or searchforsites apps..

Get water at every opportunity. Let us know how you get on.
Looks like the weather's gonna be quite mild

In the Dordogne at the moment it's fairly quiet. On a nice free aire.

Apps app downloaded, I found P4N good for cross referencing Aires that are in the book to give you upto date information, topping up on fuel along with water is high on my priority given the news at the moment in France 😱

We often do the same. Find an aire in the book then check the reviews on p4n.

We're at La Mailleraye sur Seine at the moment and there's lots of space. The water is still on and the bar in town is open (y).
Sorry nextstop to hijack the thread.
Whats to town like Scousebir, we planning a trip for next year and I’m determined to get the sister in law to use aires, I’ve just been looking at that aire as a possible for the way back up

It's a small town but there's a bar, restaurant, a couple of boulangeries and a small supermarket but the attraction is sitting on the side of the Seine watching the ships pass by

You can also walk alongside the river in both directions. It's just a lovely spot to spend a couple of days.

Hi 1967bowesj , lovely Riverside site , La Mailleraye sur Seine , not a great town more a village , good boulangerie ,small Supermarket , good vet , small campsite, ideal aire to avoid Rouen.
Before COVID we always stopped here on way out and on return for the vets

We leave 23rd and arrive in dieppe. I’ve looked at this aire and it’s really appealing 😃 can’t wait to stay, most prob be second nights stop as we drive anywhere but end in Caen for ferry home. Lots of places we like the look of on the way 😃

Thanks FIDGET and scousebird
I liked the idea of watching the world drift by and it will be at the end of a stay so winding down and we looking just to miss Rouen on way back

currently sitting in an aire on the Atlantic coast - absolute rip off

9€ a night free electric, water, waste, toilet dump

30C on the beach today warm water and blue skies

Can’t wait to get back to a UK site - said no one ever

It may have been mentioned already but at this time of year avoid aires with grass if it has recently rained or rain is forecast. You can check images of the aire in the apps and see what the surface is like.

Have a good trip, I'm sure you will. Our normal routine is only to drive in the morning and find the aire in time for lunch then explore on foot around the aire in the afternoon. :)

Noticed a lot of campsites look to have grass pitches in most pictures I’ve seen. I had been thinking this

It's not just the risk of getting stuck but if it's muddy it's a pain getting back into the MH. A little plastic door mat is useful. Dogs of course are mud-magnets so plenty of towels needed, micro-fibre are easiest to dry afterwards. :)

We are hoping to cross to France next week. We use the Aires but this time of year will mostly be using the CAMPING CAR PARK Aires usually around 10 to 12 euros a night but includes electric and WiFi. Not sure how good the WiFi is as I just use my own but it’s handy to have the electric for heating. You can join and get your card to enter just before the barrier for most parks, then you just load how much you need on the card.

We are in France at the moment and we have used quite a few camping car parks plus a number of freebies , enjoy your time away .

Like DBK we tend to travel in the morning and stop around lunchtime , this gives us time to enjoy where we are. But also if we don’t like the look of where we have got to we still have lots of time to have a plan b.

We use the Aires going down and back but usually go on Acsi sites when we reach the area we are visiting. The one we use on way down is at Gace in Normandy as we usually pull in there enroute Spain in winter. In fact it was quieter mid August than than winter, only on Italian van on besides us and wife most put out as we got almost chucked out of the supermarket at 7.15 pm on a summers night! The other disappointment was the Riverside Aires at Sable le Sarthe, great during the day full of vans almost so we thought we would pass the weekend there enroute the Dordogne. 11pm that night a group of people of colour
(quite a lot in the area)decided that they would have a allnight drinking and drugs party on the Riverside next to where we and 8 other vans where parked till 4 am.We managed to move right over to other side of Aires but what surprised us was that not one French van came out to complain and no sign of police, so one to avoid. Lovely municipal site 3km away saved our plans to stay in the area that weekend. But mostly good to use Aires, in 15 years only had a couple of bad experiences.

We are in France currently. Mainly France Passion sites. First time we have used them. They are great. Mostly vineyards so far. at a fishing site now. You catch your trout. Fishing is free but you pay for any trout taken. They were delicious.

Where is this fishing place?

It’s not really proper fishing. They have stocked a stream and lake with brown and rainbow trout. You borrow a pole with float and bait. The browns are hard to catch the rainbows are kamikaze. Taste nice and I did enjoy it.

Any updates on the fuel situation?
I've been topping up where possible, was limited to 30 litres in Beaune, seems ok on autoroute but a bit dearer.

Thanks for the tips, planing on hot footing it down as far as we can on the first day as the ferry arrives at 8am, then slowly meander back up, driving in the morning to get the the next destination to explore sounds like a good plan.
I've got one more work day left then luckily the kids are still at school until we leave so I can pack in peace 😊

In the Alsace at the moment 20 degrees during the day Aires vary in price but average about 14 euro no issues getting on any. All good until I need to go home later next week.🤮

Just left Avignon and stopped on A9 motorway near Nimes...Max 30 litres..
