Keswick.... possibly the most unwelcoming town in the UK?

We’re staying in a CMC site near Keswick and I’ve been dispatched to collect our traditional Friday night Indian takeaway. I normally have a half in my local whilst awaiting collection when at home. I can’t get in a single pub, won’t even let me use the loo because of COVID f###ing Bollocks! Last week we were in Beaumaris, similar size town, similar number if people (tourists) in it, and no hassle about going into a pub or a shop, no face mask required, just social distancing. I’m seething! Edit, finally got into the George Hotel, the pub is empty but there’s a member of the Stasi at the door turning people away, he’s just told a resident, a resident! that because he’s 10 minutes late he’s missed his table booking for dinner and will have to come back at 9pm!!! I’m voting with my feet next weekend, we’ll be spending our hard earned in Wales. I’m sick of living in a police state where everyone has their own take on “the law”. RIDICULOUS!!!!!!

Hopefully you won't come to Wales to spend your money, if you can't get used the new NORMAL then you could always stay at home. The rest of us are trying not to become a statistic!

I've just came back from 10 lovely days walking near Keswick, didn't feel the need to eat out once, or go into any other shops apart from the Co-op.
Nice to see that we all do this motorhome thing differently. We got back on Wednesday evening after a month away touring France and Germany. We ate in the motorhome twice. We enjoy eating out and visiting cafes and bars in the areas we visit. We’re going to Scotland on Wednesday and are taking food supplies for when on Harris and Lewis as I’m not sure what restaurants are available. We’ll be eating out whenever possible though.

Under normal circumstances we would eat out a few times and enjoy looking in the shops, not this year.

Oohhh you missed out the lovely food at booths

I sort of get where you’re coming from. Some places adopt almost an apologetic tone as in “We’re required to ask you to sanitize and provide contact details by law but please don’t let this spoil your evening. You’re very welcome here.” Other places I’ve been to almost revel in it. “Stand there in the queue. Not there, THERE!!” Can I use the loo while I’m waiting?? “Sorry no, due to COVID-19, you see” (Hence your Stazi comment lol). Permission to breathe please. “Sorry, you can’t - due to COVID-19”. We’re actually in France atm (Saumur) and everyone in town centre is wearing masks. Police patrolling in twos and threes again all masked up and politely reminding people to wear masks if your not wearing one. Sort of sets the tone.

Whatever you do, never go to Pooley Bridge.

Terrible place.

They are even taking down the only bridge across the river for pedestrians this coming week.

:whistle2:

Am I right in thinking England has put Wales on the ‘watch’ list-Covid!?

Mike that’s exactly it! We went to Keswick to have a good time on holiday and maybe spend some money in the shops and have a couple of meals and a few drinks. The kind of activity most people have on holiday. I don’t want to be ordered around and be told to stand on a sticker on the pavement and not move from it until told to do so. I’m 56 for God’s sake , not a 3 year old toddler!!

Cheers

Russ

It sounds a bit like the story I heard here. One of the small shops requested people to come in singly wearing masks. Had a family of 4 come in no-one wearing a mask. When asked to wear them the mother of the family said they were in Whitby to get away from all that!!!!!
What planet are some people on.
Now theres about 9 places shut after cases/contact tracing.
Some people need to be treated like 3 year olds as they clearly can't understand whats going on in the world. Appealing to common sense just hasn't worked at any stage.

Jus seen it's now 10 businesses https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/news/local-news/ten-businesses-whitby-shut-doors-18885578
And people complain about marks on the pavement to stand on and contact lists!!!

At the pub or restaurant, if you get passed the minor inconvenience of queuing (if you’ve arrived when it’s not quiet) & the Q&A for the tracing, at your table you’ll have almost the exact same social event as the pre-covid-19 ones.

I’ve a friend who won’t adjust to the - hopefully - temporary regime. He got us kicked out of a pub when the bar staff asked him to use the hand sanitiser before entering. ☹️
Just play the COVID-19 game when you have too.
Or stay at home.

Agree we have not felt hard done to. The measures are there for the staff and customers protection it's hassle for the staff as it is without some grumpy ones whingeing about it.

How much is it gonna cost to change all the signs to "Pooley"?

Already done!! :roflmto: :roflmto:

I’ve always found Cumbrians a very welcoming, down to earth and hardy bunch of people to be honest. Surprised to hear that story.

Wales is a far more welcoming place than the ripoff Lake district, people are friendlier and prices not such a rip off.

We live about 25 miles from Keswick - but wouldn't dream of going there at present. People who live in the town are reporting it's been teeming with people (as opposed to rain, inevitable round here!) and that many visitors have no idea of social distancing. It may be quietening down a bit now schools are back, but I wouldn't bank on it.
I wish more places would enforce the SD rules tightly - we can all see all too clearly the consequences of people who think they shouldn't have to respect rules on distancing, masks, giving contact details etc. And it seems crazy that a "one size fits all" approach could mean that pubs that do respect the rules may potentially end up having to close again, along with the ones that treat it all as a joke.

Seems like the OP thinks that the Covid-19 regulations don't apply to him. Whether you are on holiday or not, this is the new normal and you had better get used to it. If people like you continue to want to ignore it, then infections rates will rise and lockdowns occur. Is that what you want?

Just come back from the Lakes & spent time in Keswick. I found the locals to be very friendly in most cases. The shops were a bit busy & there were a few tourists causing trouble, i.e refusing to wear facemasks in shops, a couple having an arguement with restaurant staff as they just walked up to a table & sat down, despite a BIG sign saying 'wait to be seated', that kind of thing. I did go into one coffee shop & had to give contact details as I wanted to sit in but I'm fine with that. the number of people who must pass through that place in a day means at least the Track & Trace can contact me if necessary.

I don't know the OP and I'll be honest, I've not read all the posts on this thread, but in many of the towns in the area, Penrith, Keswick, Windermere and Bowness, all the locals were very accommodating in difficult circumstances. I ate out quite a few times while I was there and only once was I refused entry to a restaurant as I hadn't booked in advance. To be fair, they were busy & I could have waited outside in the hope someone finished their meal if I really wwanted to. The only issues I saw between locals & tourists (and sometimes between tourists and tourists) were where tourists weren't following the rules re social distancing/wearing face masks.

I've also seen similar behaviour in my local town which is not exactly a tourist hotspot.

Actually Covid 19 is not Bo...cks as you describe, there are a great many families who have lost loved ones to it and an even greater number who very nearly have with infected people still suffering after effects. It is not a police state, people are doing the best they can to protect themselves and others, naturally they don't always get it right but they are trying and that matters much more than your irritation over what is a trifling inconvenience. Wales, if you are interested, has a much higher infection rate than the Lake District, particularly around the dark red areas on the map so you might need to be selective as to where you go.

Where did you stay in Ayr, never camped in Ayr, was too close to home.
John goes to Beverley on a wednesday night with a few friends, they have to book a table, but don't need to have a meal, just to get a few pints, most of the hostelries there are the same.
we stayed at the caravan club site Cragie gardens. very good position for town just a short walk along the river. also nice beach for the dog.

We are at Keswick now and no problem with entering any pub/cafe/shop so far

We’re actually having lunch at the George tomorrow and have done in the past so looking forward to it

Only problem is no one is sticking to social distancing out in the streets but we’ve found that everywhere we been recently. York, Bridlington, social distancing does not exist

So UK new cases have gone up from 853 new cases to just under 3000 in the last two weeks and you don’t seem bothered about having to adapt. Wake up man!
